The average save % over the last 10 seasons:

2007-08: .909
2008-09: .908
2009-10: .911
2010-11: .913
2011-12: .914
2012-13: .912
2013-14: .914
2014-15: .915
2015-16: .915

I'd also say it's those super rookies making mistakes and causing goals against. Does anybody know if more rookies made starting lineups this season?

Goalie equipment changes implemented before 2016-2017 season. 80s goalies all over again.

Everything is cyclical. Might be just a small sample size, but eventually scoring had to gain ground on D/goalies. I hope that will prove to be the case as the season progresses.

small sample size yes but the goalie equipment and the style moving back to speed and skill both have something to do with it IMO

Scoring is always really high to start a season. Goalies and defensive systems take a while to settle in each year. This same thread happened last year too and every other year.

Equipment didn't change this year.

This is attributed to great talents arriving in the NHL (McDavid, Matthews, Eichel, Laine). The late 00's and early 10's were not good years for prospects. Basically anything after 2005 (Crosby).

You guys underestimate their impact on league scoring so much. Even if a guy like McDavid scores just 0.5 PPG more than your average 1st overall pick, it means the other team will open up in order to get that goal back and the elastic effect is created with more goals for other players as well.

That's the thing though. It hasn't been this high at this point since the 92/93 season. Last year actually started it lower and then went up. This doesn't always happen, it's actually a very rare occurrence.

Don't forget about some of the terrible 90's drafts as well.
The talent just in the top 3 of drafts is crazy good even just since 2013.. MacKinnon, Barkov, Drouin, Ekblad, Reinhart, Draisaitl, McDavid, Eichel, Strome, Matthews, Laine, Dubois. It's crazy.

Are you sure about that? I really feel like I remember this exact same conversation last season.

No the pace actually started well below 5 goals per game. And rose up over 5 by midway point in the season and ended somewhere around 5.3 goals per game I think. 2014 was even worse.

We are just barely over 6 goals per game. The 1995 season started off good then dropped then rose back up real quickly. It's actually very comparable to that year.

This season started off really high, got up to almost 7 goals per game for a bit then dropped down to 6. Some teams are still keeping scores down. If anyone started a thread last year that scoring was up by this time they must have been referring to up over 2014 because it sure as heck wasn't anywhere near 6 goals per game.
