While I agree, we also need to be consistent. If Willie's imposed a merit based system, then refusing to play the fourth much despite Prust, and especially Cracknell, playing exceptionally well by their respective standards, it unravels the whole message. We're only on game six. The kids have plenty of time to push for more ice time, which they will get if they continue to play like they have. This is the first game Baertschi looked to have some jump. So that's a positive sign Willie should reward.
Agreed that Prust and Cracknell had good game, but would you say that they had a good enough game to be out there in the last minute instead of the Sedin or Sutter line?
To follow up, Baertschi and Virtanen both had respectable games but were sitting on the bench most the game. By the time they get out on the ice again, they've already lost their rhythm/adrenaline/what-have-you.
What's also quite confusing is this double standard regarding giveaways. When Prust/Dorsett give the puck away, they're given much leeway. But when it's any of the players under the age of 24, their ass is stapled to the bench. I get the idea of a track record, but these actions in themselves causes the system of earning the ice to collapse on itself.
I'd like to reiterate that Prust and Cracknell were good, but not close enough for me to think the youngsters deserved to be benched as much as they were.
