Same old Canucks.

Have no chance of making the playoffs but go balls to the wall to eke out every point they can and end up screwing their draft possibilities. (although they likely draft the wrong guy even if they improved their draft position anyways)

Play a needed trade option in Schenn even though he can't sit down.

As in the past, the coach (often fighting for his job) is allowed to forget about anything but the next game and totally disregard any consideration of the club's future . Fact is any wins now have zero value and only hurt the future,

In the end, most fans (or at least any with half a brain), spent the last minutes of these games chewing off their finger nails hoping the team doesn't somehow tie or win. Luckily they somehow didn't tie this one up.

There were some good efforts including:

Hughes - very strong offensive effort. Lot of elite level plays in this game. Now over a point a game.

Bear - very strong over the last part of the game.

Garland - back to being his buzz saw best. Teams not picking up him up for the playoffs (given the price is right) are making a mistake. Playing better under Tocchet. Very good in one on one board battles.

Podkolzin - again showed good wheels. Got in quickly on the forecheck and came back well. High energy and effective game. Nice he finally scored.

Poor

OEL - needs to play with more intensity when other team have good scoring chances. Just that bit behind that allows players to get open for a shot or tip. Needs to take players out of the play and keep them out of the play.

Myers - jumping from man to man and ending up not covering anyone. Needs to do his job an let others do theirs. Just creates a havoc when he is switching off so much. Should be taking his man and eliminate him from the play and then then keep him out of the play. Too often the player he was originally checking ends up scoring the goal

Martin - slip, sliding all over the place and not angling properly on outside shots. Fought the puck, again, all game.

Others

Miller - better puck movement and went to the body well. Good on PK and in the circle. Still some defensive issues however.

Stillman - in spite of the act he was on for some goals against, Stillman is playing better. Much more up in the play and taking players harder around the net (even if not always successfully). Better puck movement through the neutral zone and at both blue lines. Maybe not as bad as he first appeared. Believe he got concussed in a fight (with Jeannot) just after coming here and that might explain why he was so awful.

Beauvillier - got speed and close to putting away chances in this game. Tends, however, to overpass. Success with Pettersson is iffy at this point. Probably better than Boeser.

A body of work to marvel at. 3 wins last year made him a million bucks. Go figure.

Chytil was seen universally as a cap dump. Some people were high on Lundvist but people were also skeptical because he was doing not so good in the AHL and he is seen as another smallish rather one dimensional dman that gets point from the PP.

probably not a good idea to shell shock Silovs while he is developing.

Just think of Martin as a tank specialist
Agreed, let Silovs age like a fine trappist ale. Move heaven and earth to acquire Bedard. Try to shed some expensive garbage. There IS hope...

I know it's mostly a nothing stat, but does anybody else notice that Quinn Hughes leads the Canucks in +/- and only his usual partner Luke Schenn is anywhere close to him in that regard? He's an entire +30 over OEL.

He’s under appreciated. He’s a top 10Dmen In the league and people can only see his fault because they’re comparing him to Fox and Makar Top 3Dmem in the game.

Goaltending coach Ian Clark has a reputation for making chicken salad out of chicken feathers, when it comes to goaltenders. But even he's no miracle worker.

Martin and Delia are AHL goaltenders, pure and simple. They'll play well once and awhile, but forced to play a string of games as a starter, they're just not up to it. No shame there, although the Canucks are probably regretting offering Martin a two-year deal. But it is at the league minimum, so sending him to Abbotsford isn't a big deal.

But the goalies next year will Demko, and just anybody else they can find on the waiver wire.

This has to be one of the worst goaltending runs in modern history

That assist tonight from Hughes is the game breaking talent he brings

He's not even skating hard, and is just pure patience and awareness

gets the puck in his own zone and goes 1 on 4
dices through the neutral zone
and pushes the defense right back into their own zone with a zone entry

then hands it off

It's been said so many times but it is mind-boggling how the Nucks got rid of Tanev. He was an excellent fit for Hughes.

Spencer Martin is probably perfectly fine as an NHL backup.

The problem is that with how Demko played and then his injury, the guy who had 6 NHL starts under his belt was then thrust into taking on the starting workload for a team with one of the worst defense in the entire league.

It was a no win situation for him. Martin was literally put into a position to fail and he did.

The sad thing about watching Petey and Hughes every night is that they're players on an island out there, and that's their destiny as Canucks.

Because of all the awful drafts; lackluster UFA signings and bad trades, the Canucks have really lost the opportunity to build around these two spectacular young talents. They can't draft enough players to backfill all the holes, at least in the time-frame that Pettersson and Hughes are Canucks.

As the seasons grind on, it's inevitable that these two guys will become increasingly frustrated. I only hope that when the day comes that they do move on,, it is to a franchise that's been built the right away and gives them a chance at a Cup. They'll have earned it.

Yep. I don't even really fault Martin or have any ill will towards him at all. It just is what it is.

I think Hughes is playing pretty equal to both Fox and Makar this year.
