I can't read as I was going to ask if he was coming back to Laval

Starts next season so yeah still WHL.

Habs EOTP:
Montreal Canadiens sign Gianni Fairbrother to entry-level contract

As the contract will start next season, it will have no effect on the contract space the team currently has available this year. He will be eligible to return to the Laval Rocket if his junior season ends before the AHL season does.
The agreement, which has an AAV of $848,333.33, will see Fairbrother earn $750,000 at the NHL level in both 2021-22 and 2022-23 and $775,000 in 2023-24. The deal also contains signing bonus payments of $92,500 in both 2021-22 and 2022-23 and $85,000 in 2023-24. Fairbrother is set to make $70,000 per season at the AHL level.

What's the read on this guy? Seems like a middling prospect to me?

Only time will tell. But he is a solid player who plays a smart game. We won't get carried away because he only played 3 games in the AHL, but he looked good in all 3 games. So there is something to looks forward to. He may end up being a career AHL'er. But I see NHL in this kid.

He was good in the games he played in the AHL this year. He definitely could have hold on to a top7 spot in the AHL this year.

I'd say his potential is somewhere between #4-6 D.

Any idea how is his game is similar to, and different from, Cale Fleury's?

I've had limited viewings of Fairbrother. I've seen some WHL games of his and of course his 3 games with Laval. I think Fleury is more physically mature and plays a more physical style but he is still mobile and can move the puck. However, I think Fairbrother plays a smarter game. I believe that Fairbrother's decision making is better.

In today's game I think smarts is more important than physicality.

He has the size. But speed and mobility are also important.

Yea, Fairbrother isn't small. He's got size, too. And he can be physical. He just doesn't exactly lay the boom the way Fleury does and the way Guhle showed us.
