German Prospects for the NHL Draft

It actually was Leo Hafenrichter (Seider never played DEL2) only last season. He played 3 games for Bad Nauheim (also played 2 games in the DEL for Cologne).
Before that, it was Garret Pruden also for Bad Nauheim (7 games in the 2014-15 season)
Also Maximilian Daubner and Jakob Mayenschein played 4 and 5 games respectively for Landshut in 2013-14

There were also a couple of goalies who got a game at some point I think.

So, it happens occasionally but not a lot.

Since we are already a couple of months into the season. What you guys are thinking, who is having a realistic chance next summer?
Lutz should be a safe bet. At least a mid round pick, if he will miss even more. But other than that, it's hard to tell. Kechter seems to having a bit of a tough time. Elias, same like his brother, will probably not getting picked cause of his height. How are the odds for guys like Hafenrichter, Bettahar, Klein etc.? Not to mention Hauf and Wolf. Does guys like Proske, Heigl or Samanski having a chance as an overager? Or maybe even Pilu?

Too many questions haha. But at least its safe so say, we have more players in the mix since a couple of years. Thats a good sign in my opinion. Also german players getting more in the focus of scouts should be a good thing.

So far I think the only players (including overagers) that have really improved their draft stock, to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if they were selected, are Bettahar and Proske.
Thomas Heigl certainly seized the opportunity he was given due to COVID, but I am not sure that is enough.
I still think that Hafenrichter is a better prospect than Bettahar, but while the latter finds himself in a situation where he plays constantly and even gets plenty of opportunities on the power play, Hafenrichter too often ends up as a healthy scratch.

I really like Samanski, but if I was in charge of an NHL franchise at the draft I would wait and see, invite him to training camp and maybe sign him as a free agent if he continues to develop nicely.

Pilu was a surprise this season so far, but I am not sure he can cut it in the NHL in that same role he is playing in the DEL. I would keep an eye on him, but like with Samanski I would not draft him, unless I'd have some 7th round pick and really no idea what to do with it.

Overall I had much higher hopes for this vintage of prospects. Especially the "big guns" Lutz, Kechter, Hauf and Elias have, for varying reasons, not lived up to my expectations, yet.
We'll see how things turn out for them in the end.

Really? He should be there, I remember ranking him, because he was a big omission in the October list, and I was debating with myself for a while where to put him. It was either before or after Hübner.
After I made my ranking on eliteprospects, I must have forgotten him when I typed up the list as I did before, when I realised that embedding did not work.

All of the lists are awesome and include many, many names that the average fan just isn't aware of.

Rollinger was the only one of note that I didn't see in the listing and at the moment, I'm thinking that a strong U18 tourney in Landshut and Kaufbeuren gets him a late round selection.

Due to COVID some of the numbers are a bit inflated since teams had to occasionally play their youngsters a lot more when there were no other players available.

True Words. Lutz has the most potential, but I currently see him as a midround pick at most with a future in Europe.

I have only seen two games from Rollinger so far. He has short legs and can't go at a fast pace. That is striking. Not really interesting for the draft.

I believe he's either originally from Hamburg or at least spent several years living and playing here for parts of his childhood. How he ended up in Denmark, I cannot say.

He was a guest player for a U15 tourney in Berlin sometime within the last 12 months and word is, he was very noticeable and likely the best overall skater there. As you've pointed out, he ended up joining Rögle BK, which has been very active in recent years in grabbing kids from its Scandinavian neighbors as well as from Germany and Austria.

However, he was not part of the U16 camp in Füssen that met up in March.

And that's perhaps a bit interesting because they invited a lotttt of kids to that camp.

Know basically nothing about the kid, but yes he did play in Hamburg for a time 2018/19 season. I think he moved on to Wolfsburg during that season, but nothing after that, until last season. Probably played in a league that was not monitored by sites like eliteprospects.

Will definitely be interesting to see how he does in Sweden, compared to other guys who went that route in the past, like the Eisenmenger brothers or Lean Bergmann. Most other Germans who played in junior hockey in Sweden played for lesser programs in the lower divisions.

I wouldn’t know, but what I do know is that the Salzburg team that plays in the Czech U20 League will be playing in the 2nd division next year, not the 1st.

I have to wonder if it would cause some of the top players to leave.

Just to add to this. Kühner is a little more impressive since he played mostly in the group where the better teams play against each other (still a lot of blowouts), whereas Rendina was not facing the top competition for the most part. On the other hand he is playing on a team (Esslingen) that is far worse than Kühner's team (Heilbronn) even if you adjust for the level of competition.

All of these kids are on my radar and I am looking forward to see them play myself, so I can find out what there stats really mean.

Späth is a little further ahead in his development, and normally I would have already watched him a few times or at least got some first hand accounts from people who have, but due to Covid that was not yet the case.

One thing I should note about his stats is that his team missed the championship round and therefore had to play the so called qualification round to keep their spot in the top division for next season (although there was no relegation this year). This means of his 34 games he played 20 in the southern group of the top division against some of the best teams at this level, but the other 14 games were against noticeably weaker competition. Still his rate of scoring did not jump up that drastically, so while this may have inflated his stats a little, they are still damn impressive for a kid his age at this level.

I am actually working on it right now, but I recently lost a bunch of my data, that I now have to reconstruct by hand, which is very time consuming. I have been at it until 4am for the last couple of nights, but I am not going to be able to keep going on 3 hours of sleep for much longer.
But I hope I will at least be able to update the 2022 and maybe 2023 lists this coming weekend. The other lists may not be ready until after this years' draft.

I could just go by what I remember, but then I would likely overlook some players completely, and I prefer working on complete data (stats, notes, comments, and so on).
The upside of this is that it gives me an oppurtunity to make some changes to my system of data collection which should save me a lot of time and work in the future which should allow me to watch more games and therefore make my lists a little less "stats-heavy".

I am actually working on it right now, but I recently lost a bunch of my data, that I now have to reconstruct by hand, which is very time consuming. I have been at it until 4am for the last couple of nights, but I am not going to be able to keep going on 3 hours of sleep for much longer.
But I hope I will at least be able to update the 2022 and maybe 2023 lists this coming weekend. The other lists may not be ready until after this years' draft.

I could just go by what I remember, but then I would likely overlook some players completely, and I prefer working on complete data (stats, notes, comments, and so on).

Sorry to say, but it will take me a little bit longer. I hurt my back over the weekend and am currently unable to sit up.
And typing this or anything while lying down is annoying, actually painful and surprisingly taxing.

I can share my top 5 for 2022 as they are the only ones I can realitstically see getting drafted. Not that I expect them all to get drafted.

1. Julian Lutz - The only guy I am pretty sure will get drafted, despite missing most of the season.
2a. Luca Hauf
2b. Roman Kechter - I think both Hauf and Kechter could be drafted, many lesser prospects have been drafted in the past, but it is far from a sure thing.
4. Rayan Bettahar - He seems like the kind of dman that teams like to take with a late round pick. Good size, hard shot, a bit of a mean streak, but I don't really expect him to get picked.
5. Simon Wolf - I suck at goalie evaluation and Wolf mostly moved up the ranking because many of the players I had previously ranked ahead of him disappointed me since the last ranking. (On here I had always ranked goalies separately, but in my combined rankings I had him around 10 or 11 before)
But Wolf's track record is not bad, he played well for the most part at the U18 and I see a small chance that a team might take a flyer on him.

I really want to finish the rest of the rankings soon, since this is not just about the guys with a shot at being drafted, but I fiugred the guys at the top were the most interesting ones.
The doctor said a few days bed rest and a couple of physical therapy sessions should be enough so I can at least sit again normally for a few hours every day, but I'll have to wait and see.

Typing this took me well over an hour, so I won't post much in the coming days.
