1967-1969:

October 28, 1967 -- Ted Hampson scored 35 seconds into the game and Roger Crozier made 20 saves in Detroit's 3-1 win at Philly. Detroit also got PPGs from Paul Henderson and Doug Roberts. Doug Favell made 33 saves.
November 22, 1967 -- Bernie Parent made 30 saves and Bill Sutherland scored twice to lead the Flyers to a 4-3 home victory. It was the eighth regular season win in Flyers' history and fourth against an Original Six club.
December 28, 1967 -- The Red Wings out-scored the Flyers 4-2 in the second period en route to a 5-3 home win, the first meeting in Detroit. Gary Bergman (2-0-2) had the go-ahead and insurance goals and Gordie Howe (1-2-3) had three points. The Flyers trailed 3-1 but rallied to tie however Bergman's late second period goal made it 4-3. The Flyers were outshot 38-14, including 31-9 over the last two periods, and the 14 shots remained a franchise low until being limited to 13 against Washington in December 1990. Doug Favell made 33 saves in the loss. Ed Van Impe was drilled by an Alex Delvecchio shot and received 16 stitches to the face and a fractured cheekbone which sidelined him for the next seven games.
January 27, 1968 -- Norm Ullman scored twice and Detroit outshot Philly 36-16 in a 3-2 home win. Bernie Parent made 33 saves. Roger Crozier, who made 14 saves for the win, made his second appearance in the NHL since November when he quit hockey due to personal (health) issues.
November 27, 1968 -- Gordie Howe (2-1-3) scored twice in Detroit's 5-2 win at Philly. Howe scored his 698th goal in his 1,490th game and rumors persisted he would retire when his contract expired. Flyers' head coach Keith Allen said "Don't believe it. He'll play until his kids are in the lineup. He's never abused himself. He's a clean living guy."
December 1, 1968 -- Bernie Parent made 35 saves in a 3-3 tie at Detroit. The Wings led 2-0 in the first period but the Flyers completed the rally on Jim Johnson's third period tying goal.
December 27, 1968 -- The Red Wings rallied from three one-goal deficits in a 3-3 tie at Detroit. Future Hall-of-Famer Allan Stanley, in his final NHL season, gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead but Pete Stemkowski evened the game late in the third period. Detroit's General Manager Sid Abel coached the team while head coach Bill Gadsby watched from the press box in an attempt to shake up the team from a recent slump.
January 19, 1969 -- Jean-Guy Gendron (2-0-2) scored twice and Bernie Parent made 33 saves in a 3-1 home win for the Flyers. Gordie Howe scored the Red Wings' only goal.
February 4, 1969 -- Roy Edwards stopped 39 shots in Detroit's 2-0 road win. Garry Unger scored in the first period and Alex Delvecchio added an ENG.
February 23, 1969 -- Roy Edwards made 28 saves and Detroit scored three times in each period en route to a 9-1 home win. Pete Stemkowski (2-1-3), Frank Mahovlich (2-0-2) and Wayne Connolly (2-0-2) each scored twice and Hank Monteith (0-3-3), who had 17 career points, had three in this game. Bernie Parent (14 saves, 18 shots) was replaced by Doug Favell (26 saves, 31 shots) with the Red Wings ahead 4-0. Detroit held a 49-29 shots advantage.
October 23, 1969 -- Bernie Parent made 37 saves and Roy Edwards stopped 34 shots in a 2-2 tie at Detroit. All four goals were during power plays and the two scored by the Flyers came in a span of 2:12.
November 26, 1969 -- Bernie Parent made 37 saves and Roger Crozier stopped 30 shots in a 1-1 tie at Philly. Bill Sutherland gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead 1:20 into the game. In the 1960s, the Flyers had a 2-6-4 record in 12 games against the Red Wings.

1970-1974:

January 3, 1970 -- Roger Crozier made 35 stops and the line of Alex Delvecchio (3-1-4), Frank Mahovlich (1-3-4) and Gordie Howe (0-4-4) combined for 12 points in Detroit's 6-1 win at Philly. It was Delvecchio's third career hat trick.
January 17, 1970 -- Frank Mahovlich (2-1-3) and Alex Delvecchio (1-2-3) led Detroit to a 5-3 home win. Doug Favell made 37 saves for the Flyers.
January 29, 1970 -- Gordie Howe (1-2-3) and Roger Crozier (36 saves) led Detroit to a 4-3 home win. Bernie Parent made 35 saves.
February 8, 1970 -- Jean-Guy Gendron (2-0-2) scored twice and Bernie Parent made 31 saves in the Flyers' first ever win in Detroit, 5-3. Andre Lacroix (1-2-3) and Simon Nolet (0-3-3) both had three points. The Flyers also snapped an 0-5-2 skid in this series.
November 5, 1970 -- Gordie Howe (1-1-2) and Roy Edwards (34 saves) led Detroit to a 3-1 home win.
November 22, 1970 -- The line of Frank Mahovlich (2-1-3), Alex Delvecchio (0-4-4) and Gordie Howe (2-1-3) combined for 10 of Detroit's 12 points in a 4-2 win.
December 10, 1970 -- Tommy Webster snapped a third period tie and then added an ENG in Detroit's 3-1 home win. Don McLeod made 27 saves in the win, he later joined the Flyers for a brief period and won just three NHL games in 18 appearances. Gary Bergman of the Red Wings was tossed early in the game for a cross-checking major penalty.
January 16, 1971 -- Cliff Schmautz (2-1-3), Bob Kelly (2-1-3) and Bobby Clarke (0-2-2) recorded all eight (4-4-8) individual points while Bernie Parent made 28 saves in the Flyers' 4-2 win in Detroit. Schmautz scored with one second remaining in the opening period. Philly entered the game with three wins in 19 games (3-12-4) in this series.
January 31, 1971 -- Doug Favell made 26 saves and Gary Dornhoefer (2-0-2) scored twice in the Flyers' 3-1 home win. Dornhoefer scored the GWG with 3:21 to play and added an ENG with one second to play. Lew Morrison tied the game 1-1 8:03 into the third period. That day, the Flyers made a major transaction which involved Bernie Parent being sent to Toronto and Rick MacLeish coming to Philly.
March 4, 1971 -- Detroit's Gerry Gray, whose career NHL record finished 1-5-1, made 38 saves in a 2-2 tie.
November 13, 1971 -- Al Karlander scored twice and Al Smith made 24 saves as Detroit recorded a 6-3 in Philadelphia. It would be the last win in Philly for Detroit until March 28, 1987.
December 2, 1971 -- Doug Favell made 26 saves and Bobby Clarke scored in Philadelphia's 1-1 tie in the Spectrum.
December 11, 1971 -- Marcel Dionne (2-0-2) scored the last two goals, Al Karlander (2-1-3) scored twice in the first period and Mickey Redmond (0-3-3) assisted on each goal in the first period of Detroit's 6-3 home win. Jim Johnson (2-0-2) scored consecutive goals for the Flyers to knot the game 3-3 through two periods.
January 11, 1972 -- Al Smith made 26 saves and Al Karlander (1-2-3) had three points in Detroit's 5-0 home win. The Red Wings cored three times in the third period. Bill Clement fought Ron Harris with under four minutes to play leading coach Fred Shero to say "My guy was taking a beating." Gary Dornhoefer interceded in that fight and was ejected.
February 3, 1972 -- Gary Dornhoefer (1-2-3), who missed the prior game with flu, was named the game's top star in a 5-4 Flyers' home win. Bruce Gamble made 30 saves. Philly held a 36-34 shots advantage. Marcel Dionne's (2-1-3) two goals gave Detroit a 2-0 lead.
February 27, 1972 -- Doug Favell made 33 saves and Ross Lonsberry (1-1-2) had two points in the Flyers' 3-1 road win. It was the team's third win at Olympia Stadium in their 14th try (3-9-2).
October 14, 1972 -- Roy Edwards made 21 saves and Marcel Dionne (2-1-3) led the offense in Detroit's 5-0 home win. Bobby Taylor made 40 saves in the loss. There were three fights in the game, including Bobby Clarke and Alex Delvecchio. Detroit held a 32-12 shots advantage over the last two periods (4-0 in goals).
October 26, 1972 -- Doug Favell made 34 saves and Bill Flett snapped a tie with 5:50 to play in Philly's 2-1 home win. The Red Wings entered the game 6-0-0 and had out-scored opponents 31-11.
November 25, 1972 -- Alex Delvecchio (2-0-2) recorded the 1,219th point of his career (an ENG) in the Red Wings' 6-4 home victory. Dick Redmond (1-2-3) had three points. Detroit led 3-0 13:05 into the game and outshot Philly 19-4 in the opening period. The Flyers came within a goal on three occasions.
January 23, 1973 -- Simon Nolet (2-1-3) rallied the Flyers to a 4-4 tie at home, recording a goal and an assist in the third period with Philly down 4-2. Alex Delvecchio scored his 450th NHL goal for Detroit.
February 28, 1973 -- The Red Wings registered a 6-5 home win rallying from three deficits. Dick Redmond and Marcel Dionne scored twice for the Wings while Bill Flett (2-2-4) and Bill Barber each scored twice for Philly. Dave Schultz (against Nick Libbett and Larry Johnston) was involved in two of the game's four fights; also, Rick MacLeish bloodied Henry Boucha and Bobby Clarke fought Thommie Bergman. When Boucha skated off the ice, he was bloodied but raised his index finger to the crowd who cheered. Detroit's head coach Johnny Wilson said "Something should be done about this. They're letting brutality get in the game. You don't win hockey games playing like animals."
October 14, 1973-- Bernie Parent made 26 saves and the Flyers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 5-2 at home. Rick MacLeish and Don Saleski both scored SHGs and two points. MacLeish also had 10 of the Flyers' 49 (49-to-28) shots on goal. Roy Edwards made 44 saves. Dave Schultz had the GWG. Schultz fought Tom Mellor in the third period which led to the ejection of the Wings' Larry Johnston for arguing with referee Art Skov.
November 7, 1973 -- Bernie Parent made 21 saves and the Flyers scored four times in the third period en route to a 4-1 win at Detroit. Bill Barber snapped a scoreless tie 19 seconds into the third period, Rick MacLeish (0-3-3) had three assists and Ross Lonsberry (2-0-2) scored twice. Doug Grant made 28 saves but was repalced after the Flyers took a 4-1 lead. Following the game, Detroit fired head coach Ted Garvin after 11 games (2-8-1 record) and replaced him with Alex Delvecchio who was in his 23rd year playing for the Red Wings; however, according to NHL rules, a player-coach was not allowed and thus Delvecchio retired from playing.
February 2, 1974 -- Bobby Clarke (3-3-6) and Ross Lonsberry (3-0-3) had hat tricks and 15 players registered a point in the Flyers' 12-2 drubbing of Detroit in Philadelphia. Clarke and Lonsberry were joined by Simon Nolet (1-4-5) and Bill Barber (2-1-3) as players with 3+ points. The Flyers had 22 assists which set a team record (later tied in 1984 vs. Pittsburgh). Ten players had 2+ points, 5 players had one point and only two (Jim Watson and Andre Dupont) were held without a point. The Flyers held a 55-35 shot advantage including 40 over the last two periods. Because of the score, Bernie Parent (23 saves, 24 shots) was replaced by Bobby Taylor ( 11 saves, 12 shots) in the third period. The Flyers out-scored Detroit 5-1 in both the first and third periods. Mickey Redmond scored both Detroit goals. Bill McKenzie played the entire game and gave up all 12 goals.
February 20, 1974 -- The Flyers scored three PPGs and skated past the Red Wings 3-1 in Detroit. Four players collected all the points for the winners: Rick MacLeish (2-1-3), Bobby Clarke (1-1-2), Gary Dornhoefer (0-2-2) and Bill Barber (0-2-2). The Flyers had 21 first period shots but just a 1-0 lead. Bernie Parent lost a shutout with 14 seconds to play.
March 7, 1974 -- Simon Nolet recorded his third career NHL hat trick (3-1-4) and the Flyers clinched a playoff spot with a 6-1 home win. Bernie Parent (26 saves), Bobby Clarke (0-3-3) and Rick MacLeish (1-2-3) played key roles. Bill Clement attempted the Flyers' first regular season penalty shot but he was stopped by Jim Rutherford.
November 27, 1974 -- Reggie Leach (3-1-4) recorded his first hat trick with the Flyers and Bobby Clarke (1-4-5) added five points in a 6-2 home win. Leach had a game-high 10 shots as the Flyers outshot Detroit 46-16, including 31-9 over the last two periods. Doug Grant made 40 saves and Doug Roberts had both goals for Detroit.
December 21, 1974 -- Despite six power plays in the opening period, the Red Wings settled for a 2-2 tie teams in Detroit. The Wings had a 5-0 advantage in PP chances through the opening 15:49 and finished 1-for-8 while the Flyers were 0-for-3 on PPs. The Flyers led 2-1 through the opening period but Earl Anderson evened the score midway through the third period.

1975-1979:

February 19, 1975 -- Walt McKechnie, acquired the day prior to the game in a trade, scored the GWG on a PPG with under nine minutes to play in Detroit's 4-3 win at Philly. The PP was issued after ref Wally Harris nullified a Reggie Leach score because of a high-sticking minor to Bobby Clarke. Jim Rutherford made 30 saves. The Flyers entered the third period trailing 3-1 but scored two PPGs to tie the game. Bernie Parent let in four goals on 21 shots. Detroit had won just nine times in the prior 51 games (9-32-10).
March 9, 1975 -- Bill Barber (1-3-4), Rick MacLeish (2-2-4), Bill Clement (2-1-3) and Bobby Clarke (2-0-2) led the Flyers to an 8-5 home win. Philly outshot Detroit 47-27. Philly out-scored Detroit 4-3 in the second period which finished with the Wings' Gary Bergman scoring with one second to play.
October 19, 1975 -- Wayne Stephenson made 24 saves and five different Flyers scored in the Flyers' 5-1 home win. Philly dominated the opening period 18-4 in shots and 2-0 in goals. Bob Kelly and Bobby Clarke each had two points.
November 15, 1975 -- Jim Rutherford made 30 saves and Walt McKechnie scored twice in Detroit's 3-1 win at home. The Flyers entered the game 11-2-5 while Detroit was 4-10-3.
March 6, 1976 -- Orest Kindrachuk (3-0-3) scored the only hat trick in his Flyers' career in Philly's 6-1 home win. Bill Barber (1-1-2) added his 40th goal of the season. Wayne Stephenson made 22 saves. At the 12:13 mark of the middle period, a brawl led to the ejections of Dave Schultz and Jack McIlhargey from Philly and Dennis Hextall and Nick Libbett from the Red Wings.
March 20, 1976 -- The Red Wings snapped the Flyers' NHL record-tying 23 game unbeaten streak (17-0-6), shared with the 1940-41 Boston Bruins, with a 4-2 win at Detroit. Jim Rutherford made 33 saves and Michel Bergeron (1-2-3), who had three points, scored late in the second period to expand the lead to 3-1. The Flyers last prior defeat came January 26 in Atlanta. The Red Wings entered the game with a record of 22-40-9 (53 points), 14th best in the NHL, to the Flyers' mark of 47-10-14 (108 points), which was second best in the League.
October 17, 1976 -- Rick MacLeish registered four points (1-3-4), Bobby Clarke (0-3-3) and Tom Bladon (0-3-3) had three assists, and Bob Kelly (2-0-2) scored twice in the Flyers' 7-4 home win. Gary Inness picked up the victory, one of three in his Flyers' career. Philly went 3-for-4 on the PP. The Flyers led 3-0 at the 6:15 mark. Philly outshot Detroit 17-14 in the first period and 34-28 in the game. The Flyers entered the early season game with a 1-3-1 record but went 6-0-1 in the next seven.
November 4, 1976 -- Eddie Giacomin made 24 saves and Nick Libbett (1-1-2) had two points in the Red Wings' 3-2 home win. Gary Dornhoefer (1-1-2) had two points for the Flyers who were held off the scoreboard until the third period. At this point, the Flyers had a record of 5-16-3 in 24 games played at Detroit.
November 16, 1976 -- Orest Kindrachuk snapped a scoreless tie with just 2:05 to play and the Flyers shutout Detroit for the first time, 2-0 in Philadelphia. Bernie Parent (27 saves) recorded his 42nd career shutout as he out-dueled Eddie Giacomin (30 saves). Mel Bridgman added an ENG. The only other NHL game that night ended in a scoreless tie between the Cleveland Barons and the Los Angeles Kings. That day, the Flyers learned that goalie Wayne Stepehnson announced his "retirement" over a contract dispute; the sides eventually settled on a pact in the following weeks.
February 17, 1977 -- In a six player deal, Rick Lapointe and Mike Korney were traded to Philadelphia for Terry Murray, Bob Ritchie, Steve Coates and Dave Kelly. Murray was reacquired (for cash) by the Flyers November 1, 1977.
March 5, 1977 -- Bobby Clarke scored one of the most impressive goals of his career when he fooled a Red Wings' defender, swerved and stumbled, and from the seat of his pants beat netminder Jim Rutherford to cap a sensational play which gave Philly a 2-0 lead in an eventual 4-1 win at Detroit. Ross Lonsberry scored twice, Rick MacLeish (1-1-2) scored his 40th goal and Wayne Stephenson made 22 saves. The game had 104 PIMs including a Joe Watson-Dennis Hextall fight in the second period and Andre Dupont (PHI) and Dennis Polonich (DET) finished with 25 PIMs each. November 13, 1977 -- Wayne Stephenson made 23 saves in the Flyers' 3-0 home victory. Ross Lonsberry scored the GWG in the final minute of the first period. Bill Barber scored a SHG in the second period followed by Jimmy Watson's tally in the last minute of the middle period. Eddie Giacomin made 30 saves in the loss, the last of 33 appearances in his career against the Flyers.
November 23, 1977 -- Ron Low made 23 saves and Detroit scored three times in the last 6:13 of the opening period in a 4-1 home win. Low defeated the Flyers for the first time in his career and finished with just two wins in 18 decisions. The announced crowd 16,472 was the largest, through this date, in the history of Olympia Stadium.
January 29, 1978 -- Dale McCourt's third period gave Detroit a 3-3 tie at home. Rick MacLeish scored twice in a span of 2:07 in the middle period to give Philly a 3-2 lead. Reed Larson of Detroit had three (1-2-3) points. There were three fights in the game including a first period brawl featuring Dave Hoyda-Nick Libbett and Andre Dupont-Dennis Hextall. Totals for the game: the Flyers had 65 PIMs to the Red Wings' 39. Paul Holmgren was ejected 3:35 into the game.
February 18, 1978 -- Bill Barber (2-0-2) scored twice in the third period and Bernie Parent made 25 saves in a 4-2 home win. Joe Watson scored 1:43 into the game on a 55-footer and the Flyers led the remainder of the contest. The game had 42 penalties and 136 PIMs highlighted by fights in the second and third periods. Andre St. Laurent (2-0-2) scored both Detroit goals.
October 14, 1978 -- Bernie Parent made 27 saves and the Flyers recorded a 3-1 win in Detroit. After the Red Wings led 1-0, Bill Barber scored a first period PPG and Rick MacLeish scored a second period SHG; Behn Wilson added an ENG.
November 19, 1978 -- Bobby Clarke (1-2-3), Bill Barber and Reggie Leach combined for seven points, all in the first period, in a 4-3 home win. Andre Dupont and Dennis Hextall fought. The Flyers beat the Red Wings for the 12th straight time in Philadelphia. Bobby Kromm, Detroit's head coach, said "They scored three goals my sister could have scored" in criticizing the Flyers' goals against his team's defense.
December 26, 1978 -- The Flyers got a belated Christmas present (game played on a Tuesday afternoon) when they scored twice with goalie Bernie Parent pulled and finished in a 2-2 tie at Detroit. Mel Bridgman scored with 1:35 to play then Bobby Clarke followed with 1:09 remaining. Parent was pulled five seconds prior to Bridgman's goal. Rogie Vachon, who had a shutout for the first 58+ minutes, made 28 saves then said of the tie "It's so frustrating to lose one like this." Bob Dailey (who missed the following two games) hit his head on after being checked by Perry Miller and went into convulsions; however, quick-thinking Behn Wilson, who took pre-med courses, immediately assisted Dailey on the ice and helped open a passage for proper breathing.
January 11, 1979 -- Detroit's Nick Libbett scored a PPG with 29 seconds remaining in a 3-3 tie at Philadelphia. The Red Wings had won just four of their prior 34 (4-20-9) games that season. The tie ended the Flyers' 12-game home winning streak in this series. The Flyers held three one-goal leads but each time Detroit evened the game with a PPG, the last two by Libbett. There were two fights in the game: Rick Lapointe-Dennis Polonich and Rick MacLeish-Andre St. Laurent. The Flyers held a 40-22 shots advantage and Rogatien Vachon made 37 saves.
October 20, 1979 -- Brian Propp (2-2-4), Paul Holmgren (2-0-2) and Reggie Leach (2-0-2) combined for six goals in Philly's 7-3 win. Propp appeared in his fifth NHL game and had nine (3-6-9) points in those five games. It was the Flyers' final appearance at Detroit's Olympia Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Joe Louis Arena but construction delays pushed back the opening date of that building. This game was delayed three times due to condensation on the ice.
October 28, 1979 -- Reggie Leach scored with 1:00 to play in the third period lifting the Flyers to a 5-4 home win. Detroit led 2-1 after two periods despite being outshot 31-11. The Flyers rallied in the third period and took a 4-2 lead at the 5:41 mark but the Red Wings evened the game when Flyers' defenseman Norm Barnes accidentally kicked the puck into his own net and the goal was awarded to Danny Labraatan with 2:55 remaining. Dennis Ververgaert (2-1-3) and Leach (2-0-2) both had a pair of goals and Bob Dailey (0-4-4) assisted on the final three tallies. Brian Propp had his sixth consecutive multiple-point game in his eighth career game. Flyers' goalie Phil Myre said "We let in two easy goals and come back to win. What determination! Unbelievable."
December 2, 1979 -- The Flyers' Al Hill (2-0-2) and Detroit's Dale McCourt (2-1-3, 2 PPGs) both scored twice in a 4-4 tie at Philly. The Red Wings scored three times in the third period including twice in the last 6:40 to rally from a 4-2 hole. Bill Barber and Pete Mahovlich (major + minor) fought in the third period and Paul Holmgren's PPG gave Philly a 4-2 lead. The Flyers ended the night with a 17-1-5 record and became the first team in NHL history to play 23 games with just one loss.

1980-1984:

February 9, 1980 -- The Flyers made their first visit to Joe Louis Arena and skated away with a 6-5 victory on a goal by Paul Holmgren (1-2-3) with 2:20 to play. Bill Barber (2-0-2) tied the game with 6:19 remaining. Philly improved to 36-4-13 through 53 games. The Flyers led 3-2 after the second period. Rookie Mike Foligno (2-0-2) had two unassisted goals and Dale McCourt (1-2-3) had three points. Detroit scored three times, two by Foligno, on five shots in the third period to take a 5-4 lead but Foligno was issued a 10-minute misconduct with 57 seconds to play after an altercation with Mel Bridgman. November 15, 1980 -- Bill Barber scored his 300th NHL goal and the Flyers improved to 13-3-2, including 11-0-2 in the last 13 games, with a 5-2 home win. George Lyle scored both Detroit goals. Paul Holmgren scored with 26 seconds in the second period to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead. Pete Peeters, who was replaced after two periods due to an awkward landing on his back and also fighting the flu, and Phil Myre combined to make 23 saves.
December 6, 1980 -- Detroit snapped an 11-game winless skid and coach Wayne Maxner got his first career NHL victory (fifth try), after replacing Ted Lindsay, in a 4-2 home win. Gilles Gilbert made 26 saves, Dale McCourt (1-2-3) had three points and Mike Foligno's PPG snapped a 2-2 third period tie. With the game tied 1-1, the Red Wings killed a 90-second 2-man Flyers' PP. Detroit entered the game 3-17-4 and the Flyers started the night as the NHL's best team at 18-5-4. The Flyers' 11-game (7-0-4) unbeaten streak in this series was also snapped. The game had 258 PIMs (134 to the Flyers, 124 to Detroit) and included a brawl at 10:45 of the final period started when Detroit took exception to Gary Morrison's check against Errol Thompson. The melee, highlighted by a Frank Bathe-Mike Foligno fight, had 226 PIMs (118 to the Flyers, 108 to the Red Wings), 31 penalties, 19 misconducts (10 to the Flyers) and ejections to the Flyers' Mel Bridgman (30 PIMs), Bathe (27 PIMs) and Morrison (19 PIMs) and the Red Wings' Foligno (29 PIMs) and Jim Korn (21 PIMs). Bob Dailey (22 PIMs) also had 20+ PIMs in the game.
February 14, 1981 -- An NHL regular season attendance record of 20,039 (since broken) witnessed the Flyers' 3-1 win in Detroit. Rick St. Croix made 35 saves and Rick MacLeish had two points. The Red Wings outshot Philly 36-22.
March 12, 1981 -- The Flyers scored three times in each period and cruised to a a 9-4 victory in Philadelphia. Bobby Clarke scored his 300th regular season goal against Larry Lozinki (21 saves, 27 shots) who replaced Gilles Gilbert (13 saves, 16 shots) after the first period. Brian Propp (1-2-3), Paul Holmgren (0-3-3), Bill Barber (1-2-3), and Kenny Linseman (2-1-3) all had three points. Detroit's Gary McAdam scored eight seconds into the second period but Clarke's goal just over a minute later set the wheels in motion and made it 4-2. Glen Cochrane fought Brad Smith and later Reed Larson.
October 9, 1981 -- In the season opener played at Philadelphia, Bill Barber, who was named the team's captain that day, scored two PPGs in a 2-2 tie. Detroit's Gilles Gilbert made 36 saves. In the second period, the Flyers outshot the Red Wings 21-3 as part of a 38-16 total that night.
October 25, 1981 -- Rick St. Croix had 28 saves and Brian Propp (2-1-3) scored two PPGs in the Flyers' 4-1 win in Detroit. Ken Linseman (1-2-3) and Bill Barber (0-2-2) had multi-point efforts, too. The Flyers won for the seventh straight time.
December 5, 1981 -- Bobby Clarke had a key SHG in the Flyers 5-2 win in Detroit. Philly led 3-0 after one period but the Red Wings tallied two PPGs in the second period and had another advantage when Clarke thwarted the comeback with the shorty. Pete Peeters made 30 saves and Ken Linseman (1-2-3) had three points. Paul Holmgren picked up 33 PIMs and fought Paul Woods during a second period brawl. There were eight misconducts including a game misconduct to Glen Cochrane.
August 25, 1982 -- Reggie Leach signed with Detroit. He was waived by the Flyers late in the 1981-82 season and played one final season in the NHL.
October 24, 1982 -- Ex-Flyer Reggie Leach opened the scoring with the first goal of his Red Wings' career but the Flyers rallied for a 7-4 home win. Tim Kerr (2-0-2), Ron Flockhart (1-2-3) and Bobby Clarke (1-2-3) led the offense. The Flyers outshot Detroit 46-26 including 32-12 through two periods. Paul Holmgren had two separate majors (high-stick and cross-checking) and the Flyers killed both successfully. Willie Huber (1-2-3) had three points and Greg Stefan made 39 saves for Detroit. Prior to the game, Clarke was recognized for playing in 1,000 NHL regular season games (this was 1,001). Detroit head coach Nick Polano said "Bobby Clarke is someone you want on your team. He has heart, is a tremendous competitor, gives the same effort for every game and he can win a lot of games for his team."
December 16, 1982 -- Pelle Lindbergh made 38 saves and Bobby Clarke (2-2-4) recorded the 1,100th point of his career on a goal, one of seven straight for the Flyers, in a 7-2 home win. Brian Propp (2-0-2), Mark Howe (0-3-3) and Ron Flockhart (0-3-3) contributed. Dwight Foster gave Detroit a 1-0 lead nine seconds into the game when he stole a pass by Howe and went in on a breakaway. The Flyers scored three PPGs. The key moment in the game, with the Flyers leading 2-1 midway in the second period, Danny Gare was issued an unsportsmanlike minor, ejected and Detroit picked up a bench minor leading to a Darryl Sittler goal 30 seconds into a 5-on-3. Reggie Leach played for the Red Wings. Tim Kerr suffered a torn cartilage in his right knee during his first shift since November 10 (torn knee ligaments at Buffalo) and did not return until February 10.
December 27, 1982 -- Bobby Clarke had five (3-2-5) points and his fifth NHL career hat trick and Ray Allison added four (2-2-4) points in Philly's 8-4 road win. Brian Propp and Miroslav Dvorak each had three assists. The Flyers scored six straight goals including winning the second period 4-0. Derek Smith and Greg Smith gave Detroit an early 2-0 lead. The Flyers trailed 3-1 after the first period in which John Ogrodnick (1-2-3) had three points by the 12:11 mark. Ex-Flyer Reggie Leach scored his team's final goal.
December 17, 1983 -- Ilkka Sinisalo scored with under seven minutes to play and Bob Froese made 32 saves in a 3-3 OT tie played at Detroit. The Red Wings scored three PPGs, two by Ron Duguay (2-1-3), in under twelve minutes during the second period to take a 3-1 lead. In days prior to this game, rumors circulated that the Flyers were interested in acquiring Duguay but didn't want to relinquish Sinisalo so the deal was nixed.
December 18, 1983 -- Steve Yzerman scored through a maze of fallen players with one second to play and the teams played to a 3-3 tie in Philadelphia. Ed Mio made 36 saves for the Red Wings. The Flyers pulled ahead 3-2 on a PPG by Tim Kerr with 4:48 remaining.
January 7, 1984 -- Tim Kerr (2-0-2), Dave Poulin (2-0-2) and Brian Propp (1-2-3) led Philly to an 8-4 win at Detroit. The Flyers had a 19-7 shot advantage and 2-0 lead after one period. In the second period, the teams combined for seven goals, giving the Flyers a 6-3 after two periods. In the first period, Ilkka Sinisalo and Lane Lambert fought. In the second period, Paul Holmgren fought John Barrett. In the final minute of the third period, a multi-player brawl involved the Flyers' Randy Holt and Glen Cochrane and Detroit's Reed Larson. The chippy game featured 112 PIMs including a match penalty against Detroit's Claude Loiselle who was eventually suspended six games for a violent slash to the head of Bobby Clarke with 4:57 to play. After the game, Clarke was asked about the slash and said "I don't know what happened. He hit me over the head. I was stunned. If he was still around, I probably would have swung back."
January 8, 1984 -- Rick MacLeish's return to the Flyers ended when he was dealt to Detroit. GM Bob McCammon said "We had to do what was best for Ricky. He wants to continue playing. He's going to get a chance in Detroit. Hopefully, he'll extend his career another year. We could have kept him around for the rest of the year, but then he's just going to disintegrate. He's not going to play much with all the youngsters we have. It's not going to help him or the hockey club if he's sitting around all the time. It was tough news to take, but he took it well. It's not easy. I don't think he liked it. But if he's going to play in the National League, I think this is a great opportunity for him. If Ricky MacLeish had come to the front and scored on a consistent basis or done the things we thought he could do, he would have stayed with us." MacLeish played 25 games for the Red Wings then retired.
October 10, 1984 -- The Flyers traded Darryl Sittler to Detroit for Murray Craven and Joe Paterson. "I respect Darryl as a friend, a hard player and a great teammate. We're all upset about it, but this was necessary. Losing Darryl will hurt us early. But we were looking for help at left wing. Now, we should have it," said GM Bob Clarke. Sittler played 61 games for the Red Wings while Craven was a regular for many seasons and Paterson was a key contributor in the 1985 Conference Finals against Quebec.

1985-1989:

January 16, 1985 -- Peter Zezel's third period goal gave Philly a 1-1 tie at Detroit. Darryl Sittler, in his first game against the Flyers since he was traded to Detroit, scored late in the second period. Eddie Mio (32 saves) and Pelle Lindbergh (28 saves) were named the game's top two stars. Each team was whistled for only one minor penalty in the game.
January 17, 1985 -- Tim Kerr (4-0-4) tied a team-record with four goals, including a natural hat trick, leading the Flyers to a 7-5 home win. Ilkka Sinisalo (2-1-3) and Peter Zezel (0-3-3) had three points each. The Flyers extended their home unbeaten streak in this series to 26 games (20-0-6). March 28, 1985 -- Derrick Smith and Todd Bergen scored 1:42 apart in the third period of Philly's 3-1 home win. Philly outshot Detroit 41-19. The Flyers held a 31-12 shots advantage after two periods but the score was tied 1-1 with Rich Sutter and Steve Yzerman scoring. Pelle Lindbergh made 18 saves. Corrado Micalef stopped 38 shots. Ilkka Sinisalo's streak with points in consecutive games ended at 12 (he finished the season with points in 16 of the last 17 games). The Flyers won for the 12th time in the last 13 games and captured the franchise's eighth division title in 18 years of existence. Coupled with Edmonton's loss in Boston, the Flyers moved to the top of the NHL's standings with 105 points to the Oilers' 104. December 3, 1985 -- Detroit's Mark Laforest made his NHL debut and stopped 35 shots in the Red Wings' 4-1 win at home. Laforest was recalled from the AHL the prior day after a 9-0 record. Reed Larson had three points including the tying estimated at 65-feet. Ron Duguay scored the GWG. Philadelphia was 10-0-4 in the previous 14 encounters against Detroit and 17-1-8 in the prior 26 games in this series.
December 14, 1985 -- Dave Poulin's GWG came with 2:01 to play and the Flyers out-scored the Red Wings 4-0 in the third period en route to a 6-4 road win. Doug Crossman (2-0-2), chosen the game's top star, scored twice including the game-tying goal early in the third period. Flyers' defensemen accumulated seven points (2-5-7). Bob Froese (18 saves, 22 shots) was replaced by Darren Jensen (9 saves, 9 shots) with 5 minutes left in the second period and Detroit ahead 4-2. Each team scored two PPGs in a penalty-filled game. The Flyers were whistled for 23 (66 PIMs) infractions and Detroit had 19 (58 PIMs) penalties. January 23, 1986 -- Darren Jensen made 21 saves and Tim Kerr (1-1-2) and Peter Zezel (0-2-2) both had two points in the first period of a 5-2 home win. The Flyers out-shot Detroit 20-6 in the first period and 41-23 in the game. Eddie Mio (18 saves, 20 shots), who was ill, was replaced after the first period by Mark Laforest (18 saves, 21 shots). Ron Sutter had four minors including three at separate times in the middle period. The teams' records after this game: Philly was 34-14-0 (68 points) and Detroit was 10-33-5 (25 points).
November 13, 1986 -- Murray Craven (3-0-3) had his first NHL hat trick which matched a team record for goals in one period in a 7-5 home win. It was the fifth time in team history a Flyers' player scored three times in one period. The Flyers out-shot Detroit 51-24 including 42-17 through two periods and 23-11 in the second period when Detroit was out-scored 4-1. Greg Stefan (36 saves, 42 shots) was replaced after the second period by Glen Hanlon (8 saves, 9 shots). The line of Lindsay Carson (1-2-3), Rick Tocchet (1-1-2) and Ron Sutter (0-3-3) combined for six points when Philly led 2-0 8:39 into the game. Peter Zezel's early third period goal gave Philly a 7-2 lead. Detroit's Shawn Burr (3-0-3) ended the game with a natural hat trick in the third period. The Flyers extended the team's home unbeaten streak to 29 games in this series (23-0-6).
March 28, 1987 -- Detroit snapped the Flyers' 29-game (23-0-6) home win streak in this series with a 5-1 win. The last prior win in Philadelphia came November 13, 1971. Glen Hanlon made 30 saves. Detroit was 3-for-6 on PPs while the Flyers went 1-for-8. Brent Ashton and Mel Bridgman scored in the first period then Bob Probert made it 3-0 in the second period. April 1, 1987 -- Tim Kerr scored his 56th and 57th goals, both on PPs, and Ron Hextall made 28 saves in the Flyers' 2-1 road win. Hextall, who lost his shutout bid with 2:21 remaining, was chosen the game's number one star. A win or tie would have given Detroit their first division title in 22 years. The teams totalled 154 PIMs (79 to Philly, 75 to Detroit) including 104 in the opening period. There were seven separate fights: Craig Berube vs. Bob Probert, Daryl Stanley vs. Gerard Gallant, Rick Tocchet vs. Rick Zombo (both ejected), Brian Dobbin vs. Joey Kocur, Lindsay Carson vs. Kocur, Berube vs. Probert again and Dobbin vs. Dave Barr. Greg Stefan (7 saves, 8 shots), who was ejected during a first period scrum was replaced by Glen Hanlon (18 saves, 19 shots). Tocchet was suspended for the next two games due to his fifth game misconduct of the season.
June 13, 1987 -- Mark Laforest was traded to Philadelphia for the Flyers' 2nd round choice (Bob Wilkie) in the 1987 Entry Draft.
December 11, 1987 -- Bob Probert scored with 6:10 remaining in a game that ended in a 3-3 tie at Detroit. Brian Propp led Philly with two points. The Flyers led 3-1 in the second period when Dave Brown scored. Mark Laforest made 24 saves for the Flyers. Glen Hanlon made 31 saves for the Red Wings; Hanlon committed a delay of game penalty in the final 93 seconds which carried over into the overtime. Rumors circulated that the Flyers and Red Wings were working on a deal with Ilkka Sinisalo being shipped to Detroit for Lee Norwood and left wing Brent Ashton.
February 21, 1988 -- Rick Tocchet (3-1-4) scored his first career hat trick and Ron Hextall made 26 saves to lead the Flyers to a 5-3 home win. Tocchet completed the hat trick when Dave Poulin opted to shun an easy goal and passed to Tocchet who scored an ENG. "Dave Poulin is the MVP of the league as far as I'm concerned. He's unselfish on and off the ice, and I owe him a steak dinner," said Tocchet. Greg Smyth scored the only goal in his Flyers' career to give Philly an early 1-0 lead and afterwards said "I went across the circles and shot. It's my first goal in 82 games, since I was a junior. It feels great. My parents in Toronto are always asking me if I scored. They look at Derrick Smith's name and tell me they saw that I scored, but the name is spelled wrong." Mike Keenan coached his 300th NHL game and owned a 183-91-26 (.653) mark.
February 23, 1988 -- The Flyers out-scored the Red Wings 7-0 in the third period and rallied for an improbable and remarkable 11-6 win at Detroit. Ron Hextall (10 saves, 13 shots), was struggled with the flu and was scheduled to start the game, was replaced by Mark Laforest (13 saves, 16 shots) after vomiting moments before the opening faceoff. Laforest played 45 seconds but Hextall re-emerged and finished the period with Detroit ahead 3-1. The Red Wings extended the lead to 5-1 12:12 into the second period. The Flyers scored three times in the next 90 seconds to pull within 5-4. Steve Yzerman gave Detroit a 6-4 lead which was the fifth goal scored in a span of 4:55. Scott Mellanby and Bob Probert fought 42 seconds later. Detroit led 6-4 through two periods. Defensemen Doug Crossman, J.J. Glen Hanlon (24 saves, 34 shots) was replaced by Sam St. Laurent (1 save, 2 shots). The Flyers out-scored Detroit 7-0 in the third period and held a 13-5 shots advantage. November 4, 1988 -- Murray Craven scored on a breakaway with 13 seconds remaining in the third period leading Philly to a 4-3 win at Detroit. Upon scoring, Craven's eye was bloodied by a violent high-stick from Miroslav Frycer who was charged with an intent-to-injure match penalty and eventually suspended 10 games. Brian O'Neill of the NHL, said ''In my judgment, Frycer used excessive and careless tactics to check an opponent and, through this action, caused a serious injury.'' Craven, who was readmitted to the hospital after being released, missed the following five games. Craven said later "I'm not really bitter about the situation. I believe that he wasn't trying to hit me in the head. At least, I want to believe that. I want to believe that no player would intentionally try to do this to another player. The doctors are 95 percent sure that everything is OK. They can't be 100 per cent until they know for sure that the bleeding has stopped. I've never been much of a fan of face shields, but my eye was pushed back in the socket quite far, and I can't take another hit like that. If I don't wear a shield, I wouldn't be back for at least another month." The goal came 33 seconds after Steve Yzerman completed a hat trick and tied the game at 3-3. Detroit outshot Philly 34-16 including 14-3 in the second period when the Wings profited from five PP chances (Philly had zero) but didn't score in the period. November 12, 1988 -- Steve Yzerman (3-0-3) and Gerard Gallant (0-4-4) led Detroit to a 5-4 win in Philadelphia. It was Yzerman's sixth career hat trick and his second in less than 10 days against the Flyers. Steve Chiasson (0-3-3) added three assists. November 1, 1989 -- Tim Kerr (2-1-3) scored the tying goal with 7:49 to play in a 5-5 tie at Detroit. Gord Murphy also had three points and his consecutive goals gave Philly a 3-2 lead. Ken Wregget suffered a torn hamstring (was out until November 18) in the third period with Philly leading 4-3. Wregget's replacement Pete Peeters surrendered two goals on the first two shots he faced including four seconds after entering the game. This was the first of three straight games in which a Flyers' goalie was replaced by injury (Wregget, Ron Hextall and Pete Peeters).

February 16, 1990 -- Steve Yzerman had the second six-point (2-4-6) game of his career, including his 46th and 47th goals, and Gerard Gallant scored twice (2-1-3) in the Red Wings' 9-6 victory at home. Yves Racine's first NHL goal, at the 2:52 mark, gave Detroit the lead for the remainder of the game. Each team scored four times in the third period. April 1, 1990 -- In the regular season finale, Steve Yzerman's tying goal came with 3:20 to play of a 3-3 tie in Philly. Both Bruce Hoffort and Glen Hanlon made 29 saves. Ron Sutter, Rich Tocchet and Jiri Latal each had two points for the Flyers. Had the Flyers lost, they would have jumped above Detroit in the selection order for the upcoming NHL draft (Detroit drafted 3rd, the Flyers 4th).
October 7, 1990 -- The Flyers scored seven consecutive goals en route to a 7-2 win in the team's home opener. Rick Tocchet (1-2-3) and Jiri Latal (1-2-3) led the offense and Ken Wregget made 19 saves. Jeff Chychrun, who fought Joey Kocur, had two assists. Steve Yzerman gave Detroit a 1-0 lead 26 seconds into the game and the Red Wings led 2-0 at the 3:23 mark. Tim Cheveldae (15 saves, 20 shots) was replaced by Glen Hanlon (12/14).
December 15, 1990 -- Sergei Fedorov (1-2-3) had three points and Glen Hanlon made 27 saves in Detroit's 3-1 win at Philly. A rare minor penalty was called against the Flyers when their request to measure Glen Hanlon's stick failed.
December 18, 1990 -- Sergei Federov snapped a 1-1 tie with 2:54 to play in a 3-1 home win for the Red Wings. Glen Hanlon made 19 saves. Detroit outshot Philly 16-4 in the third period and 30-20 in the game. Ron Hextall made 27 saves.
September 21, 1991 -- Sergei Federov scored twice in the Red Wings' 4-2 preseason win at Orlando, Florida.
September 22, 1991 -- The Flyers won 4-2 in a preseason game at Miami, Florida as Mark Howe snapped a third period tie. Ron Hextall was suspended by the NHL for six games during the upcoming regular season for slashing Jim Cummins, who was suspended three games when he retaliated by slashing Hextall in the mask. The Sunday night game drew a disappointing crowd of 4,425. The prior night, the Rangers and Capitals met and 8,836 showed. The games were held to gauge local interest in a possible expansion franchise for south Florida. Prior to the game, the Flyers made a four-player trade with the St. Louis Blues with Ron Sutter going to St. Louis and Rod Brind'Amour shipped to Philadelphia as the main components.
January 21, 1992 -- Detroit out-scored the Flyers 5-0 in the second period en route to a 7-3 rout at home. Sergei Federov (1-3-4) had four points in less than 12 minutes. Six of the ten goals came via special teams. It marked the second time in Ron Hextall's career that he surrendered five goals in one period (also December 21, 1986 in St. Louis). Paul Ysebart (1-2-3) and Jimmy Carson (2-0-2) helped Detroit. The Wings held a 34-14 shots advantage after two periods.
March 21, 1992 -- Steve Duchesne scored a PPG with 4:12 left in the third and Dominic Roussel stopped all 21 shots he faced after replacing Ron Hextall (5 saves, 8 shots) in Philly's 4-3 home win. The Flyers rallied from one-goal deficits three times to tie Detroit. The Red Wings led 3-2 after one period and Hextall was removed for Roussel. Bob Probert was assessed an elbowing minor, a 10-minute misconduct and an unsportmanlike penalty with 7:03 to play then Shawn Burr was issued an elbowing minor with 4:24 remaining setting up Duchesne's PPG 12 seconds later; the Wings were then given a bench penalty for complaining. The Flyers were 3-for-10 on PPs.
July 8, 1992 -- Free agent and future Hall-of-Famer Mark Howe signed with Detroit.
October 1, 1992 -- Brent Fedyk was traded to Philadelphia by Detroit for the Flyers' 4th round choice (later traded to Boston) in the 1993 Entry Draft.
December 11, 1992 -- Detroit out-scored the Flyers 4-0 in the second period, including two goals by Dino Ciccarelli (2-0-2), in a 4-2 home win. Sergei Federov (1-1-2) returned to the lineup after missing eight games in which the Red Wings were just 1-6-1 and snapped a scoreless tie. The Red Wings scored three times in 96 seconds the opening 3:30 of the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Dominic Roussel (20 saves, 24 shots) was replaced after the second period by Stephane Beauregard (16 saves, 16 shots) who also had an assist. Mark Howe played for Detroit.
January 17, 1993 -- Steve Yzerman (1-4-5) had five points and Detroit recovered from an early three-goal deficit to win 7-4 in Philadelphia. The Flyers scored an even-strength goal, a PPG and a SHG to lead 3-0 12:23 into the first period. The Red Wings responded with the next four goals and held a 4-3 lead after two periods. Keith Acton tied the game with a third period goal but Dino Ciccarelli scored with 9:57 remaining for the eventual GWG. Sheldon Kennedy made it 6-4. Tim Cheveldae made 23 saves in the win. Tommy Soderstrom made 29 stops in the loss. It would be more than 20 years (March 7, 2013) until the Flyers lost in regulation after leading a game by three or more goals.
February 22, 1993 -- Brent Fedyk set a Flyers' team-record (since broken) for scoring with the least time remaining, 0.8 seconds, in a 5-5 OT tie played at Richfield, Ohio (neutral-site game). The Flyers were the designated home team and attendance for the Monday night game was 13,282. Detroit was 3-for-10 on PPs, while the Flyers were 0-for-3. Mark Recchi scored the first goal but Detroit scored the next three goals which led to the removal of Tommy Soderstrom (12 saves, 15 shots) for Dominic Roussel (24 saves, 26 shots). Goals by Eric Lindros and Greg Paslawski 38 seconds apart tied the game at 3-3. The Red Wings netted two late third-period goals to take a 5-3 lead with 4:53 to play. However, Recchi scored with 2:42 remaining to make the score 5-4 setting up Fedyk's heroics. Recchi (2-1-3), Lindros (1-2-3) and Detroit's Dino Ciccarelli (2-1-3) had three points. Steve Yzerman initially was credited with his 1,000th career point but after the game he informed the official scorer that he didn't touch the puck on the given assist. The NHL subtracted the assist per his request after watching video replays and a point was credited to Steve Chiasson. Two nights later, Yzerman got his 1,000th in a 10-7 loss to Buffalo.
December 23, 1993 -- Sergei Federov's SHG snapped a scoreless tie with 2:57 left in the second period then a bounce off Dino Ciccarelli's skate with 21 seconds left in the same period gave Detroit a 2-0 lead in an eventual 3-1 win at Philly. Tim Cheveldae made 28 saves. Tommy Soderstrom made 27 saves. Mike Sillinger added an ENG. Garry Galley of Philly was tossed for a boarding major in the first period.
June 20, 1993 -- Greg Johnson was traded to Detroit with Philadelphia's 5th round choice (Frederic Deschenes) in the 1994 Entry Draft for Jim Cummins and Philadelphia's 4th round choice (previously acquired, later traded to Boston - Boston selected Charles Paquette) in the 1993 Entry Draft.
September 9, 1993 -- Stewart Malgunas was traded by Detroit for Philadelphia's 5th round choice (David Arsenault) in the 1995 Entry Draft.

February 11, 1994 -- Steve Yzerman scored two SHGs (and had three points) in Detroit's 6-3 home win. The Red Wings led 3-0 after one period and chased Dominic Roussel for Tommy Soderstrom but the Flyers rallied to get within a goal before Dallas Drake increased the lead to 4-2. The Wings had three SHGs including two in the first period.

1995-1999:

November 24, 1995 -- Garth Snow stopped 36 shots, Eric Lindros scored twice (2-0-2) and the Flyers ended Detroit's seven-game winning streak with a 4-1 home victory. Eric Desjardins had a pair of assists on PPGs by Lindros and John LeClair which made it 3-0. Sergei Fedorov and Paul Coffey combined for 17 of Detroit's 37 shots.
December 5, 1995 -- Detroit ended the Flyers' eight-game winning streak with a 5-3 home win. Five different Red Wings scored and Chris Osgood made 19 saves. Detroit scored three times on six shots in the second period. The Red Wings led 4-0 but the Flyers scored the next three goals, including two by Brent Fedyk (2-0-2) before Sergei Federov's ENG.
January 22, 1997 -- Ron Hextall made 32 saves, including three key stops in the final moments of regulation, and John LeClair scored just past the midway point of the third period in a 2-2 OT tie at Detroit. The Red Wings held a 34-20 shots advantage including 3-0 in OT. In the last three minutes of regulation, on separate plays, Rod Brind'Amour (minor), Brendan Shanahan (minor/misconduct) and Eric Lindros (minor) were issued penalties, the latter of which extended into OT. Trent Klatt scored in the first period but Detroit pulled ahead when Nicklas Lidstrom and Vladimir Konstantinov tallied in a 53-second span during the opening 3:35 of the second period. Steve Yzerman had two assists. The teams combined for 0-for-13 on PPs. "They have one loss in 22 games (15-1-6) or something like that, that's a quarter of a season. They're a very confident team. They talk about meeting a team at the right time. We had a little break in that they played last night. But that was probably overcome by the fact they're young and confident," said Red Wings' head coach Scotty Bowman.

June 1, 1997 -- In Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals, Mike Vernon made 26 saves and Joey Kocur scored the go-ahead goal late in the first period in Detroit's 4-2 win at Philly. June 3, 1997 -- In Game Two of the Stanley Cup Finals, Mike Vernon made 29 saves and Brendan Shanahan scored twice to lead the Red Wings to a 4-2 win in Philadelphia. Shanahan (2-0-2) and Steve Yzerman gave Detroit a 2-0 lead in the first period. Rod Brind'Amour (2-0-2), with Janne Niinimaa (0-2-2) assisting on both, scored two PPGs in 69 seconds to even the game 2-2 in the first period. However, the game's turning point came early in the second period when Kirk Maltby's slapshot from just inside the blueline beat Garth Snow (24 saves) and gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead. Shanahan finished the scoring in the third period. Paul Coffey took a Darren McCarty shoulder to the jaw late in the game which sidelined him for Games 3 and 4 at Detroit. Coffey, who began the season with the Red Wings but was criticized by his then-head coach Scotty Bowman (and was traded to the Hartford Whalers then dealt to the Flyers), was a -3, was whistled for three minors, was on the ice for six of Detroit's eight goals through the first two games and was in the penalty box for a seventh. June 5, 1997 -- In Game Three of the Stanley Cup Finals, Sergei Federov (2-2-4) and Martin Lapointe each scored twice in Detroit's 6-1 home win. The Red Wings' went 3-for-5 on the PP while the Flyers went just 1-for-7. Mike Vernon made 21 saves. The Flyers took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game on a John LeClair PPG, the first lead the team had in the series, but Steve Yzerman evened the game on a PPG exactly two minutes later and 19 seconds into an Eric Desjardins' penalty. With Paul Coffey and Petr Svoboda absent due to injuries, Michel Petit (for Coffey) and Karl Dykhuis (for Svoboda) played; Dykhuis, unfortunately, committed a key turnover which led to Federov's first period GWG and the Wings' forward later said of the play "He fell over. I think the ice was funny in that place." Lapointe made it 3-1 with one minute left in the opening period. Detroit led 5-1 after two periods with Brendan Shanahan scoring in the final minute of the middle period. Post-game, Flyers' head coach Terry Murray made his infamous "in a choking situation" comment about his team's play and among the reamrks was "Eric (Lindros, who had two third period minors) is our key player and I need more from him that we saw tonight." June 7, 1997 -- In Game Four of the Stanley Cup Finals, the Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup since 1955 with a 2-1 home victory. Nik Lidstrom scored with 33 seconds left in the opening period and Darren McCarty added a dramatic goal 13 minutes into the second period. Mike Vernon made 26 saves and the only shot to beat him was by Eric Lindros with 15 seconds to play in the third period. Ron Hextall also made 26 saves. The Flyers suffered their first lost while wearing black sweaters (sixth game). Philly fell to 3-17-4 in the last 24 (including playoffs) games in this series.
March 14, 1998 -- The Flyers went 4-for-6 on the PP, Alexandre Daigle (3-0-3) recorded a hat trick and Ron Hextall made 24 saves in Philly's 6-1 home win. Eric Desjardins (0-3-3), Petr Svoboda (0-3-3) and John LeClair (0-3-3) each had three assists. Eight of the 17 points came from defensemen. The Flyers led 4-0 5:06 into the second period with each goal from PPs. Daigle had two PPGs in the opening period. It was the Flyers third game under head coach Roger Neilson. Chris Osgood (22 saves, 28 shots) was replaced by Norm Maracle (2 saves, 2 shots) who made his NHL debut.
October 1, 1998 -- In a preseason game at Detroit, Eric Lindros (2-2-4) factored in each goal and led the Flyers to a 4-2 victory. Lindros increased his point total to nine points in four preseason games. The Flyers scored two SHGs. Earlier in the day, the Red Wings traded Mike Knuble to the Rangers.
March 21, 1999 -- Eric Lindros' goal with 1:53 to play capped a terrific rally in the Flyers' 5-4 home win which ended a team-record 12-game (0-8-4) skid. John LeClair (1-2-3), in his first game after missing the prior four with a hip flexor, set up Lindros' GWG. Detroit led 4-2 with under 14 minutes to play and took that 2-goal lead when Kris Draper scored a SHG during the second part of what was earlier a 5-on-3 Flyers' advantage. It was the first time the Flyers beat Detroit in consecutive games since 1988.
March 28, 1999 -- Wendel Clark's OT goal gave Detroit a 3-2 home victory. The Wings had a 4-0 shot advantage in the extra period. Chris Osgood stopped 23 shots. Keith Jones' third period PPG evened the game 2-2. Vyacheslav Kozlov scored twice for the Red Wings. Detroit led 1-0 after two periods. Mikael Renberg, who had a game-high seven shots, tied the game in the third period 1-1. John Vanbiesbrouck made 27 saves. An apparent tying goal by Rod Brind'Amour was nullified midway through the second period when replays showed John LeClair had his skate in the crease.
September 28, 1999 -- In a preseason game loss 3-0 at Detroit, Eric Desjardins suffered a facial injury and lost nine teeth after being struck by a Kirk Maltby slapshot. Desjardins, who missed the opening game of the regular season, played in 99 of the Flyers 100 regular season and playoff games that season.
October 16, 1999 -- Scotty Bowman coached his 1100th regular-season victory in Detroit's 3-2 home win. The win was Bowman's 1300th including playoffs. Kris Draper and Doug Brown gave Detroit a 2-0 lead but Mark Recchi narrowed the deficit on a SHG. Vyacheslav Kozlov scored a key third period goal to give Detroit a 3-1 lead. Sergei Federov had two assists. Chris Osgood made 19 saves for the win. The Flyers had their worst start to any NHL season, 0-5-1 through six games. John Vanbiesbrouck made 30 saves for the Flyers.

2000-2009:

December 8, 2000 -- Steve Yzerman's (1-2-3) first goal in nearly nine months sparked Detroit to a 5-1 home win. Yzerman, in his third game back to the lineup since returning from knee surgery, gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. Detroit was blanked in the prior two games, suffering consecutive shutouts for the first time in 10 years. Darren McCarty ended the skid when he tied the game 1-1 in the first period. Chris Osgood made 29 saves. Brian Boucher made 27 stops in the loss.
March 31, 2001 -- Kent Manderville snapped a third period scoreless tie and Roman Cechmanek backed Philadelphia's first shutout against Detroit in 61 games, dating to November 13, 1977, with a 1-0 home win. The loss by Detroit was the team's third defeat spanning the last 25 games. The Wings were out-scored in the third period for the first time in twenty games. Manderville, who once went 122 consecutive scoreless games, scored for the second time in the last three games and fourth time in the last month. "I'm just trying to chip in where I can," he said as he played a large role in the absence of injured Keith Primeau.
October 18, 2001 -- Detroit scored twice in the final minute of regulation and rallied for a stunning 3-2 win at home on ESPN. January 11, 2003 -- Roman Cechmanek made 21 saves, including two strong stops on Brendan Shanahan in the third period, a fabulous glove save on Brett Hull in the last minute and a chest save against Sergei Fedorov in the final moments backing Philly to a 3-2 home win. February 29, 2004 -- Robert Lang had three assists in his Detroit debut and the Red Wings scored two PPGs in a 4-2 home win. Steve Yzerman (1-1-2) had the go-ahead goal. Manny Legace made 18 saves. Nicklas Lidstrom played in his 1,000th NHL game. Sean Burke made 23 saves for Philly.
January 12, 2006 -- The Flyers' NHL record-setting 11-game road trip ended with a 6-3 loss at Detroit. Philly totaled 17 points (8-2-1) on the trip. The Red Wings out-scored Philly 5-2 in a span of 13:55 in the third period. The Wings outshot Philly 41-20. The game was tied 1-1 after two periods but Chris Chelios scored a SHG at the 0:15 mark followed by Kirk Maltby's goal 31 seconds later. Dennis Seidenberg made it 3-2 and Simon Gagne (2-1-3) made it 4-3 but both goals were followed by scores from Henrik Zetterberg (2-2-4). Steve Yzerman moved past Gordie Howe for seventh place on the NHL's all-time list with 1,050 on the last goal.
February 12, 2007 -- The Flyers out-scored Detroit 5-0 in the third period en route to a 6-1 win in Philadelphia. The five-goal total was the highest allowed by the Red Wings in any third period since October 9, 1993, when they gave up seven (10-3 loss) at Los Angeles. The five goals came in a span of 10:45, including two by R.J. Umberger. Todd Fedoruk scored the last goal on a breakaway. The go-ahead goal came early in the third period on a 5-on-3 PPG by Peter Forsberg who played in his 100th and last regular season game as a Flyer as he was traded three days later. In Holmgren's interview talking about Hartnell and Lacavalier's injuries he said they're going to call at least one player up from the Phantoms. Hopefully, whether that player's McGinn, Raffl, Akeson, or whoever, they make the most of their opportunity so they can stick with the big club.

I think at some point they're going to get it together and start playing like we hope they will. It's not like we don't have skilled players, the problem is that they're just playing poorly right now. Maybe all it takes is one really solid win over a good team to snap them out of it and gain some confidence.

Luckily they're being given a bit of room for error as far as our division is concerned. Tonight every division rival that was playing lost, including the Pens to the Panthers. Obviously if they don't start playing right soon it won't matter but lets just say best case scenario they start getting it together against the Red Wings, then they're right back in it.

Obviously I'm on the more optimistic side but I really feel like it's only a matter of time before everything works itself out, there's no way this will continue all season.

Also, maybe Lecavelier and Hartnell getting injured could have an upside. Hopefully one of the call-ups looks pretty good and then stay on as a 3rd line player to play with Couturier and Read so Talbot can get back on the 4th line like he belongs. Then with Talbot on the 4th line we can finally get rid of Rosehill. Maybe the young guys getting called up could serve as some kind of spark for the rest of the team.

I have to agree with this. Right now, everything is going wrong. And it's all feeding off each other. Negativity breeds bad luck, and right now, everything is negative. Once just one thing goes right, our fortunes will begin to change.

Giroux is obviously not a 0 point scorer. Once he buries one, things will get easier for him. The first one's just the hardest. Once that flood gate breaks, it will get easier for the rest of the team.

I'm increasingly getting the vibe that they're all just a step off from each other. Once it clicks they'll be fine. They have the talent.

I thought Mez looked pretty good overall last game, aside from a bad penalty at a bad time. There were only a couple times where I was terrified when he had the puck, which is an improvement over constant terror. This obviously means he will get hurt now.

Losing Lecavalier is probably going to be a huge blow.

Now imagine if the offense breaks out against the Red Wings and starts scoring goals. They start to gain confidence, they stop gripping their sticks too tight, they start having fun again, and the offense looks like the offense we know it can be. Now if the offense is back and the defense looks better than last year and Mason is still looking solid, we're suddenly in great shape. Obviously I don't expect Mason to keep these numbers up all year but if he can look about as solid as he has been then I'll be really happy.

I don't know about you guys but I'm still excited for every single game. Watching the Flyers is literally the only thing I look forward to during the week to get through my classes.

What I've liked about Mason is he hasn't looked like his performance has been straining him. He's largely been cool and collected with few mistakes. When he makes mistakes he seeks to prepare for correction. Basically, I don't get the sense that he's playing above himself, he seems to be within his abilities. I also don't expect him to keep this up all year, but I don't expect him to suddenly bottom out based on what I've seen, either.

Exactly. Even when he lets in a soft goal he doesn't seem to let it get to him and he finishes the game really strong.

I know, right? Based on the conditioning we have (quite rightfully, actually) received from CBJ fans about his mental fortitude, I expected a meltdown after a soft goal. It flat out hasn't happened here. Yet.

You know how it goes with most fans. They see what they want to see. A lot of Columbus fans don't like to think of the facts that Mason is still very young and that he has never really been given a chance outside of one very poor Columbus team. That and his few seasons in Columbus represent a relatively small sample size, a sample size that includes a Calder win.

Steve Mason has statistically been one of the worst goalies (if not the worst) in the NHL since that Calder win... which was five years ago. That is not a small sample size, especially considering he even put up terrible numbers last year behind the same team that Bob played well enough to win a Vezina behind.

It's great that he has looked confident in the truly small sample size in Philly, but let's not pretend the criticism he received in Columbus wasn't deserved. His numbers there were awful.
