I don't know why, but everything saad writes annoys me.
Like why the f*** are you adding middle names and making the post longer for no good reason?
Does twitter have some kind of minimum character limit?

I had to think about this for a second, because I feel the same way but it's not like he did anything horrible in that tweet. I think it's because he doesn't seem as dedicated to being a beat writer as some of the other people that have come through here. I get the impression he's just passing through on his way to whatever the next sport he wants to actually cover is.

I think we're relatively spoiled because, while I don't think Shapiro was the king of analysis or anything, the guy was dedicated to covering this team 100%, and put out coverage like crazy, included these big projects during the summer that broke down video of some guys and analyzed players and the team with more depth.

Mostly, I'm disappointed that someone who is not being paid by the Stars to cover the Stars isn't more critical of a team that so clearly deserves it. We already have a Razor and a Heika, we don't need more neutral rhetoric for a team that has been anything but over the last few years.

TLDR; We're paying for a subscription for a specialist hockey beat writer, but they hired a generalist sports guy instead who isn't filling any niche that the rest of our crap coverage isn't giving us.

Yeah Saad’s interest seems to heavily lean towards football and some basketball. His twitter just goes off on those and the Stars content is more or less sounding like bare minimum or ”forced”.

He sucks at his job if were being honest. He's very annoying and knows very little about hockey. I much prefer DeFranks who isn't amazing or anything but he gets the job done.

Yeah, unfollowed him just before I decided not to renew my Athletic subscription because when he'd get going, my Twitter feed was just flooded with basketball, football, and soccer takes more than hockey.

Saad also works part time for the Ticket doing fill in production jobs. My guess is he does this kind of stuff because being the best writer for the Stars barely pays a living wage, which is also why Shapiro eagerly took a new hockey business assignment that certainly pays better.

Boqvist is hurt and not playing tonight, Kukan will play instead.

Statwatching, Gurianov’s start looks underwhelming… how has he looked?

Inconsistent, shuffled around lines, and scored a massive goal in overtime that no one else on this team could even dream of attempting, just Gurianov things.

That's probably fair, now Shapiro shills garbage articles under the guise of following business stuff. The best NHL business coverage is the business of hockey thread here, I don't think I've ever read anything else that felt remotely legitimate.

I wouldn't expect a really good replacement at The Athletic anyway, there have been many rumors of their demise and there have been layoffs in places. Hopefully it's a blip, but we may want to enjoy what is there for now, because I'm afraid a collection of competent writers in one place may only exist for a little while longer. Someone is going to come along, buy them out, and gut the things that make the website good if the financials don't get better.
