When you look at the best top lines around the league, they play about 20 minutes a night. Ours usually plays 15-17. You always hear the terms "roll 4 lines" and "short shifts," but Ruff goes to the extreme with that.

I am by no means a cba authority

but

waive or trade some jokers and bring sceviour to stay---see if he is something for the core long term---time for a big boy tryout

trade goalsagainstki for a bag of pucks right now

let connauton take the minutes and learn

notes on game---from my season ticket seats---it isn't that we sat back the 2nd and 3rd, we just couldn't get it across neutral ice worth a crap---and once near their blue line we pissed down our legs and gave it away like a porn star

I just think its damn hard to get a good dman. To get one worth a damn they would probably have to sell the farm.

Exactly it's so hard to improve the defense. To attempt to get a difference maker it's basically you'd have to take a shot at someone who hasn't progressed as expected or has fallen out of favour with the team's coach like Kulikov, Gardiner or a Del Zotto. The other option is someone blocked from a top four role, but then you might end up with another Goligoski.

Edler if he's really available and if he'd waive his NTC to leave Vancouver for Dallas. Then would also cost arm and leg, this team just needs time to develop. It's not like this team is a legit contender.

Not to mention if there's a good defenseman available there will be like 20 other teams interested.

The problem is that we keep bringing up young defensemen and put them in positions difficult to succeed in. Personally, I think you have to keep taking chances. Zubov had his reputation warts when he came to Dallas but he turned into a major catalyst for this team turning into something legit.

i am ok with reputation warts coming in
and i don't think the #1d of our future has to be younger than benn

he could be 3 or 4 years older than benn

just please find a #1 d

or any d at all!

Its funny you guys are pushing to take a risk on D-men with warts no matter the cost, when that's exactly what Neal for Goligoski was. If it doesn't work we lament how it set the franchise back forever. The point is, you have to be careful with those risks, and that's probably why nothing's happened yet.

If we can get a rental or depth guy who can do more and wants to do more for mid to late picks and lesser prospects it should be done but it is a hard bargain to find.

Yep. It all happened when Norstrom left. Everyone uses Zubov as the reason, but it started the year prior.

To be fair, those two things coincided. Norstrom's last season Zubov played in only 46 games due to injury. The next year only 10. Zubov's time in Dallas ended like a slowly removed bandaid to it's kind of hard to say when he "left" definitively.

Edit: I'm also really uncomfortable putting that much on Norstrom's time in Dallas. He came over as a late season addition in 06-07 and then played 66 games the next season. Boucher's injuries/decline also happened right around that time. He was a big piece of that defense corps.

I'm not saying no matter the cost. I'm saying something needs to be done or our young defensemen are going to keep coming up and being played with a defenseman who is anything but a steady hand. Good begets good, and so forth. This is exactly why I wanted Scuderi and why I would love to push hard to get a guy like him this year.

If I were to nitpick I would say that Goligoski actually wasn't a D-man with warts, he was a guy who was being played like a 4-6th defenseman and put in position to succeed in Pittsburgh. Nieuwendyk gambled on the unknown that he could play top pairing minutes and lost.

Zubov might have only played 10 games, but he would have still been around the team to help by at least talking with the young guys. Yeah it probably it a bit much to say it was just one, but the trio of them.

The team really needs two Scuderi's.

The Quiet Corner
4-2 Islanders, Eakin gives em the puck.

I have been watching the Stars' eastern road trip. While it is great to have you guys in this part of the country it has been difficult to watch.

IMO you have decent goaltending with Lehtonen and good forwards [I really like Jamie Benn & I loved Rich Peverly when he played for us] but your defense needs upgrading badly. I don't know if there are any elite defenders that should be available at your first round draft pick # but if there are I hope you grab one. It might also be time to see what your prospects can do at the position- they might just surprise you. Trading for an elite or even 1 or 2 second level defensemen might cost more than your GM is willing to pay, they are pretty rare these days.

I don't know if there has been any talk of firing Lindy Ruff yet but IMO he shouldn't be, it is just his first season there. He routinely got his Sabres teams to play hard & succeed more often than not [we hated playing them] so I'd give him another year to see what he can do for the Stars.

Look forward to watching the Stars @ Bruins on Thursday :yo:

With the amount of injuries we had on D we were able to give a few of the prospects a look to finish out the end of last year. Doesn't seem like they were ready to impact the lineup in a meaningful way. As frustrating as it is, patience seems to be key.

Weren't ready to make an impact? You mean back when we were winning games? This crap started when we got our supposed 'better' defensemen back.

Remember when Oleksiak was tearing it up and we were all *****ing when he got sent back to Austin?

Yeah, neither does anyone else.

Remember Gaunce, Connauton, and Fortunas were doing better than Daley, Gonchar, and Goligoski? I do.

That's not quite fair. The forwards' play with the puck was night and day compared to then. It's like they came back from the holidays forgetting everything they learned about puck management.
