Surging Penguins host struggling Bruins

Going into a two-game set Monday and Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, a lot has happened for the Penguins and Boston Bruins since they last met.

The Penguins are happy about the changes; the Bruins, not so much.

The Bruins swept two games against Pittsburgh, one in overtime, at home in late January, the third week of the season. Boston since then has seen its play level off, while the Penguins are surging following an extended stretch of inconsistent play.

Pittsburgh, which is 11-2-0 at home, has won five straight games overall and, after sitting below the four-team playoff cutoff in the East Division, has moved three points ahead of the Bruins into third place.

The Penguins are coming off a sweep of two games at Buffalo, including Saturday's 3-0 shutout by backup goaltender Casey DeSmith, and are finally feeling as if their play is representative of the talent they have.

"We've been playing the hockey we want," said winger Jake Guentzel, whose goal opened the scoring Saturday. "It's been a full 60 minutes, and we've been playing simple, just getting pucks in (the offensive zone) and not playing too high-risk."

Defenseman Brian Dumoulin agreed, noting, "We're definitely trending in the right direction."

It's netting results.

"We've put some wins together here, which is great for the players, great for us," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "I think it starts with their consistent compete (level), their consistent intensity, and we're getting contributions throughout our lineup, from our goaltender on out.
"I think that's what it takes to win in this league."

It is likely that Tristan Jarry, who has started 12 of the past 15 games, and DeSmith will split the two games against Boston.

For Boston, goaltender Tuukka Rask has been arguably the team's best player. He is 8-4-2 in 14 starts.
The Bruins led the East early but are 4-6-2 in their past 12 games. They have not stacked together back-to-back wins since a five-game winning streak over the first two weeks of February.

Their 4-0 loss Saturday at home against the New York Rangers emphasized their displeasure with themselves.

"We need to make sure we bring it every night," defenseman Matt Grzelcyk said.

Boston coach Bruce Cassidy, who slammed his dry erase board to the floor of the bench during one of his team's five failed power plays Saturday, could not hide his frustration in his public comments.

"You're not always going to have your A game, but you'd better have your damned B game. We were down the alphabet," Cassidy said.

"You're not going to win every game. No team does. You're not going to always look great. But the effort has to be there in the response."

Boston has a few personnel questions heading into the two-game miniseries at Pittsburgh.

Jake DeBrusk missed Saturday's game after he was put on the COVID-19 protocol list, so his status is unclear. Cassidy said top-line winger Brad Marchand "is playing hurt."

On a brighter note, defenseman Kevan Miller, out since Feb. 18 because of knee pain, is expected to travel to Pittsburgh, although it's not clear whether he will play.

When I was a tyke playing hockey, we often got decals for our helmets for various accomplishments, like hat tricks. When I saw the Pens with PPG on their helmets, I thought it meant 'point per game,' until I realized everyone had one.

Never been to Pittsburgh but the shots of downtown NBC show look great. I like that little cable car that goes up the side of a hill outside downtown.

Goaltending should favor the B's but journeymen Wedgewood and Kinkaid pitched shutouts against them.

Pens playing much better and the B's playing worse than when the teams last met.

Pittsburgh sportscaster says Pens should beat overrated Boston the next 2 nights

I'm not adverse to a little swagger from a local broadcaster. Thing is here, though, the Bruins would have to be rated in order to be over-rated. Is anyone seriously talking them up as an outright top team at the moment?

No, but Pittsburgh may be on a bit of a run right now but I don’t think they are either .

I have no problem watching a rebuilding team lose games. Being able to see young players grow and progress is a joy most fans forget to savor.
However, a lack of effort night in and night out is unacceptable.

This is a playoff team. Yes, this month's schedule is brutal and we are injured. Guys are being overplayed and the team looks tired.
Those may be good reasons. However, they are not an excuse to just roll over.

A solid system and workman-like ethic is all this team needs to get out of the Ides of March still in the playoff race.

At this point all I am demanding of this team is E-F-F-O-R-T .

Another shit show like Saturday is unacceptable.

I can usually forgive a hard fought loss, but the way the standings have shifted so dramatically in the last 2 weeks is worrisome. I agree that in order to win over their fans I think a full throttle 60 min effort is required, but that hard fought loss crap just doesn't cut it now.

I'm greedy. I need a bell to bell W

Give Ahcan a shot on the dee, he can move the puck on the PP. Steen and Blidh on the 4th line is a real pain to play against.

Well on the positive side we only have to survive 30 more regular season games of this year's debacle. Concentrate on next season and look at how to really address the issues and do not to trade for deadline patches for which they overpay. They are not elite and it is time to put your tail between your legs and admit it. Try to positively add to the lineup during the off season and give the aging core a final shot next year.

I am scared what DS may do in a tough situation.

I knew we would get to see the kids play in March with the game fatigue and possible injury minefield it would be. But I did NOT expect to be down to playing a waiver wire defenseman like Tinordi and possibly seeing Ahcan already. Crazy.

Very intrigued by Ahcan. I hope he gets a shot tonight. He's been excellent in the Providence games I've watched. His ability to retrieve the puck and break it out with his skating and passing is much needed on the lower pairings. He's also very creative offensively, could bring some sorely needed pop to the back end if he can translate his game to the higher pace. He is TINY but he doesn't play like it, he's got a bit of Krug in him in that way. I think we're gonna like him.

As others said, just bring some effort tonight. No one on the roster should feel comfortable after Saturday's shitshow.
