The Whalers, being midway between two O6 teams, used to have more Bruins fans than Whale fans for playoff games (aka the annual first round exit courtesy of the B's). No new arena was going to change the fact they didn't have enough fanbase to support the team.

They’ll be fine without Coyle for now. Studnicka is playing well enough to take his place anyway
 
the age of the building has become an issue, among other things in recent years..... much like the Islanders struggles to vacate the Nassau Coliseum for that ill fated shift toward Brooklyn and Barclays.

Karmanos kept waiting on the state to grant him an arena or a replacement for XL, WHICH never happened.....

This is more what I remember. Karmanos said he needed more season ticket sales - and local companies jumped on board. He left anyway...
