I don't really know if I like that 5 on 3 setup but FWIW it is very common in a 5 on 3.

It's frustrating because it's not a scenario that has practice time devoted to it, so the golden opportunity often looks like a mess.
I don't think it's very common. 5 on 3 is all about possession and setting up the perfect shot but the motion is usually/mostly around the perimeter using the points. In this case we had both wingers down below the goal line where they are incapable of taking a shot so other than trying to come up beside the crease we end up playing 3 on 3. If those two are in front and off to the side you move it around but a shot can come from any spot. It was dumb.
