Player evaluations for this game:

Nylander - Mixed bag. Handled the puck well, and seems to have a surprising ability to get takeaways. Did not use teammates well this game, and also got himself into trouble a few times by not making the simple play.

Kessel - Mostly quiet. Uninterested.

JVR - Good, but not as much effort as last game.

Kontiola - Had high hopes for him after what I saw in the WC and Olympics, but he's been a disappointment so far. Always a step behind, made some really odd decisions, had some turnovers that were quite unneccessary. Showed absolutely nothing.

Kadri - Mixed bag. Partially the best leaf, partially the ugly side of his game.

Brown - Invisible. Not getting much out of his game. Nice shootout goal.

Santorelli - Decent. Not showing much, but you can see it's a pretty solid player. He had a great year last year a lot due to really good intensity that he lacked previously, we need to see this for us as well.

Bodie - Didn't show anything of what made him a decent fourth liner last season.

Leivo - A lot of icetime, apparently. That surprised me, because he was not very noticeable anywhere on the ice.

Kozun - Some skill, a lot of hustle, not enough sneakiness or size to be succesful in NHL in my opinion.

McKegg - I like his game. His skating has got better, and he plays with intensity and some skill. It will be interesting to see where he's at after another year in AHL.

Devane - Meh. He was decent for a fourth line enforcer-type. I'd rather be without those though.

Gardiner - Mostly good. Does some gaffs, but the puck tends to move the right way with him on the ice. The SHG was not on him.

Franson - He giveth, and he taketh away. He's a PP specialist, and he shows why. Great creativity, shot and passing to create offense, but also awful decision-making. This is especially noticeable at the offensive blueline, and way too often it results in goals against.

Loov - Not good. Didn't handle the puck well, out of position a few times, and struggled through the game.

Granberg - Meh. Skating so-so, puck-handling bad. Good defensively, but not as effective as I had hoped he would be in a game like this.

Mikkelson - Double-meh. Not showing anything of interest.

Percy - Can be solid, calm and with a good pass, but he got walked and outmatched some in this game. Not encouraging.

Reimer - Shaky at first, solid as he got warmed up. Did good.

Gibson - Not looking good this game either. I think Bibeau might get past him in the depth charts this pre-season. Actually I think he already might be.

No one really making a case to make the team, or take jobs away from the vets.

as exciting as it is that you never know what Leafs team you have in the third period - it would be nice if this team would know how to shut it down in the third. (sigh). pre-season or not...:shakehead

From the comments it simply looked like you didn't watch half the game  Wow, that's a lot of unnoticeable players. I think once again it's just the defense that broke down like all of the time last year, though if Reimer was in net we probably would have won.

I don't know why Carlyle says they didn't listen. Seems like they have the system down pat.
Get outshot but lead the game only to lose it in the 3rd period. Whats the problem? :)

Most of the loser DNA in the organization that has plagued the team is still there. It's preseason, but the way the team lost tonight was pretty textbook and I'm pretty sure won't be the last time we blow a 2 goal lead in the third.

Its shaky defence guys.

Most of our defence is big, but clumsy -- Granberg, Loov, Franson, Mikkeslon.

Percy is solid, but just simply a bit too slow.

We need defence that can SKATE.

If they don't start the season well and are getting outshot with a under 500 record the first 20 games, Carlyle is as good as gone. We have a decent bottom 6 that can play this year, I don't see a reason to end up bottom 10. We should be making the playoffs this year

I really believe that the leaf defence is a product of Randy Carlyle. Too much emphasis on pinching and not enough on defensive coverage. Which is why we lost this game tonight.

to be fair, gibson was crap...however it did feel like a typical leaf game from 13-14. I never wanted to keep carlyle, but until Shanny can find the guy he wants, he's staying unfortunately.

Granberg and Loov look pretty mediocre out there. I hope it's just preseason rust and not another case of Korbinian Holzer, who received a lot of in house hype, but has turned out to be an NHL pylon.

Franson is just too much of an oddity. Huge body who doesn't use his physicality, great wingspan but no nobility, great shot, great outlet passes but pretty poor sense. The Leafs defense would be so much better if they had that Seidenberg/Timonen IQ dimension to stabilize things.

Percy looked decent, though kind of weak and his skating just lacks any kind of explosiveness. Not that exciting either. Mikkelson is irrelevant.

Lol... Everybody just relax. I get that this game was disturbingly reminiscent to the way the team played during the epic collapse last season but it is just preseason. Everyone is still trying to find their legs and the Ottawa team had a lot more to play for than this Leafs squad that was mostly comprised of legit NHL players. Interesting to not that Komarov was not playing and the team looked really flat. He may be the straw that stirs the drink

Yeah, Gibson was terrible, but you shouldn't need goaltending against the Binghamton Senators or whatever they're called.

I think you're right for the most part: it is just preseason, but with the loser-y loosey goosey culture hardcoded into the Leafs culture by now, it's hard to tell if they have an ON switch as a team.
