Just a reminder that Montreal used a 3rd overall pick on him, passing on:

Rielly
Lindholm
Trouba
Forsberg
Wilson
Hertl
TT
Ghost
Parayko
etc.

I just wanted to savour that for a moment after a tough day.
Most GMs at the time would have likely made the same pick.
That said, using guys selected in deeper rounds is a bad argument because you can say that about all 30 GMs that they missed those boats

A former Penguin who brings 0 grit, 0 defense, and a modest amount of offense? And he's paid too much?! This sounds like the "top 6" forward Jason Botterill has been waiting for.

Is that how Sheary's been playing? That's a bit surprising. He had his warts while he was a Pen -- namely falling over for no apparent reason or puck handling as though the puck were a rubber ball -- but playing with a bit of grit/intensity wasn't usually one of them.

I remember watching him for a few weeks after we got him and thinking, what am I missing? He's got a decent shot and that's it. Doesn't play with size or speed. Definitely not good defensively. Hurt a lot. Can't see any team sinking a lot of money or term into him.
Yeah it's been the same except for the decent shot part.

I can also see nino/galchenyuk as a possibility, nice thread op. Very curious to see if either player gets traded and where they end up.

When Penguins' injury woes end, Galchenyuk destined for trade block - Sportsnet.ca

This isn't too surprising, despite Galchenyuk producing about in line with what kind of player he is (40-50 point powerplay specialist), he has just not meshed with the Penguins for whatever reason and Sullivan fairly isn't a fan. I expect he'll go in a swap for another struggling winger, and if it's similar to the Perron for Hagelin and Hagelin for Pearson trades, it will probably be someone with term. Just off the top of my head, Galchenyuk for Niederreiter is an example of something in that mold.
The 2012 draft is turning into one of worst ever.

I don't think he will even get a contract next season. If he does it will be the 800k type or a PTO. I've watched him and he is absolutely invisible on most of his shifts.

I realize this was probably a salary dump (Kessel), combined with Kessel/Malkin issues for Rutherford, but unless this dman they got works out I feel like they could have gotten more for Kessel.

Moving him now will be for a pick or another struggling, soon to be out of the NHL, type player.

Yeah, we could have gotten more, but Kessel blocked the Minnesota trade. From Zucker to this, huge downgrade. Hope POJ works for us.

Galchenyuk hasn't been a fit anywhere he's gone. Can't imagine teams will be lining up to give up any sort of value.

He seems destined to end up somewhere like Seattle. Maybe they can surround him with other misfits and Vegas him into a serviceable player

The 2012 draft is turning into one of worst ever.

Ive thought that for a while. I remember bloward Burkie saying that "we would have taken Reilly with the first pick overall if we had it" and rolling my eyes.

I wanted Chucky. And then Grigorenko was seen as a small step below so I wanted him as well.

I wasn't thrilled with the Reilly choice, after what just happened with Luke Schenn I wanted some offence with a top 5 pick.
Glad Im not the GM.

Reilly is having an off year but up until now he was the best of the top 5, well, actually I guess he still is.

Yohe and Friedman have no idea what Pittsburgh are planning to do with Galchenyuk .

I'm pretty sure Galch's reason for not fitting in has to do with his helicopter dad..

If he cuts that cord, I am positive this kid could hit a few 80+ point seasons.
