When Penguins' injury woes end, Galchenyuk destined for trade block - Sportsnet.ca

This isn't too surprising, despite Galchenyuk producing about in line with what kind of player he is (40-50 point powerplay specialist), he has just not meshed with the Penguins for whatever reason and Sullivan fairly isn't a fan. I expect he'll go in a swap for another struggling winger, and if it's similar to the Perron for Hagelin and Hagelin for Pearson trades, it will probably be someone with term. Just off the top of my head, Galchenyuk for Niederreiter is an example of something in that mold.

I'm not saying you're wrong, and I know we've sort of had a history of these types of trades but why in the hell would we be taking salary back (Nino 2x 5.25) for a pending UFA?

Why not dump him for a pick or whatever the hell and then retool that spot in FA? I realize you'll likely pay more in UFA so that could be an argument

Because JR has done that exact kind of trade 3 times with the Hagelin-Perron, Pearson-Hagelin and Brassard/Sheahan-McCann/Bjugstad trades. He makes those kinds of moves all of the time, it's completely logical to say that this time will be similar.

has galchenyuk really been that bad my god..

He hasn't been "that bad", he's just not a great fit for the Penguins. He's still on pace for around 40 points while not getting much ice time, but he doesn't mesh with the style of play that the Penguins have and Sullivan doesn't like him. The Penguins are super deep at forward and they have a bunch of younger guys really excelling, that plus Galchenyuk not meshing well with the team is a bad combination for Galchenyuk.

There are zero teams that would trade a 1st for Athanasiou as he's on pace for like 40 points and a -93
im taking back a bad contract thats costing pitt while adding a world class speedster just waiting to be fed great break away passes by sid and malks . aa needs a good passing team to utilize his speed

1. Galchenyuk does not have a "bad contract", he's a rental.
2. You can't demand a return based on what Athanasiou could potentially do on another team, that's not how trade value works.

You're not going to convince a single Penguins fan to say yes with this attempt.

That’s a weird thing to call Gagner but whatever I guess. ;)

the reality is it would take a fair bit of finagling on our part.

Gagner:
1.98 p/60 5 on 5
60% on-ice xG

Galchenyuk:
1.68 p/60 5 on 5
46.9% on-ice xG

I've seen Gagner be thrown around as a cap dump for Edmonton on HF today. The truth is, he's been really good for the Oilers this season. I don't think Holland should be moving him. If cap needs to go out, find other players to move or have them retain salary. Gagner is an asset to a team with a desperate need for secondary scoring.
