Effort was fine other than the glaring breakdowns in transition defense. Four days off does them no favors as they get rusty awful quick. Sort of a rough game for HHA and his first couple steps defending transition. Phillips also isn't ready for big boy hockey. Definitely ready to see what Miro can offer. Overall a fine systeming team effort but one lacking finish or great puck control leading up to deadly sequences. Killer instinct is definitely still a problem. And the PP still isn't dangerous. It is what it is. They're a not a high impact sort of team these days. If they don't get great goaltending it's going to be a challenge most nights.

I can't get over Carlson being that ragged a month into the season. It's a clear statement he's going to need his minutes dialed back. Yet they can't afford it without stronger efforts from Jensen and more offensive production across the board.

Conclusively nothing, he was not helpful or noticeable all game. Won a handful of pucks, lost a handful of others by being tiny.

If the eye test didn't work he'd be scoring and we'd all go "I don't know how he did it but he kept us in the game", but he didn't and isn't regularly.

He's leading the team in 5v5 scoring this year on a per 60 basis. He's also leading the team in 5v5 expected goal share. He also has the same number of 5v5 points as Tom Wilson, John Carlson, and Dylan Strome. He's only behind Ovechkin in total 5v5 points (by 1 point).

It's tough to trust eye tests when "he gets knocked off the puck easily" is enough to conclude a guy isn't an NHLer. Also apparently Beck Malenstyn is an NHLer according to the eye test because...??? Wild opinions ITT!

Gonna have to get used to getting shut out by backup goalies this year
They've been shutout twice. This game and Jarry in game 1. So no.
I hear what you are saying but scoring talent is a real thing. When we had oodles of it we would have one of the highest shooting percentages in the league and could sleepwalk through games and still win. This team can’t finish and until players like CMM, Oshie, Wilson find a way to score when they should this will continue.
Even Ovie's shots aren't going in right now. It's teamwide. Yes they need more talent, but there's still plenty of scorers on this team; the force just isn't with them.

What is the plan? I haven’t heard one from this franchise yet other then get Ovi the record which ain’t happening anytime soon with this roster.

The plan is not trading away 1st round picks, not trading for veterans. Ovy can get the record without getting more veterans. Hell he can break the record as a PP specialist. Maybe trade DK for playoff teams desperate for a goalie with playoff experience if totally out of it at the TDL. I always read, "Gettiing Ovi the record" as we're in a rebuild mode. I don't expect management over the last two decades to ever fully disclose.

I actually think BMac is a straight shooter. If they were rebuilding or retooling he would say it

He's leading the team in 5v5 scoring this year.
That's the only place he plays and he's only got three points, two in one game. Doesn't make him MVP, and frankly based on bounces there are a number of guys who could have overtaken him tonight.

We have a lot of hockey left. Maybe start a poll on how many times the Caps get Shutout this year lol. November and December usually good months to see where teams stand.

No one in the east is beating VGK or COL this year.
Oh thanks for informing us on that. I didn't realize teams don't have to finish the regular season and play in the playoffs to find that out!

Actually no. How teams play at the start of next year is more indicative of where teams are.

Twabby, take those fancy advanced metric stats and shove it up your butt end!
Hey, now. No reason to be rude. Shove it up your butt end, PLEASE.

Also, don't listen to this person, twabby. I want to see more of that ugly blue persian carpet stat. It describes exactly how I feel about this team.

I don't think he's the MVP I'm just saying it is absolutely wild that people are concluding he isn't an NHLer because he gets pushed off the puck easier than most others?

They need to figure out this scoring thing.

I'd rather see Miro than Phillips. Phillips not doing much for me.

Most of us are.

Not always. 2019 Blues broke that trend.

It's because he's not a top line talent.

Like... if Phillips were another Gaudreau (when Gaudreau was doing anything) or even a Zuccarello we wouldn't be talking about this, but he's missing too much in his game to function and be helpful when things aren't going absolutely right.

In a game where the bounces don't come, like this one, he becomes pretty marginal even when he's making good plays and most of his good plays tonight were just getting McMichael the puck. The name of the game becomes "play big and let's push one in" and he can't do that. I didn't see him as a visibly impactful player, did you? A touch here or there, but again, mitigated by the situations he loses in stature and strength.

We're past grind lines, the NHL "meta" still requires a third "scoring line", but they can't be where you're putting guys who can't do anything else. This is one of those moments where I'd like to see what goes into that formula because McMichael carried the play on that line by a lot. Good touches to a better player are good decisions, but they don't make you an NHLer.

Hell even if he was a Perrault that would be great. He does absolutely nothing out there.
