The Toledo Mud Hens proudly select the best pitcher ever Hall of Famer SP Walter "The Big Train" Johnson.

2 x MVP, 3 x Triple Crown, 5 x ERA title, and World Series Champ.

WAR 165.2
Wins 417
ERA 2.17
Games 802
Starts 666
Saves 34
Innings Pitched 5914.1
Strikeouts 3509
WHIP 1.061

"Addie Joss could not have been more right when he predicted “That young fellow is another Cy Young. I never saw a kid with more than he displayed. Of course, he is still green, but when he has a little experience he should be one of the greatest pitchers that ever broke into the game. He has terrific speed and a motion which does not put much strain on his arm and this will all improve as he goes along”." Walter Johnson
"Babe vs. Big Train: In 107 at bats, Babe hit .280 with 8 doubles, 2 triples and 7 home runs. He walked 19 times giving Babe an on base percentage of .389, and Ole Walter punched him out 25 times. Not bad, but let’s take a closer look. Babe hit .342 lifetime but Johnson held him 62 points under his lifetime mark. In his career, his home run to at bat ratio was 1 homer in every 11.76 at bats; against Johnson he hit a homer in every 15.29 at bats. Babe whiffed 1 in every 6.43 at bats but when he faced the Big Train, he went down swinging once every 4.28 at bats. Babe’s numbers against Johnson were pretty damn good however, in essence, the Big Train reduced the Sultan of Swat to a mere mortal.

However, there is a flip side. Throughout Johnson’s career, opponents hit .222 against him. He surrendered a total of, ready for this, 97 home runs. THAT’S IT!! That translates to a home run every 227.2 batters! The on base percentage of opposing batters throughout Johnson’s career was .281. So, if you consider that Babe took him deep once every 15.29 at bats and hit him at a .280 clip and got on base 39% of the time then one could conclude that Babe reduced the great Big Train Walter Johnson to a mere mortal as well."

WHEN THE GREATS FACED THE GREATS…..

With the 4th pick in the ATD draft, the Rocket City Trash Pandas select SP Robert "Lefty" Grove
1-lefty2.jpg

upload_2019-1-7_20-48-18.png

Lefty is possibly the premier pitcher in the history of the game and certainly the best lefty in the history of the game. Lead the league in ERA a mind boggling 9 times, strikeouts 7 times, wins 4 times, FIP 8 times, WHIP 5, and K/BB 8 times. His .680 winning percentage is the best among 300 game winners. All while his home parks were hitter's parks and he didn't debut until his was 25 years of age.

Can't go wrong with one of the unheralded aces of the game anchoring my staff.

With pick #6.........The Lookouts are happy to select.....C Josh Gibson

JoshAtForbes002.jpg

The Lookouts are happy to get one of the greatest power hitters of all time, and at the difficult position of catcher, this pick becomes a no brainer.

In the segregated, white only MLB at the time, you had Babe Ruth as the greatest power hitter, and in the Negro leagues you had Josh Gibson as the undisputed greatest power hitter.

The Sporting News, baseball’s written authority for decades, credited Gibson in 1967 with hitting a 580-foot home run in Yankee Stadium. The ball landed two feet from the top of the bleacher wall.
“Josh was a better power hitter than Babe Ruth, Ted Williams or anybody else I’ve ever seen,” said former Cleveland Buckeye pitcher and manager xxxx xxxxx. “Anything he touched was hit hard. He could power outside pitches to right field. Shortstops would move to left field when Josh came to the plate.”

with pick #13, the Lookouts are pleased to select, SS Honus Wagner

WagnerHonus_009.jpg

21 seasons

"At shortstop there is only one candidate, the immortal Honus Wagner. He was just head and shoulders above anyone else in that position. Fellows like xxxxxxxxx and xxxxxx were all great fielders. But Honus could more than out-field all of them. He was perhaps the greatest right-handed hitter of all time. He had remarkably long arms, hams for hands, and just drew the ball to him. xxxxxxx once told me he could have been as good in any position but he made his greatest name as shortstop. He led the National League seven times at bat and he was always up with the leaders when he was in his forties."
-Babe Ruth

-Bill James cites Wagner's 1908 season as the greatest single season for any player in baseball history. He notes that the league ERA of 2.35 was the lowest of the dead ball era and about half of the ERAs of modern baseball. Since Wagner hit .354 with 109 RBI in an environment when half as many runs were scored as today, he asks, "if you had a Gold Glove shortstop, like Wagner, who drove in 218 runs, what would he be worth?"
-Bill James, renowned baseball historian

"Acknowledging that there may have been one or two whose talents were greater, there is no one who has ever played the game that I would be more anxious to have on a baseball team."
-Historian / Author Bill James in The Biographical Encyclopedia

I'm going to deviate from my original plan...

With my 2nd pick of the ATD, the Rocket City Trash Pandas select 2B Rogers Hornsby

At this point in the draft I can't ignore the best right handed hitter in the history of the game and unmatched power at the keystone.

.358/.434/.577 with a 175 OPS+ are video game numbers for a second baseman. His B-R age is just littered with Black Ink and if Silver Sluggers were a thing in his day he would easily have no less than 13 (most likely 15 or 16).

The Toledo Mud Hens proudly select the 3rd best lefty ever Hall of Famer SP Sandy Koufax.

"When Sandy Koufax was awarded a basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati in 1953, his plans included a career in architecture. Instead, Koufax made a living on a baseball diamond, becoming one of the most dominating left-handers of all time. "Either he throws the fastest ball I've ever seen, or I'm going blind,” said Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn." Sandy Koufax

The Toledo Mud Hens proudly select the 3rd best MLB righty ever Hall of Famer SP Tom Seaver.

"Hall of Famer Hank Aaron said Tom Seaver was “the toughest pitcher I’ve ever faced.” In an ESPN poll, Hall of Famers Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Jim Palmer, Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, Bert Blyleven, and Don Sutton all said Tom Seaver was the best pitcher of their generation.
From 1967-1977, “The Franchise” was selected to 10 All-Star teams, lead the league in strikeouts five times, put together five 20 win seasons, threw five one-hitters and won three Cy Young Awards. Hall of Famer Sparky Anderson, who managed Seaver with the Cincinnati Reds in 1977 and ‘78, recalled, “My idea of managing is giving the ball to Tom Seaver and sitting down and watching him work.”
Tom Seaver no-hit the Cardinals in 1978 and in 1981 became the fifth player in history to record 3,000 strike-outs. In 1985, he returned to New York as a member of the Chicago White Sox and won his 300th major league game at Yankee Stadium." Tom Seaver

Well, looks like I'm going with another deviation from my master plan...

With our 3rd pick in the ATD, the Rocket City Trash Pandas are honored to select 1B Lou Gehrig
image

upload_2019-1-10_8-17-20.png

Before being forced to retire due to ALS, Gehrig compiled some of the most prestigious power numbers ever while also hitting a lofty .340 and only once striking out more than he walked (his first full season 46 BB to 49 K). In his Triple Crown season he put up a slash line of .363/.465/.706 and finished 5th in the voting.

Another video game slash line to add to my line up:

.340/.447/.632 with a 179 OPS+
Which rank all-time- 17th, 5th, 3rd, 4th

3 time Home Run Leader
5 time OBP Leader

And he turned it on even more in the post season posting a .361/.483/.731 line in 150 postseason PAs.
