I know it sounds crazy but I really really really want Semin if we can get him and still grab Martin/green. Semin's a possession monster and is one of the few players in the league that can go toe to toe with Datsyuk in skill and creativity. With h we wouldn't have to play a guy like helm/abdelkader in the top six.

Hes not bottom pairing on this team, And hes not bottom pairing on many other teams easily.

Theres no head and shoulders clear cut person ahead of Franson. Green and martin MIGHT be better. I think that Franson also fits better into this team better then Martin and Green

I just don't get it, why should KH go after Paul Martin? Don't get me wrong, i really think he's a great defenseman. But with XO and marchenko just waiting for their chance to shine, both of them can become better than what Paul Martin will be in a year or 2.
I'm not saying go after Green like no tomorrow, but he's a kind of defenseman that can't found within the system and brings another dimension to the line-up. He could easily improve the production level resulting in more goals for guys like tatar and goose.
But going after any defenseman without trading one of smith/Q/ Ericsson seems odd to me. XO and marchenko deserve a spot and they need it for their development.

Fair enough. I have Green and Martin about three full body lengths of heads and shoulders ahead of Franson but maybe that's just me. Personally Franson is one of the last guys I want to sign tomorrow. He makes Smith look like a god defensively.

Well, our D SUCKS! I hope Holland would do some trades, but I don't think he'll do any. Because Smith is re-signed, I think it's now certain that it's either Ouellet or Marchenko who will be in the team. I want them both.

Franson is going to get a long-term deal north of 5m a year. That isn't the kind of player I want Holland investing in long-term. He'll be the defense version of Weiss.

You realize Franson won't help our defense right? He'll be a waste of space.
The only way our defense gets better is Holland doing a LEGITIMATE TRADE and actually rebuilding our d-core.
Not by signing mediocre defensemen from the FA market.
The only FA I would touch is Green, and I'm not even a huge fan, but because he's a RH shot who's a PP specialist.
I want semin on one or two years.
Green on four or five years.
If we can't do one of those then go for kessel of Toronto will indeed eat 2m a year on his contract.
But like every off-season. Holland will bruise his toe with some tire kicking and call it a day.

i want hodgson on a 1 year deal with andersson traded away for a draft pick

Hodgson is junk. He's not good enough to displace the 28 forwards ahead of him on the depth list. He would just be adding more clutter.

Gimme Semin with a 1-2 year deal and Green with 5-6 year deal and I'll be happy. In reality, I think we'll get neither.

I would like us to sign Semin to a 1-2 year deal (would be okay with up to 3.5 mil AAV).
Then make a trade for a top 2 defense-man:
Helm
Mantha/Pulks/Jurco
XO/Sproul
Quincy/Smith/Kindle

Some of you people seem to forget that we don't have unlimited cap space. I predict Nyquist will get 4-4.5, Jurco 1.25-1.75, Pulks around 1 mil and Ferraro 800-900 AAV. This means we will have 6-7.5 mil to sign someone. I think there's no way we're going to sign TWO FAs.
If we can't sign Semin or get a bargain/fair deal for a defense-man I want us to stay put. See how our defense fare under Blash (hopefully he will find a way to get Big E off of the top pairing!) and then maybe make a trade later on.
