For an owner that never give up 1$ upfront, that's a huge blow.

Exactly.

We sit here in our armchairs throwing millions around, but just the interest on 21M$ is significant.

Aho signed this deal... that means it was far away from what he was getting from Carolina in the first place.

For sure, but honestly. Losing your profits for one year is better than losing them for the next 5 because they are rebuilding again.

Even from a business standpoint, Aho will sell tickets.

If you own a company and can't afford to lose money for a year or two on what is a good investment for your company mid term then i don't know what to say. You just not a good businessman.

If Canes could walk away with a few 1sts maybe they save face a bit. This the Canes cannot accept and have to match.

So we are out of any big money UFA signings, which is probably good.

Need to trade for a LHD. This Aho attempt is a side show for me, we need the D man to play with Weber, thats the need.
A first line franchise center is and always has been the big need

For this fan Marc if you were really serious you offer 10.5m x 5 instead with huge bonuses. This isn't enough to get this done IMO but kudos for trying.
The whole purpose was to try and build an offer to push them to the bring and think about it while Bergevin didn’t have to give up more than 1 x 1st round pick along with the other picks.

Everyone acting like he just whipped this together.

This was well thought out.

Not mortgaging the teams future with 4 first rounders, Carolina will have to dump a lot of money in bonuses, which they probably will but they will sit down and think before matching.

It’s all smart moves by Bergevin and applaud him for it.

He’s damned if he does damned if he doesn’t.

For everyone saying it’s been getting boring each year, he had the balls to actually offer sheet someone which no harming the future of the team.

He’s a n considered an idiot when the numbers were released. Give the guy the matching time and then see what his next moves are if matched. Just be glad he is actually trying to make this team better while not gutting the future.

In his presser, MB saying he called Waddell this morning. Evidently, gave him a heads up.

I gotta go for a walk. This is driving me nuts. I think it was a very very bad decision to offer so little.

Has only negative consequences.

MB was asked that several times but he says it wouldn't have made a difference.

They identified a vulnerability within the Canes and exploited it. And extra 2 Million would not have mattered, it's the front load aspect that is the poison pill not the salary paid out.

Waddel reaction is very childish. If any gm loses respect it should be him for his remarks post offer sheet.

Yes but if the deal had been at 50m instead of 42 it could have been front loaded even more.

The compensation is the real thing though. Waddell might be able to go home happy with 2 1sts, a 2nd a third.

Not so much with a first, second and third.

Edit: Hard to imagine your spa visit was relaxing once you heard about Aho

As per Bergevin he made the same offer to Jordie Benn in April that he signed in Vancouver.

He's damned only if he misses the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 years next season. Something no other GMs of this team has ever accomplished. Not even Houle.

Can’t neglect the NMC and NTC on the contract. So will Carolina really dish out 21M for a player who will leave in free agency at 25 years old and get nothing in return (unless he waives), while (supposedly, basing this off nothing) putting their team in an immediate cash flow problem? Dundon probably took on some debt when acquiring his equity stake in the Canes. Who knows if he may have any financial covenants in those that may impede him here in matching. Another widget thats interesting in this contract by the Habs

It was a terrific offer and I'm proud of Bergy for doing it

Was asked about adding a D, just said "right now, we're still looking." So, I guess they're not looking at Gardiner cause he's right there staring them in the face.
Offer sheet could put pressure on other teams to deal for fear of being offer sheeted themselves. Aho sheet has dual purpose.

You get the player this is the biggest win in nhl history. You don’t you set a new precedent so other teams need to pay their players.

I wonder if our RFA poaching ways will actually make pending RFAs wait a week to see if Montreal will give them an offer sheet.

I think it's more than that….since the rumors are true, they try to put a trade together but didn't worked out.
There was rumors about it all day long, seems to not have worked out and they pull the trigger.

The Habs established that the Canes are the most vulnerable franchise and acted accordingly.

They saw how Dundon made a claim in the bankruptcy of the pro football league he had been bankrolling. And how he had to get a margin of credit further to the league failing.

And then, knowing how precarious the Canes's finances are, they settled on them as the target.
