I am hoping that the Rangers do something so hilariously stupid like signing a 32 year old Kadri to an 8 mil x 8 year contract. Dude legit had a career year, won a cup and will expectedly regress very soon with the mileage he's put on his body.

As a GM, you shouldn't pay a premium for rental or short-term players, but moves like signing a guy exiting his prime to a bad contract can kill a franchise even more.

Should we really be hoping that Kadri sets the market at 8x8?

That directly will effect what Horvat will be asking for and will possibly scare of some teams that will want to trade and extend for Miller as Miller will surely have a higher AAV than Kadri.

He's listed as a C but he's been a full-time winger for his entire NHL career.

He's a solid, physical low-event defensive bottom-6 winger. Kind of like Dickinson. If you could sign him for in the neighborhood of $1.2 million, sure. Start paying a bottom-6 winger more than that, and it's a case of Benning-itis.

Was that because he's bad at faceoffs? Vaguely recall seeing something about Blueger being the center on that line much the way that Pettersson was the "center" for Miller, except that it was that way because ZAR is terrible at faceoffs. But have never watched enough Pens games to verify that.

Maybe that's part of the play - if they get Kadri, they go "all-in" on Miller at 50% and finally part with Schneider and Kakko?? And we take Chytil and send them Hog to make the cap work?

they have 9 forwards and 6 defensemen right now, so they need at least 5 more players, which doesn't work

they would need to move out one or two of chytil/lindgren/nemeth to even consider having enough money to sign laf and ka miller's next deals

kakko makes sense to be moved, schnider still has two ELC years left

Like the Islander smoke screen that threatens the Rangers. The Kadri one threatens us.

You know Drury wants his guy and it makes the most sense cap wise and age wise to get JT but he's being stubborn and good for him but the numbers are not good if he decides to lay it out for Kadri.

I can't see a scenario where the trade significant assets for Miller if he's a rental. There's almost no situation where they can sign Miller long term and Kadri as well.

Yeah, me neither, tbh. Gotta think signing Kadri takes them out of it completely - that's even more reason to hold onto Schneider on his ELC for this year and next.

But, daring to dream lol.

That's what the market will be set at. Ridiculously stupid contracts are about to be handed out this window - and many of which will be buyout worthy in 3-4 years.

In the past we have signed/traded for a lot of fringe guys mostly just because they are from BC. Petan, Juulsen, Hunt, and Burroughs most recently.

Maybe that was more an issue from the past management group though and Allvin knows better? We will find out during this free agency period.

This was an unsettling interview. Sounds like nothing is happening and they are seriously considering holding.

They overplayed their hand, they have no choice but to hold now if they cant move him this week then they arent trading him until Trade Deadline which is a massive massive gamble.

we would be risking a JT Miller injury or a down year that would both significantly lower his return.

You guys are being over dramatic. The last guy was a moron who was a complete open book. The new guys actually have tact and know how to work the media.

You could always take Benning at face value. He didn't know how to operate any other way. JR & PA are playing it cool in the press and probably working up a storm behind the scenes.

JR basically said they think teams that miss out on their top free agent options will likely circle back… plan b, c, d etc. that they still intend to clear up cap space it just won’t be beginning of free agency like they originally hoped.

Perhaps was insinuating miller… maybe myers or garland?

Post traumatic Benning disorder is real.

Like JR said…If you want to do a deal bad..It will be a bad deal..

Forcing the issue and being desperate is the wrong road.

Signing Kadri takes the Rangers out of Miller UFA sweepstakes completely and that hurts Miller as much as the canucks. Gaudreau to Philly does the same.

Miller might have to open up to more options, NYI looks better and NYI might be more desperate.

is the media cooperating with him though? they are reporting on the number of times JT takes a longer breath. leave the situation alone and let the guy do his job fcs.

Over reporting is so stupid, everytime there is news (non news), its reaffirming to the other 31 GMs that no one is inquiring, the media is dousing water on the market for him. Thats the worst thing you can do when someone is fishing for the best deal, asking him every 2 minutes if there's a bite.

They reportedly turned down 1st chytil and lundqvist and havent received anywhere near that right now.

Fiala only got a 1st and Faber. Miller isnt going to get much more than that if he even does.

Now the market is filled with guys like Malkin, Gaudreau, Kadri, Copp, Kane, Towes, etc...

cap spaces are about to be taken up, Miller will probably be traded as a rental rather than a team trying to extend him then trading for him...

Only way i can see the Canucks salvaging this is if they retain 50% otherwise they missed their boat on value for Miller and now might have to go into a very very risky season and situation of JT Miller in a final year of contract.
