I guess Florida did this to clear cap space? Feels like the small level of sacrifice was worth it as a show of good faith from Drury to the NYR players for the wins we've been getting.

I have no idea how Valtrano plays though. Anyone want to give a rundown on the type of player he is? Does he hit?

One rumor says this brings Giroux to Florida, like they're not loaded enough on offense.

Pirri was a PP specialist. Vatrano's numbers are pretty favorable 5v5.
I also like what I read from some Florida fans who said Vatrano has a good motor and level of effort. The words were something like "gives 110% 90% of the time."

I don't think anyone has accused Pirri of having a good motor, or any functioning motor at all. I'm sure Vatrano isn't going to come in and immediately fix our bottom 6, but it definitely feels like we added an element to it that was completely missing.

Vatty will not displace Hunt from top 6 or McKegg from the lineup. Book it. Both are made guys to Gallant. Only Kakko will provide any sort of threat of displacing Hunt, which would domino the fourth line placements.
Hahaha. We trade for one Italian guy and the team is a mob crew. Haha.

Good post from the Trade Forum on him from a Panthers fan. Copied and pasted below...

"Depending on how you count it, Vatrano was the fifth longest tenured Panther. Huberdeau, Barkov, Ekblad, and Weegar came before him, and Tippett/Mamin both debuted as Panthers in Fall 2017 (Vatrano was acquired around the 2017-18 deadline), both of those guys went back to their development teams for several years before coming back. Vatrano has been part of the roster for a full four years.

I'll give my NY bros a scouting report:

Pros
  • Great straight-line speed
  • Gives 110% like 90% of the time
  • Physical along the boards
  • Absolute rifle of a snap shot and slap shot
  • Has a long stick and poke-checks the point-man well
  • Is effective on both the LW/RW
  • Is an overtime beast (at least in 3v3)
  • Teammates adored him
Cons
  • Some of the worst tunnel vision I've ever seen
  • Can't complete a pass
  • Makes his linemates worse
  • If he isn't scoring, he's doing absolutely nothing
  • Can be careless and is prone to stick penalties
The Skinny
  • Frank is the quintessential north-south player. He's fast, he's physical, and he can snipe with the best of them. When he's on a hot streak, you can plug him in as the third wheel in any of the eight wing spots. When he's not hot, he's still a useful fourth liner with significant finishing capabilities and is a good option for the PP2 and 3v3 OT. Unfortunately, his inability to compliment his linemates and his proclivity for penalties means that this guy who can produce like a middle 6er really belongs on the fourth line with the energy players."
How about his hands? Any skill?

Edit: Oh sorry. Didn’t realize it was a quote.

I hope this move pushes Hunt to a more appropriate bottom six role and gets McKegg out of the regular lineup. (maybe he rotates with Reaves). Both are fine players and good guys but they’re too one-dimensional.

I like this trade template. What other all-in teams need to shed short term salary? Colorado? Toronto? Tampa or Vegas maybe?
Like your wording. We can easily rape a few of those for their "extras" that would upgrade our bottom 6, while they're going for the gold.
Dammit, I keep thinking about how Kravtsov really screwed this all up. Having him throughout the year, would have given us a much better "view" on what to do, having our top 6 all set and ready to go.
Getting a top 6 at this point would be a minor miracle AND costly.

Very solid move by the leagues worst GM. He could be slotted in for Hunt on the Panarin line, but the way theyve been going recently I think GG will be hesitant to break them up. I really like the look of a Vatrano-Chytil-Goodrow 3rd line. 2 North/South guys who can skate with Chytil. Now that Hertl/Miller arent options, I think the next order of business should be to acquire a D-Man like Giordano or Lindholm for a 2nd rounder and a prospect. After that's done, sit tight until the deadline and see what opportunities present themselves; I still would keep my eye on Lehkonen or Hagel as an affordable guy for the middle six who we can control beyond this year.
Thats where you need to end sentence with a sarcasm emoji. Trust me, thats one of my faves to use, and keeps you a little safer, while getting your point across accurately.

I have a feeling he will be tried with Bread and Strome, after like 3 games keeping Hunt there

And it will either be a f***ing magical marriage of the 3 or an absolute trainwreck and he'll be moved back down quickly. The north-south tpye of game may actually work with those two.

He doesnt have to make them better. Accept passes from Bread and Strome and snipe, which is one of his strengths.
Pretty sure that would be the thinking involved. Imagine Panarin with someone capable of putting the puck in the net when given Strome's gimme's.

love this move. exact kind of player we needed and at a very favorable cost.

like RB said, very telling that we were linked to literally everyone but absolutely no one picked up on this until it happened.

I still think they need at least one more forward. I know it won't happen but maybe even 2 to boot Reaves from the lineup. He's really just not useful rn and there's no reason to believe he will be.
