Seems like a decent fallback plan if Fleury/Bean aren't ready to make the next step.

forsling's acquisition was one of the stranger ones to me in regards to finding the appropriate opportunity for him. we did a lot of work ungunking the pipeline in charlotte by making some tough decisions regarding poturalski, roy, saarela, brown, and renouf moving on. this seems like a crowded situation to have 3 guys competing for that final left defense slot. it makes me curious if they have already somewhat resigned themselves to the idea that bean will be starting in the ahl again and that forsling and fleury will be the main competition.

Forsling in a way reminds me of TVR. People were high on him, then soured on a little bit when he was given more minutes and his development stagnated. Maybe the FO was thinking they could duplicate the success they had with TVR with him. They're much different players style-wise, or so I've read, but the overall situation seems similar.

Or maybe he's just somebody decent to play major minutes in Charlotte and be on the short list for calling up to the Canes when they need a body.

I think Forsling is a guy that the management knew had the most experience but could still get on a two way deal. He could add some good depth and have enough experience to be a solid mentor to Bean, potentially Sellgren later.

I kinda think that Forsling may have more of an inside track to the 3rd pair LD or #7 spot than Fleury or Bean based on his experience alone. I also don’t think the 2-way piece really matters that much. If he goes on waivers after not making the team out of camp, I’d imagine he’s claimed pretty quickly due to his age, salary and untapped potential, same as Fleury. Bean may be back in the AHL due to being the only waiver exempt guy.

I think this is the right read, and I’m very OK with this approach. It’s one thing to throw a Fleury type defenseman in there a little too soon, where he might not move the needle at either end of the ice. But putting a Jack Bean defenseman out there too soon could get really ugly. A bit of competition gives us insurance, and it also puts Bean in a position where his A+ game is the only path to an NHL spot. That should help him developmentally more than if we fed him minutes at this stage.

Based on how this team operated last year, I believe that the Canes will play the player that gives them the best chance to win in the #6D spot, contracts/waiver status be damned. If that is Bean, so be it. For the #7 slot though, I don't think they'll use Bean in a spot like that. Much better for his development to be in Charlotte getting top minutes vs. sitting in the press box more than half the time so I see him either as #6 or back in Charlotte.

RE: Fosling. I don't think the Canes are overly worried about losing him via waivers if Bean were to earn the #6 spot. The CDH deal was about getting rid of his salary, and the Canes continue to (and will continue to) stock the cupboards with depth so that losing a guy like him to waivers is pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

These are the scenarios I see (once TVR is healthy).
Option 1: Bean earns #6 spot, one of Fleury/Forsling takes the #7 spot, the other gets traded or waived to go to the AHL.
Option 2: Fleury or Forsling earns the #6 spot, the other gets the #7 spot, Bean goes to the AHL.

The CDH deal was about getting rid of his salary,
This makes the most sense. Not sure if Forsberg or Forsling makes much of a difference in the Canes mid-range plans. Both offer some insurance for the big team and some experience in Charlotte.

"So I get to play with Pesce, right?"

I think a Forsling-Pesce pairing would be interesting, based on what I’ve read about Forsling and his skating ability/style of play. The only way that pair becomes a reality though is by TVR not being ready for at the start of the season and by Forsling having the camp of his life.

So which guy didn't accept their QOs?

Maenalanen, Carrick, McKeown, Fleury?

McGinn and Forsberg to arbitration (unless signed before it gets there).

Am I missing anyone?

Yeah, I agree with you that I don't see much of a chance of that happening.

"Hey Brett, we know you got mad and wanted a trade last year because you were on the bottom pairing so we fixed that by putting you on the LH side with Faulk and moving CDH in the offseason. We have a deal for you though, how about we put you with Forsling on the bottom pairing to start the season?"

There was nothing wrong with Fleury last year. The problem was with Rod being completely unwilling to pivot his game plan when necessary, even in the case of injury. Rod needs to grow just as much as a coach than Fleury/Bean do as players if any young defenseman wants a shot on this roster.

You (Slavin) get to play with Pesce.
You (Faulk) get to play with Pesce.
You (Fleury) get to play with Pesce.
You (Forsling) get to play with Pesce.
You (Bean) get to play with Pesce.

EVERYBODY GETS A PESCE!

Except Dougie. Dougie only gets to play with Slavin.

But wait. If Slavin gets to play with Pesce, but Hamilton only gets to play with Slavin, then what happens to Hamilton when Pesce plays with Slavin?

Given Fleury's 1-way deal, I think it's pretty clear that unless Forsling tears up camp, the battle will be between Bean and Fleury for #6. Forsling feels like the default # 7.

And I agree that they won't keep Bean in Raleigh to be the #7. He needs to continue to play big minutes if he's not in the NHL.
