At least MacEwen is younger and comes with more upside than Brown.

I'm okay with them picking up some free bottom-6 talent while Alison and Laczynski or both hurt longterm. It's not like Bunny or Rubtsov made a case for themselves in camp.
The players waived now are mostly those who came closest to making an NHL roster and worth a longer look.

He is big, physical, good skater for his size, good hands.

Complete pain in the ass for opposing goalies and will drop the gloves 6-7 times a year.

Defensively is a work in progress (although not terrible). Also takes some dumb penalties a times.

Canucks fans seem to be unhappy with this and the way he was used there. Apparently their staff tried to get him to be a goon but the fans think he had the skill to be something better.

Unfortunately I assume he’ll be here for the same kind of anti-offense toughness/goonery, so even if there’s a tiny chance of him being an actual hockey player, he’ll never become that with this staff.

My new favourite word

Someone here does a lot of defending of all these 14th forward options for a position they've repeatedly said doesn't matter since they won't play much anyway.

More refuting some stupid things that have been said.

And they won't play much, Frost will be back in early November (unless he's as big a flop as Patrick, in which case we'll have the satisfaction of knowing Hextall will deep six the Pens so we can share the cellar), Hayes mid-November, Allison by January.

Frost will move Brassard to 4LW, Hayes will move Laughton to 4C, Allison will move someone to the press box.

I don't like having rookies on the 4th line unless they come into the league with really good defensive skills, PK ability, maybe some size, etc. Guys like Mike Richards, Couturier, etc. Absolutely stupid to put a guy like Frost on the 4th line, so I don't care about grabbing guys like MacEwen.

Now Frost on the 2nd or 3rd line - sure.

Brown will probably be waived down to LHV in a few weeks, if Vegas then reclaims him, opens up a contract slot, if not, he'd be a solid addition to the Phantoms.
MacEwen will probably get a shot at showing he should stick long-term.

These are low cost moves that are incremental upgrades over Bunnaman, Rubtsov, Sushko, etc.
Willman was about the only Phantom I think can play on the 4th line right now, even Cates is a ???

Been refreshing and stood out when the rest of the 4th line (since NAK left) treats the puck like a grenade and throw it randomly out of zone and virtually never even try a controlled entry.

Now? Is he going to be a "good" 4th liner? Or even average? Jury is still out.

But there are some encouraging signs that has it in him if has an NHL quality C I think.

MacEwen has more upside than NAK in that he has a skill that are harder to find, size and the willingness to go to the net - that's been a killer for the Flyers since Simmonds left town. The Flyers have tried to scheme around it, but how often do you see unscreened shots from the outside or the point easily handled by opposing goalies?

Doesn't mean he'll work out in that role, just that it's a rare quality in the NHL these days, but with the change in the cross checking rules, easier to park in front of the net. And a big guy in front of the goalie can cause havoc, just ask Hart.

Otherwise, while he's not as fast as NAK, he's fast enough to be effective on the forecheck, plays a physical game and has some modicum of skill. Certainly worth auditioning until Allison returns.

Apart from the Flyers system does not have a dedicated net-front guy. That has been the case since AV took over with a 2-3 OZ system. So you wont really see it ever apart from on rebounds where the closest guy will swarm in. Because the wingers are supposed to be up nearer circles rotating to get a mismatch on the D. And only go in closer when puck goes down low. And still not "proper" NF.

And they could have easily had NAK and MacEwen on a line with a decent C!

AV is currently working to beat that out of him, in practice.

But the next HC might need one. :sarcasm:

He's been a great pickup. It's not his fault he's had to play with the bin juice so far.

Having a bottom line of Lindblom, Mac and Bunny is infinitely better than having those plugs Brown and Thompson

Unfortunately, Bunnaman has regressed into a younger version of Thompson.

They are both zero-event players that are just trying to survive their shifts without getting scored on. Bunny showed some promise a few seasons ago, but like so many other players since AV took over, he gradually got worse.

Not sure you can blame AV for that, he has really bad hands.
I mean Seattle took Twarynski over him. Nuff said.
