Player can choose term. So if he takes a 1 year term isn’t he just a UFA after this season? Or does he need another year before he reaches UFA? If it’s next year the Flames not only just put a one year lifespan on their best player, but they also demolished his trade value by making him a rental.

He was guaranteed a 1 year term. You don't get UFA years in arbitration. The only risk here is if he gets an early date, you might get a week to negotiate before he gets a 1 year contract straight to UFA. With the new CBA, you can no longer sign a deal after the hearing starts. First hearing should be in a week.

If a player is a year out from ufa then the award can only be 1 year. If he was 2 years out he would have a choice of 1 or 2 years.

He will be signed for 1 year.
otherwise, Tkachuk can decide to not sign until January

This doesn't make sense, if he doesn't sign it benefits the Flames more than Tkachuk. It pushes back his UFA year, why would he have leverage there?

The offer sheet wasn’t a concern. Anything less than a four-1sts level pact would be matched, and nobody can afford to lose their next four 1sts for any player, never mind Matthew Tkachuk.

It sets a deadline.

If Matthew can’t decide if he wants the $80M or whatever they’re going to offer him by his arbitration date, he doesn’t want to be here, and they can trade him.

If he does, great. Glad to have him.

Irrelevant, whether Matthew filed for arbitration or the club did the max term the arbitration could give was 1 year since this is his final year of restricted free agency.

It’s pretty well known Tkachuk is either going to go to St. Louis or Ottawa. Hockey is going the way of the NBA. There is very little loyalty from players to their team or their fans. It is what it is. Just a sign of the times. Same with PLD is going to go to the Habs as soon as he is able be it trade or free agency.

Can you elaborate on this?
If Tkachuk was that deadset on getting out of Calgary, and he was willing to hold out until January, couldn't he also just refuse to the sign the arbitrator's number? What would be the consequences if a team agreed to the number but the player still refused to sign?
