I hope he plays for you guys.

He really peaked at the tournament, it's too bad we couldn't have gotten more for him when we sold high.

I still think he can become a decent 2nd pairing D although time is running out for him. If he doesn’t solidify himself as an NHLer this year, my guess is he goes back to Europe for a couple years and maybe tries his luck at making the NHL again if he has some good seasons there.

Had to bump. One of the better waiver pick ups in years in the league.

Funny reading in here too that Q destroyed his development in Chicago while in Florida he was the man who helped him turn it around

He's been a great two-way dman, with great wheels for us

76 games
6 goals
30 assists
36 points
+37

Since Panthers picked him up

Q’s doesn’t (didn’t) develop players. He wants ready to go. Forsling wasn’t ready the 1st time.

Chicago and Carolina would probably regret punting him also
Those other teams at least had him in their organization playing for them. So they saw him up close and worked directly with him.

Carolina had Fleury and Bean their own first rounders that they wanted to see in the NHL but ultimately moved off both of them last season.

Forsling wasn’t NHL ready when he arrived in Chicago and needed time in the A but I believe that I read that his deal contained a provision that he get some NHL action if he came over from Sweden. Something to that effect.

Yeah, he probably has 100 “3rd” assists, as he often starts the play that ends in a goal with a nice outlet pass or by carrying it into the zone himself.

* “100” used solely for illustrative purposes ;)

zito in one year signed him, gudas, traded for montour, re-signed weegar to a sweet-heart deal. oh and acquired Nutivarra who is another serviceable dman that has been hurt.

then consider signing carter v, duclair, trading matheson for hornqvist, acquiring sam reinhart and bennett. easy gm of the year imo.

You would think. I was pretty surprised they didn't give Zito GM of the year last year. Instead it was Lou who didn't make many good moves last year.

Surprised Carolina never used him when they had him. Organizational bias towards "their own guys" the case here, as Fleury and Bean got all the chances, while Forsling never did.

Maybe a little bit of a bias, but both Fleury and Bean were also gone within months. In Fleury’s case they probably would have held onto him if they could, because he was already a solid player, but someone had to be the guy to go in the expansion draft. Bean’s clock had run out and his bust status solidified by this time.

For Forsling, it was just a numbers game like any other. This transaction took place in January because that was the beginning of the COVID season. At this point in his development he was 24 and not playing like a guy who was certain to end up as a regular NHL’er. Carolina didn’t have Forsling in the opening night lineup, so they tried to sneak him through waivers, and Florida picked him up essentially as a spare part. The big jump in his development had perhaps quietly started, but as you can see in this thread nobody was thinking he would have this huge breakout. Especially with the disruption of the prior season, with the AHL having not played games since March.

I always hated the Canucks trading Forsling, felt like they had found something there in the late rounds... turns out they did but then immediately moved him for 'win now' help the second he started showing value.

One of the best waiver claims I can remember in awhile.

Funny enough the Canucks did put Jacob Markstrom on waivers at one point but no one took him, could've been another I suppose. Alas what a move this has turned into for Florida. Great player.

I always hated the Canucks trading Forsling,

the profile of Forsling wasn't anything.

hes not a super offensive guy, so not a top pairing dman,
he's not a shutdown guy either, so not a shutdown dman or defensive dman, nope
he's not big for a dman, nope, not one of those guys,
he's not a fighter either, nope, not a tough guy,
he's a smaller guy, ok, one of those guys, but not a offensive guy, so hes one of those sterero typical guys that might not fit the NHL at all, if anything if you see what i mean.

bug happy he found his way in the NHL.

it was more of the guy never looked special while here. He didn’t do anything particularly well. He didn’t do anything particularly bad either. He didn’t blow anyone away with his AHL time either. I wanted him to get a couple of games because i thought he looked better in preseason games but that is just likely a dumb fan liking the backup QB kind of a thing. Seeing how frustrated Rod and Co were with fleury, i highly doubt it was an our guy bias. Especially when that group didn’t draft either guy.

I have long since forgiven them... since two other teams gave up on him. Realistically, even if they didn't trade him, his career trajectory would have led to a waiver claim anyway. Not much can be done about that, some players really do just figure it out too late to be kept, or blossom after a change of scenery...
