I remember a stretch where Peters was putting up respectable numbers because everyone collapsed in front of him all game long. I want to say that was Muller's last season? Don't really remember.

I think you're right. They didn't win many of those games but they weren't giving up anything.

I have to wonder how much of it has to do with Lack's inability to play the puck. He caused a couple loooong hemmed in sequences last night by not making a great play behind the net. Ward has absolutely improved in that regard and is pretty good with the puck (the last goal he gave up notwithstanding)

I know it's kind of a captain obvious comment, but this kind of puts it in perspective. In every year except 2007/8, the team with the worst goal differential has ended up dead last in the NHL...so 9 out of 10 years. Makes sense. Only exception was 07/08 where the Tampa had a -44 but finished at the bottom even with ATL at -56. Excluding the shortened season, Carolina has been at -38, -23, -30, -3, -26, +13, +3, -12, +34 over this stretch.

Right now, almost 1/3rd of the way through the season, the Canes are at -24 with only Calgary worse at -30 (who is also the only team with worse goaltending than the Canes). The next closest team to Carolina is Philly at -18 and CLB at -17. I realize this is nothing new given the sorry state of goaltending and goal scoring for this team, but do you think this will keep up and the Canes end up 29th or 30th? Or do you think they'll go on another 2nd half run and be in the 23rd-25th spot? I guess a lot of it depends on what happens at the TDL.

yep, I still feel like this the next morning.

If Staal actually gives any kinds of ****s about this team he'll pull a Tkachuk after we cash in on him at the deadline.

Or he could do what's best for him since it's his life. But you know, whatever.

Or he could do what's best for him since it's his life. But you know, whatever.

You clearly missed the conditional. Easy mistake. Let's walk the pseudocode:

IF: (Staal actually gives any kinds of ****s about this team)

THEN: (He'll pull a Tkachuk after we cash in on him at the deadline.)

ELSE: (He could do what's best for him since it's his life. But you know, whatever.)

Your clause is only triggered when the antecedent is false.

Our construction, then, is logically valid, since it's clear to me that Eric stopped giving any kinds of ****s about this team a couple of seasons ago.

If I recall though (maybe I'm misremembering), 2 years ago the team played pretty well in front of Khudobin and even Peters. It seemed like they were working harder in front of Peters because they knew he sucked.

this is true.

i'm not defending lack at this point, but he's obviously a better goalie than what he's showing, which is objectively terrible right now. but again, it's seven or eight games. evaluating a goalie based on that amount of performance is beyond nonsensical.

if you want to be obtuse and throw out two seasons of data where he was solid and vancouver and choose to see him for what he's been here, fine, but that's just ****ing dumb.

but yes, i agree that lack can't just be handed the starting job because ward has been horrible for years now. he has to at some point actually go out and be better than ward. i still think he'll do it, but last night was a setback.

edit: none of this after the first sentence was directed at you, BBA. just my thoughts in general.

Lack was never good goalie to start with it, so that's not big surprise. He's not fit for us because we are beyond pathetic team. It's time to move on Staals. Jordan is my favourite player though.

Turning this team around isn't going to be easy. We need to really use about all our resources and think outside the box. Is there furniture at PNC arena we could sell? Do any of the players have useful non-hockey skills? Any chance of changing the objective of fhe sport of hockey? C'mon folks, we need something fresh here.

Thinking outside the box. Hmm.

A collective reading of an adaptation of Waiting For Godot, called Waiting for Goalie, in which different characters are voiced by different sections of the crowd. The part of Ronnie will be played by everyone in Section 328; Rod, Section 333; others by random shouting through megaphones.

* * * * *

Ronnie, sitting on a bench, is trying to take off his skate. He pulls at it with both hands, panting.

He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again.

As before.

Enter Rod.

RONNIE:
(giving up again). Nothing to be done.

ROD:
(advancing with short, stiff strides, legs wide apart). I'm beginning to come round to that opinion. All my life I've tried to put it from me, saying Rod, be reasonable, you haven't yet tried everything. And I resumed the struggle. (He broods, musing on the struggle. Turning to Ronnie.) So there you are again.

RONNIE:
Am I?

ROD:
I'm glad to see you back. I thought you were gone forever.

RONNIE:
Me too.

ROD:
Together again at last! We'll have to celebrate this. But how? (He reflects.) Get up till I embrace you.

RONNIE:
(irritably). Not now, not now.

ROD:
(hurt, coldly). May one inquire where His Highness spent the night?

RONNIE:
In a sports bar.

ROD:
(admiringly). A sports bar! Where?

RONNIE:
(without gesture). Over there.

ROD:
And they didn't beat you?

RONNIE:
Beat me? Certainly they beat me.

ROD:
The same lot as usual?

RONNIE:
The same? I don't know.

* * * * *

Later:

RONNIE:
Charming spot. (He turns, advances to front, halts facing auditorium.) Inspiring prospects. (He turns to ROD.) Let's go.

ROD:
We can't.

RONNIE:
Why not?

ROD:
We're waiting for a goalie.

RONNIE:
(despairingly). Ah! (Pause.) You're sure it was here?

ROD:
What?

RONNIE:
That we were to wait.

ROD:
He said by the fax machine.

* * * * *

Still later:

RONNIE:
A—. What are you insinuating? That we've come to the wrong place?

ROD:
He should be here.

RONNIE:
He didn't say for sure he'd come.

ROD:
And if he doesn't come?

RONNIE:
We'll come back tomorrow.

ROD:
And then the day after tomorrow.

RONNIE:
Possibly.

ROD:
And so on.

RONNIE:
The point is—

ROD:
Until he comes.

RONNIE:
You're merciless.

ROD:
We came here yesterday.

RONNIE:
Ah no, there you're mistaken.

ROD:
What did we do yesterday?

RONNIE:
What did we do yesterday?

ROD:
Yes.

RONNIE:
Why . . . (Angrily.) Nothing is certain when you're about.

ROD:
In my opinion we were here.

RONNIE:
(looking round). You recognize the place?

ROD:
I didn't say that.

RONNIE:
Well?

ROD:
That makes no difference.

In other news, Hank has a lot of time on his hands

Says the guy with almost 27,000 posts. :sarcasm:  I think that line might qualify as me living in a glass house and throwing stones though.

If only the Canes put in as much effort as Hank did in that post.

I'm still surprised Eric threw a hit.

That's what's so frustrating. He does that on occasion (like he did against his brother also) but 99% of the time, he just waives his stick at a guy. I'm not expecting him to be like Tom Wilson or Dustin Brown and if he hits like that all the time, he'd likely get injured more, but still, he's a big enough guy that can afford to be more physical from time to time.

Maybe some of the players are playing badly in hopes of being scratched to avoid embarrassment.

He did that cause at end of 2nd period he got tripped by accident by NJ #18 and his pride got hurt. So he actually tried in the 3rd cause he was mad. Funny how when he tries and has a chip on his shoulder he stands out and makes a bit of a difference.
