Barry Lyndon is so good, it's hard to put into words. Great choice. Some of my other favs that haven't been mentioned:

The Driver
MASH
Solaris
Stalker
Walkabout
High Plains Drifter
Paper Moon
The Long Goodbye
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Taxi Driver
The Bad News Bears
The Kentucky Fried Movie
Animal House
Alien

And I actually prefer the original Apocalypse Now. The Redux footage doesn't add much, certainly not enough to justify an additional 45 minutes.

I'm not a big fan of 70s films, at least the ones that received critical acclaim. They were so bleak and cynical, no doubt largely because of Vietnam, Watergate and the worsening U.S. economy. I am rather fond of several of the lighter fair, though, such as Star Wars, Jaws, Alien, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein, The Outlaw Josey Wales and so on... basically, the films that helped people escape from the problems of the 70s.

Animal House & Stripes

Stripes is a favorite of mine, too, but it was 1981.

Cromwell, Rocky, The Godfather I & II, and Star Wars are my favorites from the ‘70s.

Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw at a movie theater.

I missed Taxi Driver. Definitely, in my top 25. So...The Last Picture Show gets bumped to HM.

Just saw Animal House last year and what an awful movie (though I'll admit it had some fun bits). Maybe it was funny in the 70s or 80s if you were a teen or something I dunno.
