I'm terrible at lists, I've watched a ton of great films from that era but the one that popped immediately into my head is The Killing of a Chinese Bookie by John Cassavetes. It's such a great film. Mean Streets was amazing as well. Harold and Maude. Woody Allen had a fantastic run in the first half of that decade, particularly with Bananas and Love and Death. A Woman Under the Influence. A Clockwork Orange.

Would you pay to go and see it in the movies today or would the general public? Would that studio even produce that type of movie today?
Well normally I prefer stuff from back then because you could get away with more stuff (pre political correctness) look at Blazing Saddles that movie wouldn't be made today.

understood but my point was that what's shocking or entertaining to one generation is nothing to those in the future.

Elvis shaking hips was a obscene once upon a time.

In no particular order, I'll go with:

Spirit of the Beehive
Stalker
The Mirror
Chinatown
The Ascent (Shepitko)
Suspiria
Aguirre
3 Women
Don't Look Now
Walkabout
Siberiade
The Passenger
Annie Hall
The Desert of the Tartars
Autumn Marathon (Daneliya)
Hedgehog in the Fog
Scenes from a Marriage
The Red Circle
Alien
King Lear (Kozintsev)
Days of Heaven
The Hourglass Sanatorium (Has)
Debut (Panfilov)
Murder by Death (it's stupid but I love it)
Rock and Roll High School (kidding, but this brings me to 25)

I like Tarko and Roeg a lot. The Passenger is my second favorite Antonioni after Red Desert.

I also have a real affection for Rankin and Bass's The Hobbit. I don't even like the book, but I love old cartoons like this.

I opened this and the "Favorite buddy film" thread in tabs and thought that I was reading the latter. I was really confused by some of the film titles that the few of you listed. For example, I was like "How in the world is Death Wish a buddy film?" :biglaugh:

Slapshot, Blazing Saddles (that movie wouldn't be made today), Star Wars and Animal House.
Slapshot wouldn't be made today either, for similar reasons. See, for instance, how Dunlop insults the team owner's young son as he's leaving her house. Great movie, though :)
