Here are the top-100 NHL prospects today. Top-25 by position below

Criteria: Each player had to be under-25, selected in an NHL draft (or signed by NHL club) and played less than 1/2 season at NHL level.

Positions: Keep in mind that some of the positions change (ie, C to wing, RW to LW). I had to pick one for the positional lists, so don't kill me on that.

Methodology: I use a 0-100 scale to rate players. It is largely based on combination of factors, mostly on (a) highest peak potential and (b) probability of player reaching that potential. The probability score is based on age, current league, injury history, current team depth chart. This can impact goalie ratings significantly, so keep in mind when looking at goalie lists. Here is a loose run-down of ratings and how many players are in each category:

95+ (generational) 1 player
90-94 (NHL stars) 11 players
85-89 (1st line, top-pair D) 16 players
80-84 (top-6 F, top-4 D) 31 players
75-79 (mid-6, bot-4) 36 players
70-74 (NHL roster) 55 players

In total, I have 505 players ranked between 51-100 that fall under 'prospect' criteria (I will spare you the whole list).

Feedback: Always appreciated. If you say 'player x over player y', please tell me why. If you have questions, ask below. If you have pithy insults, post below (but be sure to include your full name, address, phone number).

Notes: Here are a couple of notes on the lists...
(1) If we knew that Kaprizov were to play in NHL next season, he would be #2 on this list between Hughes and Kakko.
(2) Sorokin is the top-rated goalie, but benefits from few ahead of him on depth chart. If NYI re-signs Lehner for more than 1-year, he will slide down slightly.
(3) There are a few older prospects (if you consider 23-24 to be old). They are mostly goalies and/or college players. Being 23 years old and stuck in AHL for a few years is not the same as being 23 and coming out of college. Example: Taro Hirose (#75) is ranked a lot higher than Jeremy Bracco (#181). Bracco's probability ceiling has shrunk with opportunity while Hirose's is more unknown. I like Bracco and wouldn't be shocked if he turned out to be the better player. But since his projected peak is much more range-bound, Hirose ends up higher here.

Ok, to the list....

What is your reason for not having Tyler Benson as one of the best 25 LWers?

He had 66 points in 68 games in his rookie AHL season.

He should be in the top 5 for LW prospects, that’s a glaring omission.

6 Flyers in your top 70...7 in your 100.

A Flyers in the top 12 at every position. That's a nice balance

I do think you missed Goalie Samuel Ersson:
.922 SV%, 2.23 GAA in WJC
.933 SV%, 1.95 GAA in Allsvenskan

He received the Rookie of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, and Most Valuable Player of the Year this year in Allsvenskan. He absolutely is a top 25 goalie prospect.

Thanks - will have to keep an eye on this kid.
Ersson is currently #37 on my list, and projects to be a #3.
Goalies are tough and are often so dependent on opportunity.

You've got a weird hate for Kirby Dach
(or others have weird love for Kirby Dach)

But honestly, I probably overrate skating ability and am often too size-agnostic. Compared to others I generally am more bullish on faster, skilled small players and more bearish on slower big bodies.

Goalies are tough for sure. But being named goalie of the year....AND player of the year of a Men`s league at age 19, is pretty impressive.

I expect next year in the SHL he will take a few months to get adjusted, then post better numbers as the season goes on.

Thanks for posting, as a Wild fan I enjoyed reading this a lot. What makes you slightly higher on Kaprizov than most though? Where do you think Boldy should’ve been drafted?

Pretty much always like that..

Caufield was top 8 for most people, but now since the Habs drafted him he is worth nothing.
I am a believer in Caulfield. But he is tricky, because if he doesn't fulfill his potential as top-line scorer, the default wouldn't be 3rd/4th line grinder, it would be AHL.

Goalies are tough - the 8-22 goalies are close if you gave them each the same opportunity.

Don't give attention to someone answering like that. It is quite disrespectful to react this way to a list containing 120 names+

A lot of work goes into your lists and I think they are all reasonable.

Habs fans like Primeau and have good reasons for that, but he doesn't have the draft status of the top goalies (which may not mean much in the long run, but in the short term mean that professional scouts see a lot of potential in the player or not) or the professional experience of some goalies above him.

I think the goalies around him are quality prospects as well. I hope he turns out better than many above him, but who knows what the future holds.

Good work.

Kaprizov has had 3 of the 7 best under-22 seasons in KHL, keeps getting better. Sky is limit for him.

I had expected Boldy at #10 to VAN, so #12 was about right where I expected him. (Speaking of MIN, Guskov was one of my favorite picks at #149...I am much higher on him than most).

This list has so many bad rankings. Carter Hart as the 5th best goalie prospects, Dach at 48, Necas at 4. It’s no good.

I have absolutely no respect for this list. I know that you put in time and effort to make it but it’s utterly ridiculous.
Other than MTL prospects, which do you find utterly ridiculous?

And FWIW, I am quite high on MTL prospect pool as a group. It is quite deep. I just don't see that top, elite prospect in their system at any position.
