According to Nick Kypreos:

- the Toronto Maple Leafs found out that 2 or 3 teams might have been willing to offer David Kämpf $2.5 million per year

- there is a 10 team no-trade clause in David Kämpf's contract

- if Pontus Holmberg can hold down the 3C spot eventually, then the Toronto Maple Leafs might be able to trade David Kampf in the future

You are better then a sports sight. Lol. I get every tidbit

I think he's worth the contract. The problem is they are not really in the position to pay a 4th liner that much $$$. So personally don't like it.
I don't think 4th liner should be paid more than 2mil. He will get this contract from other teams but Leafs don't need him or a 2.4mil 4C who kills penalty. It is stupid. Some compare this to Calle's contract but Calle is not a 4th liner and can play on the 1st line if needed.

If you look at what they paid Kerfoot, $3.5 million, and Kampf on his current deal at $1.5 million it means they had their 3C and 4C locked in for $5 million. Which now leaves $2.6 million for another 3C-4C hybrid. Which isn't great...

So the money would have to be carved out of somewhere else if they wanted a better 3C. Is Jarnkrok expendable?

Kampf being 7th in ice time among forwards is a bad thing. You want your 3rd line C to be more than a 7 goal scorer.

He's a defensive specialist 4th line C with no offensive acumen. You should be able to pluck those guys in free agency for 1-2m.

Kampf being 7th in ice time is fine. Different roles need to be filled. Your best defensive forward is going to play more than your 5th best offensive forward…

Kampf is 1000% more valuable than Jarnkrok.

He leads the PK. He takes all the worst ice time and handles it well. He takes all the key defensive faceoffs. Kampf took 351 faceoffs on the PK this year. Any guess on the next guy? Calle Jarnkrok with 26. Kampf took 691 defensive zone faceoffs this year. Tavares took 310.

Four more years of Kämpf

Treliving explains Wednesday’s re-signing of Kämpf as twofold.

First, the staff likes the player.

“He’s shown he can take on big minutes and play against anybody,” said coach Sheldon Keefe, who is comfortable using Kämpf as a third-line centre until more depth is signed.

Second, Kämpf plays a premier position.

Consider the short list of fellow pending UFA centremen who averaged 15 minutes a night:

J.T. Compher and O’Reilly may cost double Kämpf’s rate or more. Max Domi and Evan Rodrigues are gunning for raises and are often better suited to the wing. Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci are staring at the Bruins or retirement. Jonathan Toews’ health is in question. Nick Bjugstad may re-sign in Edmonton. And Nick Bonino is 35.

That’s the whole list.

“You look right now at the market. To try to find centres is difficult,” Treliving said. “We felt it's a manageable number. His age [28], where he can play in the lineup. Over the course of the last two years, he's played a lot of a lot of time in that 3C spot. I think there's some versatility to him.

“We found a deal that was able to work, and we did the deal.”

Kämpf’s deal also includes an eyebrow-raising 10-team no-trade list.

I don't think the Leafs are sold on there being a 3C we can bring in to afford having a clear cut 4C making that money (Blueger, Nosek, Eller). So instead they went with the hybrid option and now they can afford to go after a lower end 3C.

A little high but he has a center which is a bit thin out there and can PK and face offs so more value than other 4th liners.

Not worth having a cow over 10 team NTC it really means nothing.

Even Kampf getting modified NMCs...LOL, this league
While this isn't necessarily about Kampf, the alternative to having fewer NTCs and NMCs in the league might very well involve an increase in pay to the players (which might very well just lead to placing a new wrinkle on the same sort of dilemma).

I don’t have a problem with a list of teams you can trade someone too.
In the last 5 years, how often have we traded with all 31 teams?
Imagine if Tavares had a 10 team list right now. Would that be a problem?

Agreed,

10 teamers mean little and if it gets the cap hit down a bit I am fine with them.

NTC/NMC have value so they can be offered as a substitute for a higher salary. When many teams have cap concerns it makes sense that you would see a lot more of these in contracts.

That’s the reason why they won’t win in playoffs.
They are not even trying to build a proper balance team.

Not really many guys available to do it right now either.

Unless we get Duchene or ROR of course, but how much is that going to cost?

Here is the thing.
We don’t know how much Duchene and ROR will cost but Rojo cost 4mil.
Unless someone like paying Acciari more than Kampf, I don’t see how Acciari is not a better option than Kampf at this point.
Having Acciari and Lafferty as your forth line is a lot better than Kampf and Lafferty on your 4th line.

Signed schenn instead of reeves if the rumors are true
Accuri I would sign as well

I don't believe we will sign ROR Schenn or Accuri

Soucy sounds like he is signing in Vancouver
