Expectations for the rest of this season under Jacques Martin

In 95/96, Jacques Martin was hired 44 games into the season. Here are the splits for that year:

First 44 games (pre-Jacques):
8-35-1 (0.193 pts%)
Offence: 26 shots for per game, 2.27 goals for per game
Defence: 32 shots against per game, 4.09 goals against per game

Last 38 games (post-Jacques):
10-24-4 (0.315 pts%)
Offense: 27 shots for per game, 2.39 goals per game
Defense: 29 shots against per game, 2.9 goals against per game

He took a team that couldn't score or defend and turned it into a team that couldn't score but could defend, in short order.

What can he do with this team? We're currently 7th last in the league, allowing 3.42 GA/game. Can we get that to below 3.2, which would move us into the top half?

This team certainly has more skill than the team he inherited in 95/96.

I worry we've dug too deep, but I hope they can make positive steps towards being a better team and finish the year above .500

I'm over tanking even though the draft pick is tempting.

Over .500% hockey the rest of the season, the higher the better.
Players learn how to play good 2-way hockey where they are held accountable and rewarded/punished (ice time) based on their plays.
Have the goalie coach work on the tandem to support a system (Tugger/Rhodes type) where the goalies push each other making themselves better.
Instill discipline into Sens hockey.

I don't think it will be good enough for a playoff spot given the hole they're in but j think he can get a winning record out of this group.

I think people want to see that coaching was the problem, and not that this core can't win. They want positivity and wins, so that they can go into next season and reasonably hope that the rebuild is actually over.

Even if Martin is not going to be the head coach long term, I think people want to see that this group can put it together.

I have very little expectations aside from seeing steady improvement with structure and defense. They waited too long to make the change so I'm not even going to bother getting my hopes up about making the playoffs.

I think the hole is too deep to climb out of.

I think a reasonable set of metrics would be:

• Hit 88 points (we have to play .536 hockey)
• Under 3.2 GA/game for the duration of the season

And then qualitatively, seeing Stützle, Tkachuk, Batherson, Norris and Chychrun play more responsible, cleaner games.

Detail-oriented, composed, and calm.

He wasn't a buddy, but he also wasn't a hard-ass. He just held players accountable. If you played bad, you sat. If you played well, you didn't. That was true for everyone, the stars and the grinders.

He was rigid to a fault. Was never that fiery but he definitely instilled a sense of team cohesion and defensive discipline.

The problem was when he ran into firebrands like Pat Quinn and the games turned into nasty physical battles with big emotional swings. Wasn't able to adjust for that.
