I heard that Maatta had a great game on the blueline for Finland.

- Yes he did. He was dominant at both ends. I was a proud Knights fan watching his skill level

I don't understand what happened with that Hudon non-goal.

How isn't that at least a penalty shot?

- That is exactly what I was wondering at the time

It seemed like Murphy was trying to make the tough plays all night and ended up coughing up the puck quite regularly.

- I think last year it worked a bit more for Murphy but this year everyone knows eventually he is going to cough up the puck because he doesn't use his linemates properly. He could dominate this tourney but I don't see it if he wants to do it all himself.

So frustrating when amateur officials take control of games like they did today. I don't understand what happened with that Hudon non-goal.

How isn't that at least a penalty shot?

because that's not the rule lol

1. My low value on your opinion derives from your continual usage of arguements that make it look like you didn't watch the game. Your low value of me derives from nothing more than the fact you don't agree with me it seems.

I didn't mention anything he did wrong (Because that's not what I was talking about) therefore you jumped to the absurd conclusion I thought he had a perfect game. Reinhart was strong defensively, but so was Murphy. Reinhart scored a goal, but overall his offensive game was lacking. Murphy may not have been on his game there, but compared to the other defensemen on the team? The best.

Being the best player on a losing team takes nothing away from that player. You only have to look at guys like Jordan Eberle. The best player on a losing team, does that make his performance any worse? It make not make that player feel better, but it takes absolutely nothing away from his performance. If Canada won this game 3-2 and the guy who scored the 3rd goal didn't have a strong game, what would you have to complain about? That even though they won nobody was good so it makes Murphy's performance not as impressive?

And again, what do you not understand about how there's no lineup card in hockey? Every player on the team except Paterson and Huberdeau were dressed, listing where the players will play and what role is a guess. TSN and this Finnish site gussed Murphy would be the 7th defensemen. They were wrong. You posting lineups doesn't prove anything, watching the game and seeing that Murphy was clearly playing more (And right from the get go) than Wotherspoon is proof.

1. In your own opinion. I'm wondering if you think I even have a t.v.

2. You may feel that Murphy had a good performance, but I expect more from him and I think he is capable of more. Reinhart looked way more effective offensively, while Murphy and Wotherspoon were the only defenders that were on with the game winning goal which was an even strength goal against. If you believe that makes you the best defender, I don't know what to tell you.

3. Posting lineup cards...I mean, you ask for solid proof that Murphy was slotted as the 7th dman, and I give you two sites that show the same thing. There's no point in arguing if you are going to ignore the facts that are in front of you.

The only people who like Murphy are those who are impressed by his "moves". Other than that he is a virtually ineffective and stupid hockey player.
Agree completely. Dont mind him as the 7th and the PP specialist but he pulls his fancy moves to dump the puck in or pass the puck up just like any other dman but he looks cuter doing it.

His stats show the ineffectiveness of his style offensively and hes nothing special in his end

Ryan Murphy looks alarmingly similar to Ryan Murphy two years ago. Gotta hope he just had no legs today but will be something to watch

Ryan Murphy of 2 years ago was getting fancy and putting up a tonne of points, his defense still isnt great and he isnt producing much at all. Can anyone think of one decent scoring chance that he created today?

and apparently the hurricanes who drafted him top 10, as well as much of hockey-canada who were disappointed he got cut last year. you think spott as head coach is just a coincidence? they wanted spott to solidify murphy in the squad.

i thought mackinnon was canada's best player by far; his game will be unbelievable on international ice he is just so fast it seems like he gets the puck and is flying past everyone then doesn't know what to do... i think if he can just stop up a couple times and let the following teammates catch up he will lead team canada in points... every time i have seen him he just impresses me more and more...

i thought lipon played a good simple game too.. those two stood out for me

MacKinnon was really good. I would have liked to see him on the end of some of those dishes that Rattie was getting from RNH. More than that, I could see RNH putting the puck into open space that Nathan can fly onto. He is so fast out there that he should play his way on to the top six. He will do well on international ice.

I wouldn't be surprised if you don't. You go on (Again) brining up the -1 which really makes me think you didn't watch it. They talked about it on the broadcast, Wotherspoon screwed up and Subban let in a softie that he should have stopped. The people who's opinion matter thought he was the best.

I may feel like it? Well my opinion doesn't matter, nor does yours. On the other hand, the coaches who picked player of the game think he did.

And no, it's not proof. I'm serious, why the **** do you think those are official Team Canada lineup cards (First of all, they do not have lineup cards, they dress players and scratch others, you will never get full lines published)? Give me a reason besides repeating the same bull over and over. Those are NOT official. They mean as much as the incorrect jersey numbers this thread had in the first post. Murphy was clearly not the 7th defensemen during the game, and not just later on, but right off the bat.

another newb troll non-troll

No just a guy who's been hating on Murphy for a long time and saying he sucks when he's had good games for about as long. I just ignore him now, no use arguing with him.

What's with the hate for Murphy? He was one of the better defensemen for Canada out there.

What do you determine being a good defenseman?

Because if it is playing strong in your own end, making good decisions, using your teammates, making them better, creating scoring chances, then Murphy did none of those things.

Yeah, he's got some slick hands, he's a good skater and he can beat people one-on-one. Unfortunately, once he gets past the first guy and there's four more waiting for him, using his teammates doesn't seem to be an option for him and then your defenseman is caught up ice.

Good. Besides Murphy and to a lesser extent Ouellet, he was the only defensemen who wasn't "bad".

Thank you,

Not that I was shocked that he scored, but I figured his role on this team was to be a rock onthe back end and shutdown the opposition...

Also I heard my boy Strome really didnt have a good game.
WHo were his linmates and was he playing center or wing?

Murphy spent such a small fraction of the game in his end. He was winning battles and puck races and skating it out of the zone immediately.

To say he was "bad in his own end" is pretty much mind boggling to me.

Agree with this, I was a huge fan of Murphy at the U18, yeah he didn't pass the puck and the foward had to put the brakes entering the zone waiting for him, but he was creating magic. It was well worth it.

This game he played exactly the same, his foward had to put the brakes entering the zone waiting for him, but at the U20 level it doesn't seems he can dangle arround an entire team like he was at the U18. He need to adapt, cause he simply has the tool to be something special offensively.

I'd like that when a foward is totally open in front of him and dosen't receive the puck, the foward don't put the brake en just goes offside. It might send a message and next game is still for "fun".

You might have an awesome running game, but if you never pass the ball, defense won't respect it and will stop the run. Make a couple good passes and the defense will think before cheating. If he pass the puck it will give him more space for his end to end play.

I think that's a surprisingly good analogy.

I am now pretty worried about Canadas chances to win gold. Lack of discipline/penalties and bad goal tending have cost the team the last 2 years at the WJC, it cost them at the WHC, it cost them again in this game. Today the team looked sloppy against the Finns. Mostly the thing I have noticed the last 2 years at the WJC, is the team doesn't seem to have good chemistry the players seem to be disjointed almost. Chemistry never seems to be much of a problem for the Russians, Swedes, and the Americans, but always for Canada. It also seems like the determination to win gold is not there compared to past teams. I hope this was just jet lag, nerves, and not a pattern. I hope the team gets better as the tournament goes on. I have my doubts though.

If Rattie pots one of RNH's many tap ins, it's a different game. It was a one goal loss with 2 five on three goals against. No need to panic. You listed the reasons they weren't good. Nerves, jet lag, plus they haven't played a competitive game in weeks.

As for your examples of teams with better chemistry, I question how long you've watched this tournament. Sweden? For all their supposed chemistry, last year was Sweden's first gold in 31 years. USA? Did you watch last year when they were in the relegation round? Russia? They are notoriously slow starters in this tournament and have blown many round robin games they shouldn't have lost over the years.

It's all just my opinion. The reasons I gave for why they may have played poorly were guesses only. I think penalties is what killed them more than anything else.

I still stand behind my chemistry comment. It wasn't a which nation is more successful statement, it was who seems to gell quickly together and to me the Swedes/Russians/Americans seem to gell fast and seem more like a cohesive unit it seems it always takes Canada longer to achieve the same thing.

Two goals on a 5 on 3 and Subban is now pathetic?

c`mon Ketch, you know that any true first round draft pick woulda had those:sarcasm::shakehead

This game was about as entertaining as an episode of Ellen. I don`t care about the refs, it`s not like a quick whistle, or softer penalty calls are new occurences. And for those fans here in Canada, let us not get too carried away, we have received more than a few favourable calls over the years while on home soil.

This is a "tune up" game, and I love the fact they came out and played as they did, often works as a solid eye opener. So much pressure on all these kids, representing every nation, playing for Canada comes with a bit more perhaps but still, let us not forget these aren`t kids who have been playing alongside their teammates for months.

1 game and your worried, much less a tune up game?? Maybe it`s my 30+ years of watching this great tourney, but panic need not set in until the ACTUAL tournament begins

Subban was hardly pathetic. But a great goalie likely stops 2 of those 3 goals. And we need him to be great. The teams discipline let them down way more than Subban did. They all need to get better for when the games matter.
