Maybe the scouting they did involved going down to the locker room to find out what his brother had to say about him.

"He hits real hard."

"Ok. Thanks, Marc."

I made a joke in one of the trade threads on the main boards of another Staal at 50% retained for Saarela trade? If Carolina wants to maintain two Staal's on their roster every year, we could all pitch in and pay for a plane ticket for Marc from LaGuardia to the Raleigh-Durham Airport.

You hate Staal enough to send him through Laguardia?

I don't like the guy, but he at least deserves JFK.

Worse deadline deal. Clowe or E. Staal?

Staal.

The original Clowe deal was a second, third in 2013, and a conditional second. I don't believe the conditions were met, so it became a 5th.

I guess you could say the 2013 team didn't play that well so why were they getting a rental? Well this 2016 team wasn't that good either.

I really liked Saarela and would probably value him at around a second round pick, which effectively makes the Staal trade for three 2nds.

I expect the Rangers to once again outdo themselves next year by bidding against themselves again.

Would you resign Staal if he took a Dominic Moore salary?

For sure. He still looked effective as an NHL'er but obviously no where near the level management expected him to play at. He honestly looked solid IMO, just didn't produce. He's a good 3rd liner player still. Odds are he'll be paid for his name, not his production though.

I would keep Staal as a bottom six forward at the right price.

But I don't see that happening for two reasons:

1. Someone is going to pay him for his track record, maybe one last time.

2. I'm not sure he views himself as a bottom six guy at this point.

Yeah it's interesting to see what other teams will offer. I think some team will give $3.5 with term, but if he comes back on a cheap 1 year deal or a multiyear deal at a low cost, I'd consider it.

But it's probably not going to happen.
