Unlike the chicken & egg, in this case one clearly proceeds the other.

Incompetence & excuses lead to warranted criticism, no surprise there.
There’s plenty of warm up all year long.....incompetence and unrealistic expectations lead to never ending crying....it 100% even spills into nights where we win.....there’s always an excuse to complain

The answers are usually pretty predictable but I think it's up to the media to ask some good questions.

If you had the chance what would you ask?

Or, perhaps, its that some look at the big picture & accept that a win here and there is no reason to be excited when the ship is still sinking.

We have nothing that indicates we will be better next year compared to Tampa, Toronto, and Boston. Add in the fact that Buffalo are likely going to pick top 5 and add a key player, Florida are likely going to sign Bobrovsky and Panarin, and we are likely adding nothing this off-season(Because nobody wants to come to Montreal and we lack the assets to make a trade).

Where should we be optimistic? Even if all our players progress.. Bergeron, Eichel, Barkov, Matthews, and Stamkos are better than what we have. Defense wise we are worst in the division nearly. Price is the only thing we have over other teams.

Barring some miracle where Romanov and Brook become #1D, Poehling and Kotkaniemi become a Datsyuk/Zetterberg level tandem, and we win the lottery for Hughes or Kakko; we are looking at another 9th place finish.

Three teams automatically make the playoffs from the Metro division no matter how shitty they are. We are looking to be the 6th best Atlantic team. Even if Buffalo still sucks we move up to 5th. We still have to hope that the Metro division can't muster a 4th decent team. You know Philly is going to go all in and sign a key player. New Jersey are going to do everything they can to try and keep Taylor Hall.

The best we can hope for is Toronto gets destroyed cap wise by Marner. Maybe we can make a trade with Tampa to eat Callahan's contract for something nice.

Yes......every team is getting better, only hab players will regress and Poehling was lucky, and Kotka will stagnate and Julien will hold everyone back, we ain’t signing nobody, we won’t trade for anything, we’ll be 10m$ under the cap, Price and Weber are getting older as everyone else in the league are getting younger.......ya ya ya, heard it all,

Pretty simple.

"I realize we have some good players but do you think we can realistically compete with powerhouses like TB? Up and comers like Toronto?"

He'll turn it into a softball though, "Anyone can compete in this league." maybe add in attitude, anything in possible, teamwork, etc...

Ya, you heard it all, you heard all the complaints, how this team is doomed, destined to fail, and its lead to the Habs missing the POs in the last 3 years out of 4. Wow...you sure showed all those naysayers they were wrong buddy!

But hey, we ALMOST made the POs this year! Hot diggity dang, we so good!

I think there's a big difference between ship sinking and sailing in the right direction.

Habs are anchored in the middle of the ocean IMO. We ain't sinking but we're not going anywhere either.

''Marc, every year you say the objective is to make the POs, then anything can happen. You have missed the POs in the last 3 out of 4 years. Fair to say you failed to reach your objective over those seasons?''

Bergevin has managed to fail both of his contradictory objectives.
"The goal is to make the playoffs"
*fail to miss the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years*

"We want to build through the draft"
*Lehkonen, Kotkaniemi and Mete are the only players on the team that were drafted and developed during his tenure so far*

Newsflash: we missed the POs. Lol...you ain't moving anywhere genius. You're stuck on the tarmac, grounded, going nowhere. Lol.
There’s a little truth to that right now lol

Pretty happy with our direction though......if you can’t see that, then you locked in on a CATIII approach and you can’t see jack anyways.....where I’m at it’s CAVOK, it’s okay though, soon you’ll see :)

That's a good one. Although he'll just agree "We need to be better".

The problem is the questions are irrelevant if Molson doesn't care. People think a question makes a difference but they're ALL softballs if behind the curtain Molson supports him.

A life lesson for anybody: it is better to have a plan than to set up a bunch of mutually exclusive goals.

Of course he will deflect, that's all he does. Even when he admits it's on him, he'll quickly move the blame onto somewhere else. That's where the journalists should push more and be relentless.
Bergevin is going into this presser giving himself a tap on the back with a job well done.
