But again, that was a completely non-serious throwaway line by a cameraman, not an actual question by a reporter. People have to stop citing this as evidence of anything about the sportswriters – they have plenty of their own sins.

Petey already has that swagger that all elite talents possess....he's good and he knows it, but is also driven to get better. His ppg stats are on par with some of the greats of the game through his first 36 games, and it's hardly a fluke. This Canuck team was projected to be an NHL bottom-feeder in terms of offense, and certainly would have been if Pettersson hadn't burst on the scene. And it's not like he's getting a ton of help from the rest of the roster.

But to me me it just reinforces what a crap-shoot the draft really is. Clearly he's the best player out of the 2017 draft by a country mile, and should never have dropped to fifth overall. And if by some miracle Patrick or Hischier had fallen to the Canucks at #5 that year, posters would have been over the moon.

In fact there were rumors that the Canucks were trying to move up the draft to snag one of the two d-men available, Heiskanen or Makar. They seemed particularly high on Makar.

But I guess when you're in the midst of a rebuild, pure blind luck sometimes plays a big part in it.

While I don’t think anyone will come close to touching McDavid in this era, I think EP will have a legit shot of being known as the 2nd best player of this generation. Better than Matthews, better than Laine, better than Dahlin, better than Eichel, etc. etc.
