Did this season get any closer to deciding who of the oft compared players is better?

Matthews finished with more goals and a negligible 0.01 higher PPG.
Eichel is the better player maker who plays on a worse offensive team.

Tough to compare. Eichel has slightly better line mates but faces top guys all the time as opposed to Matthews which is just half the time. Without looking I'd guess Eichel probably gets more ice time. Have to give AM the edge in view of Eichel's advantages but the gap is not big enough to get bothered about either way.

There is no option for a tie. Considering both are literally identical production wise the last 3 years pretty hard to definitively say one is clearly better then the other.

Both are ppg franchise centers. Both teams are happy to have their guy. Both have shown the ability to score 10 points in a 5 game stretch and also score 2 points in a 5 game stretch.

Matthews finished -39 behind the Leafs top +/- guy (dead last on Toronto). Eichel was -11 behind anyone on the Sabres that mattered.

conclusion: +/- is useless and this is a toss up.

Matthews dissapears too much for my liking so id take Eichal. He is noticible more and is more dynamic/entertaining.

Their offense is pretty much the same but while Eichel is nothing special defensively he is still way better than Matthews so I’ll go with him.

imo they're about as comparable as any players could reasonably be. Of the two I prefer Eichel, but cant fault anyone for choosing either.
