Rumor: Edmonton Oilers are the front runners to sign Paul Ranger

Why are people acting as if Ranger has already signed with Edmonton?

This reads like a reporter throwing stuff at a wall and hoping it sticks. Ranger has shown he is about as private about his personal life as anyone in the game. I doubt this relatively unknown insider knows where he intends to sign, if he even intends to be back at all.

Ranger seemed genuinely thrilled about playing close to home in his interviews throughout the season. If he wants to remain with organization (which, for what it is worth, I think he will), great. If he wants to go elsewhere to play for Eakins or even go back to Tampa, I wish him the best. The guy has obviously been through some tough times and him being back in the NHL would be quite the story, where ever he ends up.

Ranger will play if he wants, where he wants ...he picked the Marlies to play for, not Eakins.

he may just pick the Marlies again.

If Ranger were to return to the NHL than Edmonton would be a logical choice based on his connection to Eakins.

This is not a new concept as we have discussed this possibility on this board in the past.

Can't believe the Leafs will continue with Kostka possibly, or other alternatives like Blacker, Liles or Fraser instead of Ranger first.

Knowing the Leafs, they'll bring back ROB and Kostka and give them ice-time and let Ranger walk, along with MacArthur.

Nonis is going to be very busy, he's already knocked one goal of his this off-season (improving the goaltending depth) next up is either a top 4 D-man and a center

Ranger was never Leafs property, as he only signed an AHL contract which made him no NHL teams property and available to everyone. So he isn't in the same boat as Kostka, ROB or MacArthur who are under Leafs contracts until July 5th. Ranger is already a free agent and always was.

He simply chose to resume his hockey career in Toronto of the AHL, and using that as a potential stepping stone platform back to the NHL.

I can't believe we are getting this worked up about Paul Ranger. He looked terrible in the series the Marlies were eliminated from.

He didn't look great when I watched the Marlies, but that was before the NHL started up. Reminded me of Rick Jackman TBH.

Just had a flashback of the Big Woz!!!!

Grand Rapids made the whole team look bad. He looked good early in the season before his concussion.

He definitely would make our bottom pairing better.

Personally I think this rumor is based on nothing. I wonder if even Ranger knows what he is going to do.

Who is Josh Rimmer and how does he know what Ranger is thinking?

he has been away from the nhl game for a long time. he isnt old but he isnt a young guy. its very tough to get the speed and timing back. i suspect he will never be as good as he was in his tampa days. i wouldnt mind him on the leafs because as a 5-6 he would be an upgrade over liles/koska/holzer/frazer but realistically i definitely dont see him being a top pairing defenseman and not even a top 4 on toronto.

ranger is not bumping ANY of those guys. so people are essentially getting worked up about a rumour regarding a possible bottom pairing defenseman. it would be like freaking out because holzer got offer sheeted. i wish him the best and if he can revive his career on a western conference team then good luck to him.

Wouldn't be too sad if he goes, don't know if I want his potential psychological issues, near our club. He could end up being a distraction.

No offense man, but statements like this is why the NHL and sports as a whole needs to continually battle public misconceptions about mental health. Ranger has given absolutely ZERO indications that he would EVER be a distraction. In fact, it's fairly obvious to me that if he made a return to the NHL, the players around him would be nothing but thrilled to have him back.

First of all, we really know nothing about Ranger's "personal" reasons for leaving the NHL. The common thinking is that he has some sort of anxiety disorder, or a similar mental health affliction. In either case, it's an INTERNAL, PERSONAL issue that affects Ranger and Ranger alone. This is not a personality issue like Evander Kane has displayed. Ranger does not suffer from self-important delusions, nor has anything been said about him having a negative attitude on the ice. It's simply something Ranger deals with when he leaves the ice and goes about his normal life.

The quote above is the exact opposite of progressive "2013" mentality. We shouldn't be stigmatizing somebody for anything other than his on-ice and in-lockeroom behaviour. Ranger's problems don't affect his team performance. It simply affects him behind closed doors.

Holy **** I'll be so pissed if either one of those bums comes back to the team next year. Let them walk Nonis, please. Both were useless.

I don't see any new news here.

Eakins helped Ranger love the game again. Everybody knows players like to play for Eakins. Nothing has changed in that regard.

Everybody also knows Ranger specifically choose Toronto to be close to his family. That hasn't changed.

Everybody also knows Ranger unexpectedly walked away from a sport in the middle of his career which is almost completely unheard of. As much as Ranger like Eakins, I doubt Eakins is as important as Rangers family. I also doubt Ranger would appreciate having those long extended road trips away from his family that the Oilers have.

The guy was dying to get back into hockey but only wanted to do it close to family, now Eakins is family all of a sudden and he wants to go out west? Doesn't this sound a bit bizarre?

If he signs he is signing in Toronto.

Josh Rimmer books for Sportsnet and covers the Edmonton Oilers.

He is similar to the Leafs blogger: Jonas Siegel who covers the Maple Leafs for TSN.

Thanks, so he knows very little about Ranger's thoughts.

imo a 6th dman is worth as much as his will to be last and make an attempt to reclaim his chance at proving what he can do. my faves number 6's throughout the years have been Dimiti Yushkevich, Jamie MacCoun, Robb Zettler, Robert Svehla, Cory Cross, Aki Berg and now it is Cody Franson. If Ranger wants to be signed all he has to do is give it a shot. it looks daunting with the amount of pro dmen on the roster but any defensive specialist willing to play for their right to be on the team and give it their all and be a true defender of the cage is worth about 3 million per season.

Pretty much none of those guys were number 6's.
