BLUE JACKETS NOTES GAME 5 SNAPSHOT The Blue Jackets scored three goals in the third period to tie the game at three before David Pastrnak notched the game-winner for Boston with 1:28 left in regulation. The Jackets have recorded a multi-goal period in seven of the nine playoff games (10 total). It was the second time in the postseason that the Jackets recorded three goals (3rd period in Game 4 vs. Tampa Bay on Apr. 16). It was also the first time the Jackets lost consecutive games this postseason.

COMING HOME The Jackets look to force a Game 7 in tonight’s must-win contest against the Bruins at Nationwide Arena. Columbus, who lost their first home contest of the postseason in Game 4 on Thursday, has won eight of its last 10 home contests and outscored opponents 39-22 since March 9 (Apr. 2 vs. BOS, 6-2 L; G4 vs. BOS, 4-1 L). The club has won 13 of the last 17 games overall since Mar. 24 (at Vancouver), outscoring opponents 64-36 (not including SO goals).

SPECIAL (TEAMS) DELIVERY The Jackets finished perfect on the penalty kill for the fifth time this postseason in Game 5 in Boston (2-for-2). Columbus is now 20-for24 on the penalty kill during the playoffs (83.3 pct.; 5th in the NHL). The club, which is 6-0 when scoring a power play goal this postseason, continues to lead the league in power-play percentage (29.6 pct.; 8-for-27).

ROUND 2 BATTLE The Blue Jackets face the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the franchise’s third-consecutive playoff appearance and fifth all-time. It’s the first time the Jackets have appeared in the second round in the postseason in franchise history. Columbus is facing Boston for the first time in the postseason, who are making their third-straight playoff appearance and 10th in the last 12 seasons.

NHL FIRSTS ON THE BACK END Two Blue Jackets defensemen notched NHL firsts in Game 5 on Saturday. Dean Kukan scored his first career NHL goal, joining Colorado’s Cale Makar as the second defenseman this postseason to score his first career goal in a Stanley Cup Playoffs game. It was marked his first career playoff point. Fellow blueliner Vladislav Gavrikov made his NHL debut, finishing with 14:17 of ice time. He had played for SKA in the Kontinental Hockey League during the regular season.

TOP JACKETS The Blue Jackets have been one of the best teams in the league over the past three seasons, ranking fourth in the league in wins since 2016-17 with 142 victories. They have or are facing all four of the other teams in the top five in the playoffs since that campaign, Tampa Bay (1st, 158), Washington (2nd, 153), Boston (3rd, 143) and Pittsburgh (5th-T, 141). Columbus is one of just seven teams to earn a playoff berth in each of the past three seasons.

Preview: Bruins head to Columbus with a chance to close it out in Game 6

• This is slightly oversimplifying things, but it’s worth nothing: you could argue that the Bruins’ PK has been what’s turned this series around. In Games 2 and 3, Columbus went a combined 3 for 7 on the PP. In Games 4 and 5, Columbus went a combined 0 for 6 on the PP, including a huge 0 for 4 showing on home ice in Game 4. It’s hard to say if it’s the Bruins PK guys or Tuukka Rask that’s made the difference. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

• Saturday night’s game showed the quick-strike ability of this Columbus team, proving that they’re never really out of a game. There’s so much talent on this team that a two-goal deficit isn’t the end of the world. The Bruins need to plan accordingly, should they find themselves with a lead.

• As was noted by one of you fine commenters, John Tortorella really shortened his bench toward the end of Game 5, rolling three lines that were more laden with talent than the normal 4-line spread. Is this something he gambles on continuing in Game 6? The plus: more talent; the minus: fatigued players.

• Speaking of the Columbus lineup, Tortorella rolled 7 defensemen in Game 5, though Adam Clendening barely played. My theory on this is two-fold: someone was nursing an injury and he wanted a healthy body in case that player couldn’t be effective, or he was trying to take some of the load off of Seth Jones and Zach Werenski, who have been monsters in this series.

• Sergei Bobrovsky had a number of sparkling saves in Game 5, but had a couple he’d like to have back too. The Bruins’ first goal was a tough one to allow, but he more than made up for it with some big ones down the stretch. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough, but Bobrovsky has more than proved that he can steal a game.

• The Bruins’ third line has been quiet over the last few games. After being one of the best players on the ice in the first couple of games, Charlie Coyle has quieted down a bit (though he’s still been effective). Marcus Johansson has contributed as well, and Danton Heinenhad a few decent chances in Game 5. The play has been solid for that line, but the pucks haven’t gone in. They should be able to capitalize on favorable match-ups from a shortened Columbus bench.

• If you’re a Bruins fan, you can’t help but be encouraged by the performance of the first line’s players in Games 4 and 5. Game 4 saw David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron come alive, while Game 5 saw Pastrnak and Brad Marchand get going. If that line can play at the top of its game, Columbus isn’t going to be able to keep up; if they can clamp down on them as they did in the early games, the Bruins could be in a tough spot.

• The Bruins played arguably their best game of the playoffs last time out in this building. They were responsible on defense, crisp on breakouts, and did a great job limiting second-chance opportunities. Why? They jumped out to a two-goal lead, preventing Columbus from collapsing on the slot to block shots. Maybe try that approach again tonight, fellas.

• It’s hard to see Bruce Cassidy tinkering with the lineup tonight. Barring unknown injuries, the only real switch to be made would be to reinsert Noel Acciari, if he’s ready to go.

It NEEDS to be a full team effort with NO passengers, no mental ****ups by Marchand. Shut them down and enjoy a few days rest and rehab before the next series or RISK coming home and blowing it!

AND: If Backes brings it in his "way." I would also like to see the B's crash the net at least ONCE ffs!
