They're still negotiating because it's July 25th. There is no rush to get pen to paper and if he can wait 3 weeks and get 6x6.25 instead of 6x6 when there is no actual pressure on either side to make a deal, why would he give up another 1.5M? Also, he's letting his agent do most, if not all, of the negotiating. Saying "I want to be here, but I want you to look out for me too".
or he cold be asking for 8x8m

the reports are just speculations. "John Tavares said I want to be an Islander" for 9 years. unless they are inside Larkins head they just dont know

Should be somewhere near 8 x 7-7.5. We are talking about one of the fastest young players in the league, so he should get a pretty big deal. Anything below 6.5 mil is a joke for being as fast as he is and being a 60+ point center. At the end of his contract, he will be getting under-paid by a crap ton.

Be careful how you use the "T" word around these parts. Isles fans get seriously triggered.

i know that

the "Twin who res of Toronto" earned that distinction by lying their way out of dodge. He was a free agent, he didnt have to do that. he could have done exactly the same thing and been 100% honest about it. he could have said, hey I'm getting Married and my fiancee has an established practice in Toronto, and no one would have blamed him. He'd earned that right.

but because he didnt want to be inconvenienced by an in-season trade, he went to ownership and said I want to be an Islander and Asked not to be traded. he played the role of Captain to the hilt.
commending his close friend Josh Bailey for leaving money on the table to resign with the Islanders, so he could Play with his friend and captain. Tavares even individually called to welcome the Islanders top draft picks, to express how he was looking forward to playing with them in training camp to use Oliver Wahlstroms exact words.

Why do that? Be a man about it. we likely see the same thing happening with Jacob Trouba. Fans have every right to be incensed by blatant duplicity.

Or he really couldn't decide until he had a sit-down meeting with Toronto and got to see what their plans were..

You sound salty.

Was Tavares from NYC? Did Tavares play hockey for a New York school? And Tavares DID want to be an Islander. He also wanted to play closer to where he was born for a truckload of money after he was underpaid for so long. Everything about Dylan Larkin suggests that he's smart and..

1) won't rake his hometown team over the coals without a huge justification to do so
or
2) while they're going through their rebuild and when in the next year or two, they'll be rolling in cap space when guys retire.

I would be blown away if Larkin was asking for 8x8. There is no justification in the slightest for it... AGAIN BECAUSE HE'S AN RFA AND THOSE GUYS ARE BASED OFF COMPARABLES, NOT UFA PRICES. He gets an Ehlers or Schiefele contract max.

If Larkin has a smart agent, hell, I would probably tell him he should go with a two year bridge at 4-4.5M if possible. Set yourself up for a bigger payday when Detroit has more cap. They'll be so grateful that you didn't put their feet to the fire now that you might get that 8x8 or 8x9 in a couple years.

i dont know what he'll sign for, but if those reports were valid would he not be signed already?

seems to me that either he wants more term or dollars than those reports or they wouldnt STILL BE NEGOTIATING, that much is self evident

for all anybody knows he could sign for less, in which case the reports are still wrong. Reports mean next to nothing while negotiations are ongoing. 9 times out of 10 its just a reporter speculating

I guess all the reporters are just speculating the same exact numbers.

Even if he gets bridged, why are people saying 2 years? Mantha and AA both signed 2 year deals. A two year bridge for Larkin means the team has to deal with the same trifecta in the same offseason all over again.

Granted, we should, at least theoretically, have more cap to work with. But at the same, also theoretically, all three cap hits will be much higher in 2 years.

Probably because you are not comprehending that the cap keeps rising. Larkin is a rising star that could possibly hit 70 + points in a season and those are quite rare. If he were to ever reach 70 points before he signs a contract, it would be his right to ask for 8 x 8 mil.

Don't they have to move a contract to be able to re-sign him..?

JUST KIDDING!

He's getting signed for 5-6 years. Anything more than $6.5 million/year could be dangerous. I think he's going to continue developing, but you can never be sure. Hell, after his 2nd season even Ken Holland wasn't sure (hence the Frans Nielsen signing).

$6.0m+ contracts for centers with less then 70 points the past season:

Jonathan Toews $10.5m
Leon Draisaitl $9.5m
Ryan Getzlaf $8.25m -- injured, 70+ pace
Ryan Johansen $8m
Joe Thornton $8m
Jason Spezza $7.5m
Ryan O'Reilly $7.5m
David Krejci $7.25m
Paul Stastny $7m
Ryan Kesler $6.75m
Patrice Bergeron $6.875m -- injured, 70+ pace
Mikko Koivu $6.75m
Nicklas Backstrom $6.7m
Derek Stepan $6.5m
Sean Monahan $6.375m
Mark Scheifele $6.125m -- injured, 70+ pace
Henrik Zetterberg $6.083m
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins $6m
David Backes $6m
Matt Duchene $6m
Joe Pavelski $6m
Logan Couture $6m
Tomas Plekanec $6m
Jordan Staal $6m

Looking at when a lot of those contracts were signed and adjusting for cap inflation it doesn't seem at all unreasonable to expect $7m+ if Larkin is signed to a max 8 year deal.

For example, when Sean Monahan signed his 7 year $6.375m extension, that was 8.73% of the cap. A similar % for Larkin would put him at $6.95m.

5-6 years x 6.25-6.5m
Or
8 years x 8.05m

Larkin RFA Breakdown @ ~8 million:
RFA Year 1 - 6
RFA Year 2 - 6.5
RFA Year 3 - 7
RFA Year 4 - 7.5
Year 5 - 9.5
Year 6 - 9.5
Year 7 - 9.5
Year 8 - 9.5
AAV - 8.125

Yikes, no thanks on that one Boss Hogg.

I'll admit, I estimated mine a little low, but that's more about Larkin not demanding his agent to be like Darren Ferris while still getting 50+ million for his contract.

Bo Horvat is much better comparable to Larkin than Drai is.
I think Larkin has a lot higher offensive ceiling than Bo. Bo to me maxes out at upper 50 a low 60 points per season in his ideal situation. Larkin can put up well over 70 imo.

Does he go 6 or 8 years?
