The 2019 draft might end up being the most loaded draft in terms of the amount of talent in the 1st round in the last 25 years. Looking back at that draft, I am happy management knew better than most on the board and took Cozens.
For recent years it’s tough to beat 2015. I don’t see 2019 doing that.

Yeah, if I recall.....the Zboril selection actually made some sense. But DeBrusk had a late 1st grade while Senyshyn had a late 1st/early 2nd grade.

They were immediately pilloried for not taking Barzal

Yeah, Barzal was a strange faller. I remember when those guys were in AAA and Barzal was talked about as being just a step behind McDavid. Obviously Eichel supplanted him as the clear-cut #2 in that class, but it's not like Barzal disappointed in juniors. Weird that he wasn't a top 5-10 pick.

I'm just ridiculously thankful that Boston did indeed take the players that they did. Imagine if they were able to build an entirely new first line and revamp themselves in one fell-swoop, even though they haven't exactly fallen-off as a result yet...

I'd bet they win multiple cups with an entire line of stars on ELC's. They'd be every bit as talented and deep as Tampa Bay has been the last handful of years. The Atlantic Div./Eastern Conference/League dodged a bullet with that one.

Sabres had 3 firsts that year too. Hated trading 2 of them away. Sigh...
I'm probably in the minority but I like Lehner, including during his time in Buffalo ... apart from the fact he couldn't save a Shootout goal to save his life. Still, imagine if instead of trading to get Lehner we'd picked Samsonov instead?

Or imagine they'd gotten Lehner the help he needed instead of whatever f***wittery Murray was up to on a daily basis and they get the version we saw on the Island or most nights in Vegas?

Not trying to rain on the parade too much, but after looking a little closer he had less than 3 minutes against Crosby.

He was "matched up" with matthews at times, but the tage line had the most head to head minutes and was equally successful.

He did well, this isn't a shot at him, but the way this is presented in the tweet is a bit misleading

I think your being a bit misleading yourself.

Cozens didn’t just go against the Mathers line “at times”. His line and Tage’s effectivey split the matchup with Mathews. Each getting around 7mins against him. Skinner 7:15/Tage 7:59/Asplund 7:21 and Caggiula 7:04/Cozens 6:51/Hino 7:18

You seem to be suggesting he hardly played again Mathews.

The Crosby stuff in that tweet is misleading but it could be an honest mistake from lazy research. Cozens linemates played the most against Crosby of all the forwards (almost 5mins). Maybe they assumed Cozens was with them and didn’t dig further. Bad research.

Granato basically rolled the lines against Crosby

R2 ——> 3:46 vs Crosby
Eakin -> 3:15
Cozens -> 2:52
Tage —> 2:33

I bring this stuff up because big picture Cozens was trusted in the last 3 games vs some of the best. He’s not longer someone Granato feels he needs to hide.

He’s come a long way from game 4 vs Boston when Granato did what he could to hide him from that line. Cozens only playing 10 secs against them.

To me the connotation of matching up is intentionally playing against.

So if a guy matches up against an opponent, its the bulk of the minutes. If they play a few minutes overlapping its coincidence, and if its somewhere in between its matching up at times. My definition at least, but I see what you're saying

I agree with your second post. It does show granato has more trust, but that also seemed to not be the intention of the tweet
