Value of: Dumpster Diving / Scrap Heap / Free To A Good Home

Hi all!

Just wanted to get a collection going of players that your team has that could be had for free in a trade. Who on your team is available for next-to-nothing. Maybe players that have been passed by on the depth chart, have declining skills, or just never meshed with the team.

I'm not talking about cap-dumps. Datsyuk's contract and Bickell were not traded for nothing. They were traded for less. I'm talking about someone that could potentially contribute somewhere else, but wouldn't be missed on their current roster.

Also not talking about bargain bin free agents. Everyone knows they could be picked up for just cash. This is different.

I'm kind of thinking of the Daley trade from Chicago to PIT. Or perhaps a player that nearly got bought out? some examples from my team, Toronto, Peter Holland or Jonathan Bernier could both be had for free. Each could contribute, (although Bernier may be closer to a cap-dump at this point).

Our "Joffrey" is an occasionally healthy, senior fella who has had all his shots and has been "fixed" numerous times for a host of ailments. As an older boy, he'll help keep the pups in line when not visiting the trainer. Ideally, you'll provide a safe place for him to play as he enters the twilight of his career. He likes regular grooming, and lots of time away from the rest of the pack to lick his many wounds. Joffrey is friendly, outgoing and social-media-savvy.
Adoption fee: 5.25 million for two years.

"Milan" came to us last season. Once a prominent piece in Ottawa, he became a stray when the team moved in a younger direction. He was acquired in a package in exchange for "Dion", an aggressive, larger male who did well at Babcock's obedience school before finding his forever home.
While a bit timid, this senior fella still remembers a few tricks, and with a relatively low one-time adoption fee of just 4 million, he's yours for a box of milk-bones.

We also have a "Jared", who is an extra large breed, but his hip problems make him unsuitable for adoption.

Unfortunately, "Robidas", who has been in our care for a number of years, hasn't responded well to treatment and is scheduled to be euthanized. Donations are gladly accepted, to be redistributed to the NHLPA pension plan.

The sharks don't have to move anyone, but once Demelo, Nieto, and UFA G (if not Dell) have signed, they will be right on the cap, meaning that either Wingels (likely) or Dillon (less lilkely) will be traded. I believe both are worth picks, but if Wilson waits until just before camp/early season, I imagine they'll return less.

Nate Prosser. Useful as a #6D.

Wild have 2 NHL ready D prospects with good size in the AHL (Folin and Olofsson). Bottom pair NHL players in most teams. Folin is 25 and Olofsson 21.

Prosser is a perennial 7th D that never whines and apparently is a good locker room guy. Will take a hit to complete a pass and block shots with abandon. Follows coaching, but his ability/shot/size are fringe roster and he has no upside. Takes a roster spot from one of the kids, so we could drop Prosser to make space.

Pomminville has maybe zero value if you are kind. Maybe a cap dump. Definitely in the dumpster heap, but how stinky is the question.

You might get some quibbles from other Blues fans, but I'd move Lehtera for anything we could get. He has serious stamina issues and is worthless after 30 games. People think he could get better as he does have skill, but his salary is just too much for him to ghost the entire back-half of the season. 34 points playing primarily with Tarasenko and Steen is awful. His $4.7M contract kept us from making any impact moves this off-season. His lack of foot-speed and questionable defense makes line combinations and usage problematic. While we wouldn't be a better team by removing him, it would give us the room to make a move to get considerably better.

Brian Flynn - decent 4th line player or 13th forward. Has speed in spades, works hard, and some skills (has been used in the shootouts before). A bit small and soft, and the Habs have too many players of this ilk in the bottom-6.

David Desharnais - at 3.5M for 1 year he wouldnt be a burden for a rebuilding squad looking for a playmaking C for their 2nd line. Excels on the PP. Good leader, works hard.

Alexei Emelin - has more value IMO than most people think... can play well as a bottom-pairing guy but is overpaid. Is very physical, skates well, can make good outlet passes most of the time. A bit of trouble in the defensive end. Not sure if Bergevin would let him go.

MAYBE ONE or TWO of - Andrighetto, Hudon, Danault, Matteau, De La Rose, Carr... basically depending on who makes the team out of camp / who looks good at camp / who doesn't.... some of these guys will be on waivers.
