We're already going for it, this is a first place team without augmenting it and despite mediocre goaltending (on the whole, Campbell has been great).

I'm also not saying dont trade any future away, just need to keep perspective - Pittsburgh and Chicago are still in the same compete windows that started in the mid 2000's, we're built for the same kind of long contention window and we'll need cheap replacements along the way.

If your goal is to make it out out of the North you probably don't need anything you can probably get to thr final 4 with what you have now.

But if your goal is to win a championship then that means beating Tampa, Vegas, Colorado, Boston etc.

You want to do that you need more.

If any of the prospects in the A list or one of many of the prospects on the B list are being traded, it'll be for a player with term and not a pending UFA. Try and keep that in mind for your proposals.
In any other year, I’d agree, but the expansion draft makes acquiring players with term less appealing. You’ll inevitably lose them to Seattle.

Personally, I don't think Dubas would make a deal for a player like Mantha; simply because they don't have a way to afford him beyond this year (assuming they could afford him for this year). It would mean you're forced into trading William Nylander in the offseason.

That being said, as somebody who doesn't really like the "fit" of the big 4 together, I'd entertain the deal. I'd assume retention for Mantha would be off the table, but Bernier likely retained at 50% without issue... the two of them for Frederik Andersen, Alex Kerfoot, and futures. Leafs then trade Nylander in the offseason as they'll need to pick up a goalie.
i just blurted out that idea without knowing leafs contract situation , i didnt realize there is no wiggle room

Dubas' proposal surprised me.
I wrote that I think GM Dubas' job is excellent (considering the problems with the salary cap).
I talked about two disadvantages:
Goalkeeper problem.
Nylander trade.
I wrote in my comment (CBJ (Savard) - TOR)):
“I understand that for such an exchange, fans of both teams can throw rotten tomatoes at me.

I have repeatedly written in the comments that I consider the health of goalkeepers to be the main problem in Toronto. First goalkeeper!!!.
It is advisable to leave in the team: Robertson, Amirov, Liljegren, Sandin.
I think Toronto should exchange Nylander ($ 6,962,366)!!!

TOR
Merzlikins (@ 50% Ret)
Savard (@ 50% Ret)
Foligno (@ 50% Ret)
Total - $ 6,875,000

CBJ
Nylander $ 6,962,366
CBJ would strengthen its bargaining power with Laine.

Possibility of exchanging Nylander (Laine) depending on the outcome of the negotiations.

Of course, this is just a template for a deal. It is possible to add a player from the list, taking into account the salary cap: Domi, Kerfoot, Andersen, Campbell.
It is possible to include these players in another deal.

Toronto has many alternatives. There is no point in overpaying.

Toronto's next move could be an exchange:
TOR - Palmieri (@ 50% Ret)
NJD - 1st round pick 2021 + B prospect +? ? ?

The club would be among the favorites for the Stanley Cup.

In the summer, the club would have free money.

The best prospects would remain with the team”.
C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image001.gif

I wrote in another comment:
”I think Toronto needs to change Nylander.
This is an anchor on the ship "Toronto"

Nylander $ 6,962,366 (good player) = bad pay for Toronto (NMC - Tawares).
Nylander $ 6,962,366 (good player) = good salary for another club.
I'm not afraid to make a mistake - I'm human.

I suggest another exchange option:
TOR

Merzlikins (@ 50% Ret)
Domi (@ 50% Ret)
Foligno (@ 50% Ret)

Total - $7,400,000

CBJ
Nylander $ 6,962,366
Kerfoot $3,500,000
Total - $10,462,366

Toronto may add: B prospect +?

Approximate difference - $ 3,000,000

CBJ - PROJECTED CAP SPACE: $ 1,375,019 (Capfriendly)

Next exchange CBJ

NHL Club
Savard $ 4,250,000
CBJ
Round ? draft 2021?

PROJECTED CAP SPACE (CBJ): $1,000,000 + free money.

TOR ($3,000,000 free money) + Palmieri (@ 50% Ret) = $700,000 free money.

Toronto squad after 2021 exchanges:
FORWARDS

HYMAN - MATTHEWS - MARNER
FOLIGNO – TAVARES - PALMIERI
GALCHENYUK – DOMI – SPEZZA
MIKHEYEV – THORNTON - SIMMONDS

Goalkeepers: Andersen, Campbell, Merzlikins.

This is an exchange template!
Nylander is interesting for many teams.
The partner in the deal may be different!!!

I think it's better to change Nylander.
Keep in the team:
Robertson, Amirov, Liljegren, Sandin.

Offer your exchange option.
Exchange results: good chances of winning the Stanley Cup, free money, best prospects.
Things are good. :)

Look at how often Presidents trophy teams win the cup, it is far more random than you're giving it credit for.

If we were to deal Nylander, I would go after Atkinson+Merzlikins both retained.
Now obv we would add
Nylander+2021 1st+Amirov for Alkinson(30% retained)+Merzlikins(30% retained)

Boston the same elite team anymore? there's a chance they miss playoffs this year. not sure they belong being mentioned with those teams right now

I think this is Toronto's overpayment.
“Nylander + 2021 1st + Amirov”?
I think TOR will say no.
Atkinson $ 5,875,000 UFA 2025 (30% - $ 1,750,000).
CBJ will say no?

Even then, Colorado needs to have Grubauer stay healthy or they’re finished. They haven’t made it past the second round since 2002.

Im not against getting another goalie. before I wanted Gibson. dont think we need to go after a guy like that anymore. and who knows maybe Freddy will be fine as a backup to Campbell.

Bernier, Raanta, Ullmark, or Reimer would be my choices. They could run a 1A/1B with Campbell, and expect something better than Andersen’s .897 SV%.

As if the north is a walk in the park. Campbell is running hot but history tells us that his play is unsustainable. Depending on who’s Toronto facing on R1 and R2 (if its Montreal and Winnipeg and they make it through), they might come in the semi really, really banged up.

I expect lots of smoke and no fire, but we'll see.

It seems like the trade deadline will be underwhelming for TOR.

TOR needs the other team to eat salary/take a not so good player (Engvall/Kerfoot) in exchange for a so-so prospect or a 4th round pick. Maybe Toronto could offer up their 1st, but what does that buy? Do they they have the cap space for what a 1st gets you?

Other than a goalie, what is Toronto looking for?

Depth Defenseman
Left winger (top 9)
3rd line Center

Yes it is a tall order. I doubt Dubas will satisfy all 3. He might barely find a taker and cap space for 1 of these deficiencies.

The Rangers don't have much to offer, unless you are interested in Brendan Smith at 50% for a 5th round pick or something. Maybe we trade someone like Blackwell or Rooney, who have been good depth players for us.
