I don’t recall the specifics and I don’t think it was be player, but I do believe they played some games with the cap around their D corps. The healthy blueline cap hit for Hamhuis, Ballard, Salo, Erhoff, Edler, etc. would’ve put the team way over the cap.Really. Who was it?
Ok thanks.I don’t recall the specifics and I don’t think it was be player, but I do believe they played some games with the cap around their D corps. The healthy blueline cap hit for Hamhuis, Ballard, Salo, Erhoff, Edler, etc. would’ve put the team way over the cap.
Some convenient timing to say the least for NJD. Who do they spend it on?? Gibson?
At the end of the day it doesn't matter financially to the players or the owners. So if it allows a couple extra trades that draw interest, it's worth it to the league.Hahah I really don't see how this is still allowed. Even if it isn't on purpose, salary cap should apply in the playoffs, you shouldn't be able to operate 9mil above the cap.
I think half the d core was injured. They added a bunch of depth players at the deadline like Higgins and Lapierre. Basically manipulated the cap the entire season. Towards the end of the regular season, I think Edler and Salo were healthy but they pretended that they needed more time otherwise they would have been over the cap.Really. Who was it?
Nicely done.I think half the d core was injured. They added a bunch of depth players at the deadline like Higgins and Lapierre. Basically manipulated the cap the entire season. Who do the devils need more, Hanifin or Tanev?
Pull the trigger now on a goalie and d please
Difference is NJ is fighting just to get into the playoffs and could have used Dougie badly. Vegas was comfortably in a playoff spot.
I tend to agree but I’d be a little more lenient. For example, any player coming off LTIR come playoff time cannot play in the first round.
When Tampa did it, there wasn’t any rule against doing it. Now there is, as the league stated last March, before and after the deadline, it will no longer tolerate using LTIR money like that again. That there would be severe penalties. The league deciding to punish the Devils for something they previously allowed would be very on brand.
The point of the salary cap was cost certainty to curb the player salary arm race of the late 90s/early 00s that would drive 2/3 of the League to bankruptcy if carried to a natural conclusion. The point of the salary cap was largely to level the playing field between between teams. By not following this in the playoffs, you are essentially eliminating that balance for the most important portion of the season…
I'd say a truly torn pec suffered when it was will withstand any and all legitimate scrutiny by the league. When Tampa did it, there wasn’t any rule against doing it. Now there is, as the league stated last March, before and after the deadline, it will no longer tolerate using LTIR money like that again. That there would be severe penalties.
This would be an identical situation to Tampa. Much different than Vegas…
What Vegas did last year was completely different. They used LTIR for its intended purpose. Lehner never played last year at all, and Stone was activated prior to the playoffs. Actually earlier than anticipated. Well before even playing, just so there were no accusations.
When he had his surgery last January, there was no timetable for his return. It was listed as month to month. Many reports said they didn’t know if he’d play at all last season, after the surgery, and hopefully he was ready for camp. If anyone could’ve attempted to circumvent the cap for the playoffs, they would've been the team to try, with an open-ended return date.
So the Devils can’t play any games with the timetable. The teams like Vegas, Boston and Toronto last year, who were warned there would be severe punishment, were told, if they think a player will return for the playoffs, they better activate him prior to the season ending, and be cap compliant. They all did so.
So NJ isn’t going to press their luck here. At the least, the NHL would say Hamilton can’t play, but would also likely take numerous 1st Round Picks from them OR give them a $9 million penalty next season, on top of not allowing Hamilton to play.
It’s just not worth trying it. They’re waiting to pounce on a team who tries doing it again.
This is stupid. Hamilton is legitimately hurt with a timeline that is proven to be 4-6 months. The devils also seem to need the help to even make the playoffs. When Tampa did it, there wasn’t any rule against doing it. Now there is, as the league stated last March, before and after the deadline, it will no longer tolerate using LTIR money like that again. That there would be severe penalties.

Well the Devil's do have a history of getting away with doing the same thing other teams in the league do..... hopefully this one will be just as kovienient.Wait…. Why is nobody freaking out about this? Conspiracy’s??? Cheating?! Oh wait it’s the Devils it’s fine
