These were the results under the current lottery system prior to tonight.

2016: Toronto had the best odds prior to the lottery and won the 1st overall pick.

2017: Colorado had the best odds prior to the lottery, however New Jersey won the 1st pick and Colorado feel to the 4th overall pick.

2018: Buffalo had the best odds prior to the lottery and won the 1st overall pick.

2019: Colorado via Ottawa's 1st round pick had the best odds prior to the lottery, however New Jersey won the 1st pick and Colorado feel to the 4th overall pick.

So in 5 years the worst teams have got the 1st overall pick only two times and three times a team will have jumped up into the 1st pick.

I like the system just fine. It’s entertaining and interesting this way, and tanking isn’t a sure way to load up on talent. It’s also kind of awesome (even though I HATE NJ and really, really like Colorado) that twice the Avs should have been #1 and both times not only fell to 4th but both times somehow NJ grabbed #1. What are the odds of that?

I'm okay with the system (each non-playoff team having a shot) but the numbers really need to be readjusted.

The correct change was to leave it as it was and make a team that wins #1OA ineligible in the following 3 years.

The problem wasn't low odds teams winning too often. It was the same team winning three years in a row.
Technically Edmonton didn't actually win the draft lottery three years in a row. Yes they got the 1st overall pick in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

However in 2011 it was New Jersey who won the draft lottery moving from the 8th pick to the 4th pick, because at that time you could only move up four spots. Edmonton who finished last place overall simply retained the 1st overall pick.

Ehh, same difference. Lotto odds should've stayed the same, but you can't pick 1st more than once in 4 years. (If you get it in 2020, you can't get it the three years after that)

The problem with this is not all #1 picks are the same. Some poor team will end up with a Yakupov slug and be unable to win the following year in a McDavid draft.

EDIT: Just noticed that you said the next 3 drafts. Horrible idea.

Besides Edmonton getting the 1st overall pick three years in a row, I thought the NHL also changed it to what we see today because of the obvious tanking by Buffalo. Also when they voted on the current draft lottery system it was Tim Murray when he was the Sabres GM who said it didn't need to be changed, so I don't think it was a coincidence he felt like that.

Sabres GM Tim Murray: 'really no appetite' to change NHL Draft format

Honestly man... I think a lot of Yakupov busting was shit development.

... It's also because, as we know now, his attitude sucks.

That’s part of the issue. Add the fact that teams are moving up so drastically and that’s almost worse.

Don't forget in 2017 Philadelphia moved up from 13th overall to 2nd overall, in 2018 Carolina moved up from 12th overall to 2nd overall, and in 2019 Chicago moved up from 11th overall to 3rd overall.

How about a hybrid like they had in 2015? Every team gets a shot at #1 overall but that's it, not three lotteries.

Seems a lot more reasonable to me.

For sure. And how far is the mystery team going to move up this year to 1st overall?
This year all the teams who lose in the play in round will have a 12.5% chance of winning the 1st overall pick.

Team E got the 1st pick with only a 2.5% chance and Bob McKenzie said it's the lowest that the 1st overall pick was won with those odds and they were the 12th seed in the lottery.

I don't care how you phrase it. 24 teams made playoffs which should mean only the bottom 7 team that did not make playoffs should have a chance at drafting 1st OA. but nope it's the NHL and we're gonna see the Pens Leafs or Oilers win it.

According to Brian Burke it was Yakupov's attitude.

Not one Oilers fan nor the Oilers media had anything negative to say about Yak's supposed "bad attitude" while he was with the team for 4 years. But sure, let's all listen to Burke and his pre-draft interview with Yak as if that's relevant.
