Carey Price just turned 33 years old. I know this forum is often split on where he should rank among goalies in league today - but I don't think even his biggest detractors have ever really criticized his talent or ability - they usually just rank him lower because of consistency (ie if you don't have a good season, you go down). I bring this up because I think he just proved this summer that when on his game, he's still arguably the best, or certainly among the best in the game. So putting together a vezina-worthy season still seems plausible at his age.
Goalies have been very much up and down in the past few years. Great year, followed by a so-so one, and so on. And the Vezina trophy race has probably been the most unpredictable one among trophies.
For historical comparison, goalies who have won a Vezina recently at ages 33 and over:
Rinne won at 35
Thomas won at 34 and 36
Brodeur won at 34 and 35
Hasek won at 33, 34 and 36.
So in the past 22 seasons, 8x has a goalie aged 33 and over won a Vezina, or approx. 36% of the time. So although age is definitely an important factor - it certainly doesn't appear to be a deal breaker.
So what's your prediction - does Carey Price win another Vezina trophy in his career, or no?
