Do you like when teams name themselves after states/provinces?

Many teams in different sports tend to give their team name based on the state or province they are in such as the Saskatchewan Roughriders and BC Lions in the CFL. In the NHL the most famous are likely the Colorado Avalanche and the New Jersey Devils. I feel the only reason they name these teams without using the city name is to gain a bigger fanbase and audience as having a team named after just a city name makes them more secluded to a smaller area of people. I personally don't really like it because it can confuse some people as to where the team is actually located. Best example would be the Florida Panthers who are in a small city of less than 100,000 people called Sunrise. If I didn't already know that I would have guessed they were based in Miami which isn't the case for them. Do you prefer teams named after cities or states/provinces?

No, because I hate when people think of the Panthers when you say Florida hockey.
No offense Panthers bros, but you don't exactly have the best fanbase or hockey team to represent our state..and as a result, the Lightning will always be tied to the things the Panthers represent Florida with.

That is a very great point and I am glad you brought that up. When I think of Florida hockey I think of Tampa Bay. Although technically the Tampa Bay Lighting are kind of unique were your team should be technically called just Tampa Lighting because that is the city name but I feel Tampa Bay Lighting sounds way better.

The Quebec Canadiens would be an hilarious name

As for the real ones, I don't really care.

It does seem a bit strange, when they are not even the only team in the state (like the Panthers). I personally don't mind it at all for Arizona, Carolina or Colorado though.

Well, I guess, I do mind for Arizona, but only because they changed it and I had a rough time getting used to it. If they had never been the Phoenix Coyotes, it'd be different.

So frustrating that both the Islanders and Rangers are named after the state. Especially when Buffalo is also in New York. :sarcasm:

Yeah I always see Tampa brought up in franchises that struggle but that hasn't been true for a long time now. They do really well in attendance.

So shouldn't the Hurricanes really be the North Carolina Hurricanes?

The Carolinas are a little weird in regards to that. Even the University of South Carolina an the University of North Carolina have "Carolina" on their team uniforms most of the time.

It makes sense in a sport like football; the Saskatchewan Roughriders only play 18 games a season, usually on weekends and they attract people from around the province who are able to drive long distances to games. They do represent the whole province. In hockey there are too many games to attract people from long distances on a regular basis (and in northern cities, the weather can be bad for driving). It makes more sense that they really represent their city and not the state/province.

You are absolutely right about everything. I live in Regina and I can tell you that the Saskatchewan Roughriders have easily the best fanbase in the CFL. They represent our province fully and since we are the only big province in Canada that doesn't have an NHL team, football is the biggest thing here people follow. I am saying this without being biased and I ain't even a big football fan. If the Roughriders were called the Regina Roughriders they wouldn't be nearly as popular. Every province in Canada that has a CFL team is most likely following their NHL team the most.

Would it bother you if they wore shoulder patches with the Canadian and Saskatchewan flags on their jerseys?

The only one where I find it *slightly* distasteful is Florida, because they were the second team in the state (Lightning = 1992, Panthers =1993).

It takes some brass cojones to be the second team in a state, and claim to represent the entire state.

For those questioning the Panthers, the Florida Panther is a real animal. Kind of like why the Texas Rangers are not the Dallas or Arlington Rangers. I think most of you know this but in case you didn't, that's why.

They originally were going to call themselves this, but it was simply easier to say Carolina so thats what they went with. I like it, it gives a nod to our friends in the Palmetto state even though very few of them are participants in the team, or the sport of Hockey.

What bothers me, idiots still think the Hurricanes play in Charlotte. I still to this day meet people who see me with Hurricanes gear on and question why Charlotte has two Hockey teams and why they go to Uptown Charlotte to see a Hurricanes game but can't find out when and where they are playing

I don't like it if there is another NHL franchise in the same state/province. Like Florida, the Islanders. I think it works well with Arizona, Carolina, Minnesota, and New Jersey. It helps get more people interested in the team who live outside the cities.

agree. it's not that big a deal if it's a team like Colorado. there's no other team there. but it's stupid when you have a situation where Tampa is playing Florida. Tampa IS Florida, so it's basically playing itself. NHL should've never allowed that.

I bet what's really weird is the fact they have never played in Charlotte and actually started in Greensboro no?

When you think hockey when someone mentions Florida, your first thought is Tampa Bay Lightning and not Florida Panthers?

Did you have trouble with association games as a child?
