No. Overpaying is worse than not paying IMO.
Doug Armstrong has never bought out a player. He'll trade a bad contract elsewhere and try to get a better player in return, even if he's got to throw in future assets for it. Worked out great for 2019, needed a huge stroke of luck, but the prospect pool is pretty f***ing bare right now and we'll pay for that for a while as a result.Who cares if Pietrangelo can’t be bought out easily 4-5 years later? The team would be rebuilding/retooling anyway.
Agreed! The Jordan Binnington contract was a huge mistake.
These are totally original ideas and fully explain what's going on with the Blues this season and explain why Pietrangelo didn't come back.I felt that contract to Binnington was wrong in every aspect.
Krug, I'd give you. Hoffman is on a 1-year, $4M contract that got signed on the eve of training camp. It's not like that deal hindered our ability to go out and get other guys. Our roster was set and we were waiting on the ability to use LTIR to sign him.The krug and Hoffman signings are not good.
Might I direct you to one of 27 threads in the Blues forum where we've discussed this ad nauseum. Not to mention, painting this as a decision to "turn down 40+M dollars for a job" grossly distorts the entire situation.I wish Blues fans would stop acting like Army either "didn't want Petro to come back" or "didnt care" or "waited until the last minute" or "let him walk away." All of those statements represent a fundamental misunderstanding of contract negotiations in the sense that TWO parties are always involved. I understand that athletes have every right to ask for their worth, but if you turn down 40+M dollars for a job, you either dont like the city, want more money, or let your ego in the way because lack of financial security is never a plausible reason.

Why the hell would teams sign this contract?
Rear loaded contracts are toxic.
He'll be 38 at the end of this contract.
The dude does a pretty good job of staying healthy and he's consistently productive, but he's on the wrong side of 30 and this contract looks totally dumb from a sane GM's perspective.
they're just in a powerhouse division. Can't fault them

Yeah I wasn’t being serious. If the blues were any good this year it’s be a pretty good division.Average division. Maybe 3rd best.
I went to STL a couple months before covid happened for a Leafs/Blues game. It was honestly a pretty fun time. It's nowhere near the grim place some people make it out to be - just like any other city, have your head on a swivel and know where you're staying and going and you'll be just fine. I learned that lesson the hard way when I was in the bay area for a Leafs/Sharks game in Nov. 2018 and stayed up in SF - it's not the city's fault that I didn't do enough research and realize I was just a couple blocks away from the f***ing tenderloin - that's 100% on me lol. Can’t blame him at all. Ever been to St Louis?
Yes and no. Pietrangelo's current contract is a mistake, so blues made the right call on that. If they could have signed a shorter deal (i.e. 5 years) then it would have made sense, but Pietrangelo wasnt settling for that.
They avoided one mistake but made several more with Krug, Faulk, Binnington's contracts
Can people not count? Pietrangelo will be 37 at the end of his current contract. He just turned 31 at the start of this shortened season.
Imagine thinking having a top 10 right handed dman under 9m is a mistake.
imagine thinking signing a 31 year old for 7 years isnt a mistake
Winning a cup is one of the most detrimental actions towards future success.Did the Blues make a mistake not re-signing Pietrangelo?
Every game is looking worse and worse. Lost to the Avs tonight. And if they make the playoffs they'll get steamrolled by the Avs and Vegas.
Curious what others think.
Imagine thinking that signing Faulk for 7 years at 6.5M isn't a mistake, especially when you already have two RHD talents like Parayko and Pietrangelo.imagine thinking signing a 31 year old for 7 years isnt a mistake
Don't you know? Once a player hits age 30, they're rubbish. Garbage. Shit. They're doing good to tie their own skates. Hell, they're doing not to need a walker to get to/from the locker room. Even 28 is pushing it. You only ever want a team of guys age 18-27. Period. Everything else is a waste of money.Oh no not a chance to win for 5-6 years, anything but that. Give me cap space...cap space that could be used on a Pietrangelo.

I guess if you enjoy living in hell. Summers with 90+ Degree/humidity days are for the birds.Even as a Chicagoan, this is BS. STL is a great sports town and many players stay after retirement. I lived there for three years during grad school and there are many great spots to live west of the city.
I find it funny how San Francisco’s reputation has only gotten bad over the past couple of years when there have been bad neighborhoods forever. Once you leave the piers and head up hill it’s a different world in the city. People bad mouth Oakland but I’ve never had any bad experiences anywhere there, especially compared to SF.I went to STL a couple months before covid happened for a Leafs/Blues game.
