Yeah but you run the risk of drafting duds which later in the first is more likely then not. Don’t worry about refilling the cupboard worry about winning a cup

That’s what having a scouting staff is for.

The good news is that you don’t need to choose one of these paths or the other. You can still look to pick your spots and trade picks for NHL level talent without sacrificing your entire lot of them. Both can be done.

You can throw picks around when you’re in a position like Tampa was in the last few years. We aren’t there. Keep building the right way, move a 1st only for the right player (like Meier). Though even Meier might not be the right guy if he wants every dollar he can get.

If a guy is signed for 2-3 years and can be Jack's winger in that time spans then that's perfectly fine to spend a first rounder on. Reinhart + Buchnevich are prime examples of that.

I'm not moving a 1st in this draft for Reinhart. Maybe Buch.

Do they have a true core in place? They have two centers and a defender signed long term. I’d like two wings and one more defender. I’m confident one or both of Luke and Nemec become the defender we hope but I’m not sure Bratt extends with NJ and who is even remotely close to his ability at wing? The team is getting by with a bunch of complementary players this season. It’s not hopeless but I think they still have some roster work to do.
Well they aren’t going to find those pieces in this time table drafting 20ish in the first round. When you have jack and Nico on team friendly deals like it or not they have to add talent to it.

Ah yes because scouting is always perfect.

Lol yeah I’ll take another chase stillman over someone that can help this team in the playoffs.

I’m not against trading firsts and prospects not named Hughes or Nemec to add a core piece. It’s just that paying a first Yegor and Casey for a rental similar to Haorvat seems like an overpay at this point.

Who said scouting was perfect?

I don’t get it. You don’t want to ever use a draft pick because we missed on a guy once? You can’t think of any late 1st round Devils picks that were really important players? I can.

Fitz has “added talent”, will continue to do so, and won’t mortgage the future unnecessarily doing it.

No one is saying to trade that for a rental. Also Hovart isn’t a rental.

Missed on one? i didn’t know bringing in nhl talent to help the future is mortgaging the future. Weird

Bringing in “NHL talent” can mortgage the future, yes. I’m only trading a 1st for a player that will be helping us 2,3,4 years from now. I’m not operating under the assumption that we’re going to pick a Chase Stillman every year, that is weird.

wtf is this schedule in the middle of March?

646071

6 games in 9 days....what the f***.
I think the one that sticks out the most for me is the "Montreal followed by Carolina" games...BACK TO BACK.

I mean....Holy Jet-Lag, Batman!! :amazed:

Flying to Canada, then having to fly back home immediately after the game FOR a game the following night against the Top team in the Division? BRUH.

There could be some dead-tired legs from Devils players that 2nd night and against the Canes, that's not going to be an easy game to come out with at least a point....

And of course then we have some kind of mini-playoff with Tampa for some reason....sandwiched around a game against Florida where I hope we bring up Geersten to kick Matt Tkachuk's ass.

Sorry to re-hash the whole Brunette/Golf Cart saga but someone here stated that him refusing to take the Breathalyzer test was a wise move as a failed test would result in an automatic 1-year suspension of his license.

But I looked it up and it said that a REFUSAL to take one results in an automatic 1-year suspension of his license.

A failed test, depending on how badly he failed, would result in probably a 6-month suspension.

Either way, he's F'ed and can't drive a car for awhile.

(and what a dumb way to get your license suspended : a f**king Golf Cart. :shakehead )

Wonder if it could be dropped or plead to a lesser charge. I'm wondering what Fitz and Co decide to do.

More than likely will prob plead down to a lesser charger

Probably some form of reckless driving

Horvat was traded as a rental. NYI signed him afterwards. No guarantee that happens at the time of the trade.
Only if you believe Lou didn’t find out if horvat would re-sign before he pulled the trigger. Some speculation out there suggesting tampering, but we’ll probably never know.

Why wouldn’t Vancouver allow negotiations? Can’t see how that helps them get a better return?

Yeah. Dude has money so he can bring in a good lawyer, so as long as the judge isn't in a bad mood.

I'm not sure the team really needs to do anything here, but if they feel impelled, fine him and have him go to some meetings and call it a day.

They don’t understand how asset management works and never will, it’s a brick wall that says the same thing over and over. (Also mostly debates with a simplistic straw-men they make up and project as “the board’s take”.)

It’s all magical imaginary “win now” trades that always bring all those wins in vs no trades ever/ no draft success ever.

And we all remember how all those moves “to stay competitive” worked like a charm with late stage Lou. And how Shero never doing a rebuild and spending assets really got the team competitive under him too.

You know who has less trade value than Chase Stillman? Nikita Gusev.

We got 82 games out of him and he was long gone from our team by the time Detroit drafted Shai Buium with our 2021 2nd (#36).

Buium was #74 on Elite Prospects top 100 prospects.

Brock Faber was #73 on the same list. You know, the defensive prospect LA used to trade for Fiala.

You know who has more trade value than PK Subban?

#91 on that list, Marat Khusnutdinov, who was drafted with our 2020 2nd (#37). And #89 on that list, Bobby Brink, who was drafted with our 2019 2nd (#34).

But we got all that winning by trading useless picks for NHL talent then, so it was so worth it.
