I think it's very possible we finish top 3 in goals against this year. It all depends on the defense not dropping off a whole lot (I don't it will) and how the backup goalie performs.

I think with Cory playing 65 games, we have a good shot at it.

its official, Schneider has been given the keys to the castle. Like any signing, there's a risk involved - but given what NJD gave up to acquire this guy it was the right move to get him locked up long term and I think Lou did it at a decent price. 6 million is a little expensive, but compared to what some other goalies are making around the league, it should be fine. Now its up to Cory to perform up to expectations and really get his career started. He'll get his 65 games for years to come

The Schneider contract is great from the devils perspective. He's solid but far from a savior, given the organizational holes. I'm just questioning why he would blindly sign on for 7 years when there isn't any cavalry coming over the hill to help him. At minimum, you need 3 to 4 high level players in their prime and under 30 to bring home the cup in this league (see hawks and kings most notably). The devils haven't even drafted such type of impact players yet unless Larsson pulls a 180. Then you have Lou who still manages the team like it's 1992.

I gotta say this is the perfect deal for both sides both in terms and dollars. Sure Cory could have gotten more in FA but I would think at this stage in his career, stability is more important than money. We've got a defense that is built for the length of his contract (longer IMO) so he knows what he's got in front of him. Lou has done well to address the scoring issues while not going salary crazy (I'm particularly fond of the Havlat signing and think it will be one of the best steals of this FA) and has stated he plans on making more moves. It's hard not to feel optimistic about the direction this team is moving in given Lou's aggressive moves this offseason. This offseason definitely gets an A from this Devils fan.

For the last 10+ years our defense has relied far more on the forwards helping than the actual ability of our defense. Cory and the defense aren't nearly as important as much as everyone playing their role properly.

I just don't see any reason to believe he is going to just forget how to stop pucks with an extra 15 games. Everything you want to see out of a top goaltender is there. He passes the eye test and his stats are phenomenal. Definitely worth this deal.

Not here, but I did read it when you posted it on the mainboard.

Obviously Cory doesn't have much playoff experience yet, but again there is no reason to believe his skills will suddenly vanish in a playoff series. The guy is talented as hell.

And I agree the full workload, and also the peace of mind of not having to wonder if one bad game will see him on the bench for a week could allow him to become even better.

I don't think it seems silly at all. Cory has not shown any ability to get better as the season has progressed. Let's be honest, he hardly separated himself from a broken down Brodeur...

All that being said, NJ has never been about a goaltender standing on his own. The forwards supporting the defense and the defense supporting the goaltender and the whole team limiting opportunities is what NJ has always been about.

And I'm sure that is exactly why the name "Cory Schneider" is on a contract with the Devils today.

We have a young, slightly raw defense that'll see some growing pains and a makeshift, square peg/round hole collection of forwards. There's no telling how the pieces will all come together - especially having to start off on a road heavy schedule.

We're going to need pretty great goaltending to help us get on a roll this season, and Schneider has proven over his career that he can provide great goaltending.

I don't doubt his ability to take on a large workload because he played extremely well when he was handed over starts in bulk throughout the season. I don't question him under pressure because this is probably the least pressure he's ever felt in his career. He's not playing with the fear of losing his job anymore.

We're in good hands.
