The Lazar Bazaar is in full force. That guy is such an easy player to root for. Works his ass off each game.
He really is someone you can root for.

I didn't think much of him when he was acquired.

Just viewed him as an afterthought and a warm body.

But he's been morphing into quite the useful player for us.

Plus, it helps that he's also got a wonderful personality and a solid sense of humor both in the locker-room and on the ice.

Lazar endeared himself to me in the playoffs. Really love his work ethic.

I think that sort of thing has an infectious effect. It's hard to be flat when one guy is bust his ass doing everything he possibly can.

The Mikey McLeod arc has been something. You guys catch that Hughes move last night where he keeps the puck in the retreating defenders skates so they can’t track him and cut off the angle? Sure he lost the puck eventually, but he still got it over to Haula for a good shot. Guy is really stepping up, even if he’ll never be a scorer.

A Luke-Miller 3rd pair could be something special. Miller played a lot with Heiskanen last year and they did very well together and that's as the top pair.
I know the team should shelter him somewhat, but he's been too good to play as a third pair guy. Right now you'd say Bahl should play on the third pair.

Yeah I saw that about making him a healthy scratch and I agree that’s not gonna help, but that’s not the same as wanting him off the team completely.

Player decline can happen quite suddenly. It’s a fine line between being a valuable player and a liability, when you already have some very apparent deficiencies. If Dougie loses even just half a step on his already below par skating speed, that could be lights out right there on its own. It happens to guys in his age range all the time.

The Dougie contract could get ugly at the end. It’s not exactly a bargain right now.

But if you liked winning last year then you had to like his 22 goals and 74 points. Nemec could be a strong PP performer in NHL, but he won’t score like Dougie.

Some posters act like it’s a problem right now and it’s not. He’ll have four years left after this season.

He’s not going anywhere next season with his full no trade clause. If he stays productive he probably could moved, likely with some salary retained. The projected big bump in the salary cap would help make his salary more palatable.

Older defensemen get some term.
Ekholm got 4 year/6.25m in Oct 2021, at 31 years 4 months.
Petry got 4 year/ 6.125m in Sep 2020, at 32 years 9 months.
Letang got 6 year/6.1m in July 2022, at 35 years 2 months.

Brent Burns
Term left at trade: 3 years
Age at trade: 37 years 4 months
Salary Cap in 22/23: 82.5m

Erik Karlsson

Salary Cap in 23/24: 83.5m

is my ideal current alignment, in theory. I would like to get more data on the Luke-Marino pairing, though. And it doesn't have enough PK minutes to be ideal. Dress Smith and only play him on the PK.

There might be a rational for giving Dougie the night off, but it aint happening.

Luke needs to blast Butcher off our record books. Thats a little embarrassing.

After the trade, I went over to the Canucks boards and asked about him. They loved his energy, blocked shots, hits, speed, and face-off wins. Add-in a little snarl. Didn't think a 4th round draft pick was enough for him. He was pretty much a salary dump. We're seeing now how this was a smart pickup by Fitz.

I always love when a high-ish draft pick finds a niche as a gritty pain in the ass to play against.

All I looked for was Smith wasn't included in your pairings. That's a thumbs up for me!

Lazar is so good, he deserves praise TWICE in one post. ;)

Great game by the guys. Nice to see Miller back too, hopefully he's the missing piece we needed back there to calm the guys down on defense.
