Fair point, but Daws only started playing well in the last couple of weeks. He only started 3 games before about a month ago? And two of them were all the way back in October.

He was injured for a while there and we had Schmid (who didn't have a single quality start) backing up. And he might have gotten more games if he was able to outplay Gillies, but he really wasn't, and I'm not saying I blame him for it either.
He was injured for a while.

Daws plays one game in the AHL (10/17)

[10/19 Blackwood on IR]

Daws Emergency Loan to NJ (10/21)

Daws plays in 2 NHL games (10/23 & 10/26)

Daws Sent to the minors (10/28)

[11/2 Blackwood activated, 1st game is 11/5]

[11/4 Wedgewood claimed off waivers]

Daws plays in 8 AHL games, injured on 12/8 (back-up in 6 AHL games) (10/29 - 12/8)

[12/10 Bernier on IR, last played on 12/3]

[12/10 Schmid Emergency Loan to NJ, plays in NHL on 12/11 & 12/14]

[12/10 - 1/14 ECHL goalie Mareks Mitens has to start 8 AHL games in a row with random hobos as back-ups because we have no other healthy goalies. Goes 4-3-1.]

[12/15 Schmid placed on roster from Emergency Loan, plays in NHL on 12/18]

[12/15 Trade for Gillies, 1st game 12/19]

[12/25 Gillis to non-Roster for COVID]

[12/31 Gillis activated, next game is 1/13, has played in a total of 16 NHL games for us (yep).]

[1/13 Schmid to non-roster, activated & sent to minors the next day]

Daws returns, plays in 5 AHL games (back-up in 2 AHL games) (1/15 - 2/2)

[1/25 Blackwood on IR, last played 1/19]

[1/25 Schmid Emergency loan, plays in 3 NHL games]

[2/4 Schmid sent back to minors, since then he’s played 14 AHL games (with 3 sets of b2b games where Schmid played both games), while Mitens has played 2 & Daws dropped by for 1.]

Daws Emergency Loan to NJ (2/4)

Daws plays in 2 NHL games (2/7 & 2/15)

Daws to minors (2/17)

[2/17 Schmid Emergency Loan to NJ, sent back down on 2/19]

Daws plays 1 AHL game (2/18)

Daws Emergency Loan to NJ (2/19)

Daws plays in 10 NHL games (2/24 - 3/16)

We waived wedgewood over Geert over btw lol
Carrying three goalies never works for long.

We could of maybe waited on waiving him, maybe until Arizona picked up someone else or waited to see how our goalies did healthwise or etc.

Not sure that would have worked though, other teams have tried to keep to 3 goalies, but injuries make it very difficult to do. (Toronto wanted to do that with Dell last season and that plan lasted for less than a week due to injuries).

Starting the season with an injured starting goalie who came off the IR on Nov 2nd is why we lost Wedge. Sometimes shit just happens.

Fitz probably could have done more to beef up the goalie depth in the minors in the pre-season and/or right after he lost Wedge (and before the uptick in COVID cases briefly brought back taxi squads and made goalies scarcer). I don’t know what was available but even just another body would have been nice at times. Wedge was always at risk, I thought Buffalo or Arizona might grab him.

I’m almost at the point where I would say F it and offer our 1st for Spencer Knight . Almost being the key word.
please remember how volatile goaltender performance can be.

i remember just two and three drafts ago, that most of the fans here voted against draft a goalie in the first round or in the second or even in the third round because blackwood. and today blackwood is burned on the devils fans stake.

no single goaltender guarantees success. if you don't have an goalie with good health at hand, you are better of with two solid starting calibre goalies in the nhl and pool of close to nhl goaltenders in the ahl. to build such a pool it can't be a taboo to draft goalies in the first two rounds and commit to their development.

blackwood was a second round pick in 2015. he got 4 years of development, but once in the nhl he was playing back to backs, injured, you name it and no he seems to be injurie prone at the age of 25.
daws was a third round pick in 2020 (ok he was an overager) and he already is asked to carry a huge load. he might get destroyed before he is even an established nhl goaltender.

without investments and patience the goaltender position will remain a revolving door for the foreseeable future.

You can't trade the first right now for a goalie. We would get demolished value wise.

You maybe trade it at the draft once you know where it lands and get a feel for the draft board and more teams are open to trading players, but not at the deadline with where we are at.
I'm sure the goalie they would trade for wouldn't be as bad as a top 8 pick that they would took based on history.

They got outplayed 5 on 5 pretty easily. They neutralized our breakouts/rushes and pummeled us in our own zone. The goalies needed to be better, but weren't and oh the power play was a big fat zero.

Calgary is legit, I could see them winning the cup.
If they do, then Pickles is one hell of a lucky player.

I missed this one. Honestly, to get 3 goals past Markstrom I consider a small victory this year. Guy has been unbelievable.

Calgary is a very good team. I honestly wouldn't have gone back to Daws right away but I understand why the staff has no reliance in Gillies against a team as good as Calgary is. If it were me, I probably would have just given Gillies the Canucks game the night before.

How did some of the individual players look? I saw Nico got 2 assists and apples for Jack and Bratt too, so that's always nice.

Hughes and Bratt weren’t that noticeable, which is fine. They can’t carry the team EVERY damn night.

I'll repeat what I poster earlier. Playing for a dinosaur like Sutter must really suck. I mean, who has fun winning? :sarcasm:

I thought we played well overall against Vancouver but lost, but against Calgary we were horrible.

I'm rooting for him. Not gonna lie.

How about you, man? :)
I love what Calgary has done in the past couple of years.

They straight up stole Markstrom from the Oilers when he tested the market, they brought in Tanev who was a rock alongside Hughes in Vancouver, Zadorov and Gudbransson for cheap, Toffoli was a solid pickup to bolster their depth and Coleman is a prototypical Sutter type of player. Coleman's contract, to me, doesn't scare me one bit if I'm the Flames if it makes the team super competitive for the window they seem to have.

If you're going for it, you can't half ass it... you have to go kinda "all-in" and that's what they're doing.

Daws should not be playing every frigging night. Give the kid a break.
So far I’ve supported the decision, at least up to last night. I’m not sure he should have started last game after being pulled over halfway into regulation the night before.

I’ll be pretty angry if Ruff plays him on Saturday. I’m the last person that has interest in seeing Gillies play, but like everyone has said to me when I start ranting on Gillies and want him waived, we kind of have to play Gillies. And they’re right. I can’t deny that.

Doesn’t mean I’m not gonna bitch about him if he stinks up the joint.
